The publication in 2009 of C. G. Jung's The Red Book: Liber Novus has initiated a broad reassessment of Jung’s place in cultural history. Among many revelations, the visionary events recorded in the Red Book reveal the foundation of Jung’s complex association with the Western tradition of Gnosis. In The Search for Roots, Alfred Ribi closely examines Jung’s life-long association with Gnostic tradition. Dr. Ribi knows C. G. Jung and his tradition from the ground up. He began his analytical training with Marie-Louise von Franz in 1963, and continued working closely with Dr. von Franz for the next 30 years. For over four decades he has been an analyst, lecturer and examiner of the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, where he also served as the Director of Studies. Love was the great mystery in C. G. Jung's life. His confrontation with love for a woman and a feminine soul animated the composition of Jung's great Red Book, the book he formally titled Liber Novus. C. G. This paper was originally presented in a Symposium: "Creative Minds in Dialogue - The Relationship between C. G. Jung and Erich Neumann." Symposium at Pacifica Graduate Institute, Santa Barbara, California, June 24–26, 2016. Erich Neumann (1905-1961) was indisputably one of C. G. Jung’s most brilliant and creative disciples. Publication in 2015 of the correspondence between Neumann and Jung—Analytical Psychology in Exile: The Correspondence of C. G. Jung and Erich Neumann—has opened new perspectives on the work of both men and stimulated a resurgent interest in Erich Neumann. Neumann’s encounter with Jung, begun in 1933 at age twenty-nine, was the transformative event in his life. But to a degree, the influence eventually went both ways; Neumann induced new perceptions in Jung. From the mid-1930s onward, interchanges with Neumann enhanced Jung’s understanding of the mystical depths of Jewish tradition, particularly of Kabbalah and early Hasidism. Neumann undoubtedly played a crucial role in Jung’s astonishing declaration—recorded in 1955, during an eightieth birthday interview—that “the Hasidic Rabbi Baer from Meseritz, whom they called the Great Maggid” was the person who “anticipated my entire psychol-ogy in the eighteenth century.”

Gnosticism was for C.G. jung the chief prefiguration of his analytical psychology. In this volume Robert Segal, an authority on theories of myth and Gnosticism, has searched the Jungian corpus for Jung's main discussions of this ancient form of spirituality. The progression in Gnosticism from sheer bodily existence to the release of the immaterial spark imprisoned in the body - and the reunion of that spark with the godhead - represents for Jung the psychological progression from ego consciousness to the ego's rediscovery of the unconscious, and the ego's integration with the unconscious to forge the self. The Red Book is C.G. Jung’s record of a period of deep penetration into his unconscious mind in a process that he called ‘active imagination’, undertaken during his mid-life period. Answer to Jung: Making Sense of ‘The Red Book’ provides a close reading of this magnificent yet perplexing text and its fascinating images, and demonstrates that the fantasies in The Red Book are not entirely original, but that their plots, characters and symbolism are remarkably similar to some of the higher degree rituals of Continental Freemasonry. It argues that the fantasies may be memories of a series of terrifying initiatory ordeals, possibly undergone in childhood, using altered or spurious versions of these Masonic rites. It then compares these initiatory scenarios with accounts of ritual trauma that have been reported since the 1980s. This is the first full-length study of The Red Book to focus on the fantasies themselves and provide such an external explanation for them. Sonu Shamdasani describes The Red Book as an incomplete task that Jung left to posterity as a ‘message in a bottle’ that would someday come ashore. This book examines the influence of Gnostic philosophy on Jungian psychology as indicated by Jung's essay, 'The Transcendent Function' (1916), and his Gnostic-inspired treatise, The Seven Sermons to the Dead (also written in 1916). Relevant and timely due to the relatively recent publication of Jung's The Red Book, the hypothesis of this work is that the Seven Sermons is the mythopoetic, metaphysical twin of 'The Transcendent Function' and that these texts can be considered as two sides of the same coin. The Seven Sermons formed a prelude to everything Jung was to communicate about the unconscious-in other words, an embryonic form of the principal tenets of analytical psychology can be found in a Gnostic-inspired text. As Gnostic philosophy was the inspiration for both texts, this book also highlights correspondences between both of Jung's works and the Gnostic texts of the Nag Hammadi Library, paying particular attention to the theme of the opposites-arguably the crucial theme at the very heart of Jung's psychology.
