What if everything you heard was wrong? There are countless theories and discussions about Jesus of Nazareth. Critics of Christianity usually discount the Gospel records and discount the claims of Jesus being the unique Son of God. They insist that Jesus was a failed revolutionary, a misguided carpenter, or a myth created by his followers. What if it was true? The Gospel record tells a radically different story. In it Jesus boldly proclaims himself to be deitythe Son of Godand announces that his life was not just for inspiration, but for a distinct purpose. Is it true? Find out for yourself in Dr. Jon Deweys new book, The Search for the Biblical Jesus. You never need doubt again.

This book is the result of the author's involvement with the Jesus Seminar. The premise is that the quest for the historical Jesus has always been closely related to the Christian search for God, and that this is both good and necessary, provided that one properly understands the relationship between history and theology and does not confuse the two.Patterson develops s theology that might properly be called a "Jesus Theology" and it is here that his contribution to the discussions of and about Jesus makes it a most distinctive contribution.

"For over a decade, the Jesus Seminar, a group of more than seventy-five internationally recognized biblical scholars - experts in such diverse fields as Greco-Roman history, archaeology, and linguistics - has met twice yearly to conduct a painstaking search for the authentic Jesus. Through rigorous research and debate, they have combed the gospels for evidence of the man behind the myths. The figure they have discovered is very different from the icon of traditional Christianity." "The Acts of Jesus presents and illuminates the historical and literary evidence that led to the Seminar's often controversial conclusions. It provides the reader with immediate access to the latest scholarship in historical Jesus research today."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This groundbreaking work, which established the reputation of Albert Schweitzer as a theologian, traces the search for the historical figure of Jesus (apart from the Christ of faith) and establishes the author's own views. While Schweitzer's own proposals no longer command endorsement, his lasting contribution-comprising the bulk of the book-is the critique of his predecessors. By examining the works of more than 50 eighteenth- and nineteenth-century authors and scholars, he endeavored to show the fanciful nature of their historical reconstructions of Jesus. Schweitzer's work has proved to be the touchstone for all subsequent quests for the "Jesus of history." It contributed to the remarkable resurgence in Jesus studies in the latter part of the twentieth century and culminated in the much publicized and highly controversial findings of the Jesus Seminar. An influential and detailed study by the 1953 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, The Quest of the Historical Jesus is essential reading for biblical scholars, theologians, pastors, and serious Christians. For more than a century, Bible scholars and university researchers have been systematically debunking what ordinary Christians believed about Jesus of Nazareth. But what if the most recent Biblical scholarship actually affirmed the New Testament? What if Jesus was not a Zealot revolutionary, or a Greek Cynic philosopher, or a proto-feminist Gnostic, but precisely what he claimed to be: the divine Son of Man prophesied in the Book of Daniel who gave his life as a ransom for many? What if everything the Gospels say about Jesus of Nazareth—his words, his deeds, his plans—turned out to be true? Searching for Jesus changes “what if?” to “what is,” debunking the debunkers and showing how the latest scholarship supports orthodox Christian belief.

Geza Vermes is the greatest living Jesus scholar. In "The Real Jesus", Vermes, best known for his work on the Dead Sea Scrolls, comments on a variety of contemporary religious themes such as "The Da Vinci Code", Mel Gibson's infamous film "The Passion of the Christ", Benedict XVI's book "Jesus of Nazareth" and the "Gospel of Judas". Informed by the work of a world-class scholar, the short articles in this book open to the general reader the findings of some of the major discoveries of the twentieth century such as the Dead Sea Scrolls. This collection of shorter popular pieces, many of which appeared in "The Times" and other newspapers, makes Vermes' research on Christian origins, the Dead Sea Scrolls and most importantly Jesus the Jew accessible to a wider readership.

***SEE BELOW FOR AN IMPORTANT UPDATE!!!*** While the dawn of the new millennium has brought an unprecedented interest to the field of New Testament studies and the search for the historical Jesus, a critical piece in early Christian development has been noticeably absent: Tertullus laid charges against Paul in the following address to the governor: "Your Excellencywe have found him to be a troublemakera ringleader of the sect known as the Nazarenes Paul said "I admit that I follow the Way, which they call a sect. I worship the God of our ancestors, and I firmly believe the Jewish law and everything written in the books of prophecy. I have hope in God, just as these men do, that he will raise both the righteous and the ungodly. Acts 24:2,5,11-15 (NLT) Put simply, the world has so embraced the story of how the apostle Paul took a small Jewish apocalyptic sect and transformed it into a global Gentile movement, that it has forgotten the very first followers of Jesus, otherwise known as Nazarenes. What were they like, and how did their beliefs differ from the Roman based model that sprang up later? Even from the Catholic fathers, we are given some tantalizing clues: But these sectariansdid not call themselves Christians, but Nazarenes, however they are simply complete Jews. They use not only the New Testament but the Old Testament as well, as the Jews doThey have no different ideas, but confess everything exactly as the Law proclaims it and in the Jewish fashion, except for their belief in the Messiah, if you please! For they acknowledge both the resurrection of the dead and the divine creation of all things, and declare that God is one, and that His Son is Yshua the Messiah. They are trained to a nicety in Hebrew. For among them the entire Law, Prophets and theWritingsare read in Hebrew, as they surely are by the Jews. They are different from the Jews, and different from Christians, only in the following. They disagree with the Jews for they have come to faith in Messiah; but since they are still fettered with the Lawcircumcision and the Sabbath, and the restthey are not in accord with ChristiansThey have the Good News according to Matthew in its entirety in Hebrew. For it is clear they still preserve this, in the Hebrew alphabet, as it was originally written. Epiphanus; Panarion 29 (fourth century) Are these Nazarenes actually the unknown continuation of the Apostle Pauls ministry? What about the Jerusalem Church mentioned so frequently by Paul and headed up by Peter and James the Just? Why is it only now that we can tell the story of Christendoms most influential group throughout its first fifty years andabove allwhat happened to them? Furthermore, even a casual glance at any New Testament will show the Gospel of Matthew given the honor of being the first book in the collection. Such an arrangement, directly derived from ancient belief of what was written when, is currently ignored because modern scholarship accords this honor to Mark. Similarly, while the scholarly world has all but forgotten the Nazarenes, they have proclaimed almost universally that the New Testament was originally written in Greek, despite strong early testimony and clear textual evidence to the contrary. However, since the fourth century, the Nazarenes at some time seem to have vanished off the face of the earth. As a result, their existence has now been rendered into little more than a footnote in history, and their connection to the original Christian movement and their Semitic scriptures, have been believed to be lost forever. That is, until now. Now, for the first time, a modern Nazarene breaks his silence and details the results of more than four years of research in his provocative new book Signs of the Cross. As a work destined to turn upside down the current Greek compositional model of the New Testament, Signs of the Cross breaks new grou
