This book is a history of the Scottish staple at Veere, a trading relationship between Scotland and the Netherlands that lasted from the 14th to the 18th century. The book explores the economic and political factors that led to the establishment and decline of the staple, as well as its impact on Scottish and European history. A fascinating look at a lesser-known aspect of Scottish history. Excerpt from The Scottish Staple at Veere: A Study in the Economic History of Scotland David I. (1124 we are informed, established towns and invited foreign traders to settle in them. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the Flemish settlements, re inforced in this way, acquired considerable importance. They were not confined to any one part of Scotland, though naturally it was chiefly on the East coast that the Flemings found a resting-place. Berwick they contributed to make one of the greatest commercial towns of the age. They were found thickly settled in Fife and Forfarshire, and Aberdeenshire was particularly distinguished for its colonies of Flemings, and even as far north as Inverness their industry left its mark on Scottish history. The late seventeenth century Netherlands have traditionally been viewed as the intellectual entrepot of Europe in general, and for Scotland in particular. Scottish students flocked in large numbers to the Dutch universities, bringing back ideas and books which influenced Scottish learning well into the eighteenth century. This book is the first full-length study of Scots in the United Provinces between 1650 and 1750. It analyses their numbers at the Dutch universities, the education they received and the impact this had on Scottish learning, on the eve of the Enlightenment, showing that the Scottish-Dutch relationship provided the infrastructure, which allowed Scotland to take part in a wider Republic of Letters and that its culture was increasingly characterised by it.

Reconstructs the life of Peter Goldman and presents a full edition and translation of his surviving poems and letters. The Dundonian physician Peter Goldman, one of an immigrant family of merchants, was the first Scot to take a medical degree from Leiden; he then undertook research in Oxford, London, and Paris, before resettling in Dundee. An important figure in contemporary Scottish literary culture, he maintained a wide correspondence with significant intellectual figures and influenced two landmark Scottish publishing projects: the Delitiae poetarum Scotorum (1637) and the Blaeu Atlas of Scotland (1654). However, his major literary achievement was his Latin poetry, which establishes him as a unique voice of his time. His longest and most prominent work is an elegy on the deaths of four of his brothers, strikingly narrated in the voice of their lamenting mother. This book reconstructs and provides a study of Goldman's life, career and writing. It also offers a full edition and translation of his surviving poems and letters, with accompanying commentary. Appendices provide an edited list of his remarkable library and a transcript of his testament.
