This book is about misguided development. It shows how a state-dedicated development strategy can destroy the productive capacities of people and their means of livelihood. It is a major new account of Ethiopia's contemporary socioeconomic and political history, and its future development problems and prospects. Ethiopia's most recent history has been marked by a fusion of famine, ecological disaster, and massive poverty. This despite the country's considerable resources: fertile land not yet under intensive cultivation, grazing land underused, and enormous water resources poorly exploited. Little research has been done to explain this incongruity. Girma Kebbede fills in this gap by providing a thorough examination of major socioeconomic and political factors that have kept the majority of the Ethiopian population poor and extremely vulnerable to adverse natural phenomena. The post-revolutionary political and socioeconomic transformation of Ethiopia resulted in the establishment of a highly authoritarian state controlled by a small bureaucratic elite that retained power through force and intimidation, and appropriated surplus by virtue of its control of state power and major sectors of the economy. The author argues that, as a result of the state's ill-conceived development strategies and priorities, and its intrusiveness into all aspects of social and economic life, the country was thrown into a perilous economic condition, with social dislocation and political instability. This book will be of interest to development policymakers, environmentalists, development aid donors, and non-governmental organizations involved in development activities in Africa, as well as to undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in economics, political science, geography, ecology, sociology, and demography.

Climate change, coupled with its multifaceted characteristics, has been affecting food security, and causing hunger and poverty in Ethiopia. Increasing temperature and rainfall variability have caused drought as the country's agriculture mainly depends on rainfall. It is the poor, the majority who relies on rain-fed agriculture, who shoulder the burden of climate change in the country. Though climate change affects both men and women, rural women are the ones who have been affected severely by climate variability as a result of their status in the social, economic, cultural, religious, political and ecological arenas. Rural women in Ethiopia highly depend on natural resources around them for daily survival. Thus, their reliance on a sector which is susceptible to be affected by climate change makes them more vulnerable to the impacts of climate variability. In addition, gender roles and relations affect their access to resources and decision making processes. Moreover, poverty and population growth have the potential to intensify the impacts of climate change and cause migration. Therefore, the study recommends gender mainstreaming into climate change and development policies.

ÿDecades of scientific research related to agriculture and natural resource management have brought limited benefits to smallholder farmers, including crop farmers, fishers, livestock keepers and other resource users. Therefore, donors, policymakers and civil society organizations (CSOs), such as farmer organizations and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), are urging the formal research sector to make its work more useful to smallholder farmers. Many institutions of agricultural research and development are now seeking ways to engage more closely with smallholders in order to conduct research that is more relevant for and accessible to them, and are seeking examples and good practices as sources of learning. Some examples of research that is focused on smallholders and in which the process is co-managed and driven by smallholders can be found in ?informal? research initiatives --specifically, those which are facilitated by CSOs. The purpose of this study was to identify such examples of informal agricultural research and development that could be documented and thus made accessible to formal researchers. This report also describes farmer-led research findings and their dissemination, and analyzes available evidence on the impact of farmer-led approaches to agricultural research and development on rural livelihoods, local capacity to innovate and adapt, and influence on governmental institutions of agricultural research and development.
