In China, in the first centuries of the Common Era, prognostication was a widely used tool of political decision making, of cultural and ideological expression and, increasingly, also of popular resistance. The Scripture on Great Peace originated in this environment. It contains warnings of a universal cataclysm and suggests a radical social and religious reorientation as means of salvation. Thereby, it connects insights and ideas of the empire's academic establishment to experiences and concerns of the population at large. It belongs to the earliest textual sources for Daoism, that is, for China's indigenous religion that took shape when the imperial government and with it the empire fell apart in the second century CE. The present volume documents the Scripture's doctrinal and stylistic diversity. The selected materials stem from different parts of the long text. Some focus on eschatological scenarios, others, in contrast, on utopian hopes for the reform of humankind and its future under the auspices of "Great Peace". Still others design schemes for personal immortality. In this study, these materials are translated into a Western language for the first time. The translations are accompanied by extensive explanatory annotations.

This first Western-language translation of one of the great books of the Daoist religious tradition, the Taiping jing, or "Scripture on Great Peace," documents early Chinese medieval thought and lays the groundwork for a more complete understanding of Daoism’s origins. Barbara Hendrischke, a leading expert on the Taiping jing in the West, has spent twenty-five years on this magisterial translation, which includes notes that contextualize the scripture’s political and religious significance. Virtually unknown to scholars until the 1970s, the Taiping jing raises the hope for salvation in a practical manner by instructing men and women how to appease heaven and satisfy earth and thereby reverse the fate that thousands of years of human wrongdoing has brought about. The scripture stems from the beginnings of the Daoist religious movement, when ideas contained in the ancient Laoziwere spread with missionary fervor among the population at large. Through an examination of the Great Peace (taiping), one of the first utopian visions in Chinese history, Zhao Lu describes the transformation of literati culture that occurred during the Han Dynasty. Driven by anxiety over losing the mandate of Heaven, the imperial court encouraged classicism in order to establish the Great Peace and follow Heaven’s will. But instead of treating the literati as puppets of competing and imagined lineages, Zhao uses sociological methods to reconstruct their daily lives and to show how they created their own thought by adopting, modifying, and opposing the work of their contemporaries and predecessors. The literati who served as bureaucrats in the first century BCE gradually became classicists who depended on social networking as they traveled to study the classics. By the second century CE, classicism had dissolved in this traveling culture and the literati began to expand the corpus of knowledge beyond the accepted canon. The first words that YAHUSHUA spoke after the resurrection according to John 20:19 were, Shalom or Peace be unto you. YAHUSHUA said, "...Shalom...." He was making a statement of fact, and the ambiance in the room changed. Why did YAHUSHUA choose these words to speak? The disciples were in fear of the religious leaders; however, once they saw Him, they knew the "peace," the "shalom" that he had just proclaimed was stronger than their fear. "Peace" must be essential because it was the first thing YAHUSHUA said after rising from the dead. Similarly, YAHUSHUA commanded "peace" to the storm on the Sea of Galilee, and it was peace He spoke to His disciples in that room. In Hebrew, the word " Peace" is "Shalom," an absence of chaos or war; it is completeness, tranquility. YAHUSHUA displayed the meaning of peace when he commanded the winds and the waves to obey Him. In Mark 4:39, it reads, " And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm." It is precisely what happened in the upper room when YAHUSHUA appeared amid his disciples. He told His disciples to be calm; stop all the fear and chaos. Be at peace. The word "Shalom" is used for "Peace" 209 times in the Scriptures, and when it is used, it is used in terms of removing fear. Paul understood "shalom," when he wrote to the temple in Rome. Romans 10:15 reads, "And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace....” In Matthew 5:9, YAHUSHUA says, "Blessed are the for they shall be called the children of ELOHIM." The "peace" that YAHUSHUA came to provide for us is not a "peace" that this world can have because the world is in darkness. YAHUSHUA said it like this, in John 16:33, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." YAHUSHUA is telling us that HaShatan will try to arouse us with the cares of this world, but do not let the fear that we will go through deter us. Zechariah, prophesied YAHUSHUA would bring light into darkness and provide a way to guide our feet into the way of peace. Look at how Paul describes it in Ephesians 6:15, here he is talking about the armor of ELOHIM; it reads, "And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace." To put it another way, walk in the way of peace. Walk in the peace of ELOHIM. Bring to mind John 14:27; it said, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." Also, in Matthew 10:13, it reads, "And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you." Isaiah 26:3 tells us, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee..." If our mind is stayed on ELOHIM because we trust in ELOHIM, the "peace" of ELOHIM is the "peace" that passes all understanding. As we gain knowledge and understanding of "peace," we will discover why YAHUSHUA said in Matthew 5:9, "Blessed are the for they shall be called the children of ELOHIM." Having "peace" in a world that is not His, walking in "shalom," and in the fruits of the Spirit, should be our ultimate goal. Throughout the Bible, we are encouraged to have "peace."
