This is a history of the region now known as the United States of America, from earliest times to the American victory over the British and the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The book charts the arrival of the first Americans through Alaska, millennia before the coming of the Norsemen, or of Cabot, Columbus and Raleigh. It tells of the sixteenth century incursions by the Spanish, French and English, their interaction with the American Indians, and describes the early settlements, their culture, activities and trade. The author traces the rise to dominance of the British settlers, and the establishment of the whole of east America within the British Empire. The book closes with an account of the war with the British and of Washington's final triumph.

Liberalism was not only the first modern ideology, it was also the first secular movement to have an international presence. The scholarly articles in this collection, skillfully edited by Iván Zoltán Dénes, examine liberal ideas and movements from Scotland to the Ottoman Empire. The volume seeks to uncover and analyze various relationships between liberalisms and nationalisms, national identities and modernity concepts, nations and empires, nation-states and nationalities, traditions and modernities, images of the self and the others, modernization strategies and identity creations. This volume provides an important historical analysis that is essential toward understanding the questions and motivations of liberalism in the European Union today. This is, therefore, a timely contribution to both historiography and contemporary politics.

Liberty And Freedom written by David Hackett Fischer and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-11-15 with History categories.

Liberty and freedom: Americans agree that these values are fundamental to our nation, but what do they mean? How have their meanings changed through time? In this new volume of cultural history, David Hackett Fischer shows how these varying ideas form an intertwined strand that runs through the core of American life. Fischer examines liberty and freedom not as philosophical or political abstractions, but as folkways and popular beliefs deeply embedded in American culture. Tocqueville called them "habits of the heart." From the earliest colonies, Americans have shared ideals of liberty and freedom, but with very different meanings. Like DNA these ideas have transformed and recombined in each generation. The book arose from Fischer's discovery that the words themselves had differing origins: the Latinate "liberty" implied separation and independence. The root meaning of "freedom" (akin to "friend") connoted attachment: the rights of belonging in a community of freepeople. The tension between the two senses has been a source of conflict and creativity throughout American history. Liberty & Freedom studies the folk history of those ideas through more than 400 visions, images, and symbols. It begins with the American Revolution, and explores the meaning of New England's Liberty Tree, Pennsylvania's Liberty Bells, Carolina's Liberty Crescent, and "Don't Tread on Me" rattlesnakes. In the new republic, the search for a common American symbol gave new meaning to Yankee Doodle, Uncle Sam, Miss Liberty, and many other icons. In the Civil War, Americans divided over liberty and freedom. Afterward, new universal visions were invented by people who had formerly been excluded from a free society--African Americans, American Indians, and immigrants. The twentieth century saw liberty and freedom tested by enemies and contested at home, yet it brought the greatest outpouring of new visions, from Franklin Roosevelt's Four Freedoms to Martin Luther King's "dream" to Janis Joplin's "nothin' left to lose." Illustrated in full color with a rich variety of images, Liberty and Freedom is, literally, an eye-opening work of history--stimulating, large-spirited, and ultimately, inspiring.

For the student of history, the twentieth century will continue to create questions about political decisions that were imposed on the people in order to restore the equilibrium that had been upset by the two catastrophic world wars in Europe. During the century, several generations have felt the weight of these decisions with particular force. These generations have tried in every legitimate way to overturn those decisions in order to vindicate the dreams of the masses who were victims of the political plans of the powerful. We have crossed the threshold of the twenty-first century. The mayhem spread by social disturbances has begun to subside. The political and diplomatic expediences of the powerful have intensely affected developments in the Hellenic Lands. Although the leading characters of the 20th century belong to history, it is necessary to examine the events of that time so that subsequent generations of Hellenes, especially academicians, politicians, diplomats and all those distinguished by the love of history may learn the truth. From this perspective, the work of Dr. Photos constitutes a profound history of the political decisions of the leadership of Greece (political and religious) and of the large expatriate Greek communities of the New World (American and Australian). Their decisions have contributed to the crucifixion of Northern Epirus and Macedonia, as well as to the unending ordeal of Cyprus. This has resulted in denying the right of sovereignty to a people that is linguistically, nationally, and religiously Hellenic.
