Azenha do Mar is a fishing community on the southwest coast of Portugal. It came into existence around forty years ago, as an outcome of the abandonment of work in the fields and of propitious ecological conditions. This book looks at the migration processes since the founding of the community and how they relate to the social inequalities for property and labour which prevail today. The book also reflects upon the personal experience of the ethnographer in the field balancing the importance of methodology on the one hand and fieldwork as a research process on the other.

In this grand history of naval warfare, Palmer observes five centuries of dramatic encounters under sail and steam. From reliance on signal flags in the seventeenth century to satellite communications in the twenty-first, admirals looked to the next advance in technology as the one that would allow them to control their forces. But while abilities to communicate improved, Palmer shows how other technologies simultaneously shrank admirals' windows of decision. The result was simple, if not obvious: naval commanders have never had sufficient means or time to direct subordinates in battle.

The Command of the Ocean describes with unprecedented authority and scholarship the rise of Britain to naval greatness, and the central place of the Navy and naval activity in the life of the nation and government. It describes not just battles, voyages and cruises but how the Navy was manned, how it was supplied with timber, hemp and iron, how its men (and sometimes women) were fed, and above all how it was financed and directed. It was during the century and a half covered by this book that the successful organizing of these last three - victualling, money and management - took the Navy to the heart of the British state. It is the great achievement of the book to show how completely integrated and mutually dependent Britain and the Navy then became.

The Royal Canadian Navy crews that sailed the Atlantic during the early Cold War held a contemptuous view of their West Coast brethren, likening the Pacific fleet to a “yacht club” where sailors enjoyed a life of leisurely service on a tranquil sea. As Maritime Command Pacific demonstrates, nothing could be further from the truth. The first comprehensive history of the Pacific fleet from 1945 to 1965, it begins by exploring how Maritime Command Pacific (MARCAP) weathered postwar downsizing only to face rapid expansion in the wake of the Korean War. As Cold War tensions mounted, the fleet worked closely with the US Navy to defend the west coast of North America from potential threats. Over the course of this twenty-year period, MARCAP’s warships were just as active as their counterparts in the Atlantic; and their crews contended with drifting Japanese mines, joint US-Canadian training exercises, and the threat of Soviet submarines – all while patrolling a rugged coastline known, in part, as the “Graveyard of the Pacific.”

In "Some Principles of Maritime Strategy," Julian Stafford Corbett presents a foundational analysis of naval warfare that transcends the tactical to explore the broader strategic implications of maritime power. Written in the early 20th century, Corbett's work is distinguished by its scholarly rigor and a nuanced understanding of the interplay between sea and land power. He advocates for a maritime strategy that emphasizes the importance of sea control, logistics, and the psychological dimensions of naval engagement, positioning maritime strategy as an essential pillar of national policy in an imperial context. Julian Stafford Corbett (1854-1922) was a British naval historian and theorist whose deep-seated interest in maritime affairs stemmed from his maritime heritage and education. As a close observer of contemporary naval developments, particularly during the age of imperialism, Corbett sought to articulate a framework that transcended the prevailing doctrines of his time. His perspectives were shaped by the geopolitical realities of his era, which underscored the critical role of naval power in securing national interests and maintaining global influence. This seminal work is highly recommended for scholars, military professionals, and enthusiasts of maritime history alike. Corbett's insights remain particularly relevant in today's geopolitical landscape, where naval strategy continues to evolve in response to new threats. Readers will find in Corbett's text both a historical perspective and timeless principles that illuminate the art of maritime strategy.
