Americans widely believe that the U.S. Constitution was almost wholly created when it was drafted in 1787 and ratified in 1788. Jonathan Gienapp recovers the unknown story of the Constitution’s second creation in the decade after its adoption—a story with explosive implications for current debates over constitutional originalism and interpretation.

Christ of the Creation Days by Greg Girard I have long been fascinated by the great types of Scripture: not clever connections invented by over ingenious preachers, but the patterns that underlie the way God repeatedly works both in the people and the events of the Bible. Some of them are quite explicit. Others you dont see till they are pointed out to you, and then you wonder how you could have missed them. The more we see one part of Scripture underlining another, in what I think of as the repeat of patterns, the greater its integrity is seen to be, and the clearer its message. Greg Girard opens our eyes to a set of correspondences that could not be more basic to the biblical revelation of God. Should it surprise us that the sequence of his creative action in the making of the world should be the same shape as the sequence of his redemptive action in revealing himself to his people? Yet I for one had never made the connection. The creation of light, the separation of land and sea, the stars of heaven, the man appointed to rule all that lives-of course these images reappear elsewhere; but had you noticed where, and at what crucial points in the Bible story? The author deserves our thanks for this illuminating and inspiring study. Being As Communion written by William A. Dembski and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Religion categories.

For a thing to be real, it must be able to communicate with other things. If this is so, then the problem of being receives a straightforward resolution: to be is to be in communion. So the fundamental science, indeed the science that needs to underwrite all other sciences, is a theory of communication. Within such a theory of communication the proper object of study becomes not isolated particles but the information that passes between entities. In Being as Communion philosopher and mathematician William Dembski provides a non-technical overview of his work on information. Dembski attempts to make good on the promise of John Wheeler, Paul Davies, and others that information is poised to replace matter as the primary stuff of reality. With profound implications for theology and metaphysics, Being as Communion develops a relational ontology that is at once congenial to science and open to teleology in nature. All those interested in the intersections of theology, philosophy and science should read this book.

What if everything in the Bible has a larger outer context than is usually accounted for? Missional and biblical theologies suggest that the Bible presents a grand story like a play with multiple acts. The acts typically include creation, fall, redemption, and finally restoration. But what if the whole story itself occurs in another larger setting, occurring within a mission running in the background throughout the whole Bible? How might this aid our research, reading, and application? And why is this being proposed now? This book explores these questions. The larger context is the production of the place of God—a home and homeland wherein God, with his people, dwell on earth. Since place is underdeveloped in biblical studies, the book presents a new method for interpreting place. Then the book lays out the case that a grand mission to produce the place of God becomes the outer context for the whole Bible. Finally, the book defends this proposal with an in-depth placial commentary of the bookends of the Bible, since these bookends provide keys to unlock this message, thereby inviting further study on the rest of the Bible and on the implications for this transformative perspective.

Charles H. Long’s groundbreaking works on Africana religious studies serve as the backdrop to With This Root about My Person. The volume features twenty-six essays by a diverse group of students and scholars of Long. Revitalizing an interpretive framework rooted in the Chicago tradition, the essays in this volume vigorously debate the nature of religions in the Americas. In doing so they wrestle with the foundations of the study of religion that emerged out of the European Enlightenment, they engage the discipline’s entrenchment in the conquest of the Americas, and they grapple with the field’s legacy of colonialism. The book demonstrates tremendous breadth and depth of scope in its skillful comparative work on colonialism, which links the religions of the Americas, Melanesia, and Africa. This seminal work is an important addition to the Religions of the Americas Series and a valuable contribution to the field to which Charles H. Long was for so long devoted.

The Rigveda is the oldest Sanskrit text, consisting of over one thousand hymns dedicated to various divinities of the Vedic tradition. Orally composed and orally transmitted for several millennia, the hymns display remarkable poetic complexity and religious sophistication. As the culmination of the long tradition of Indo-Iranian oral-formulaic praise poetry and the first monument of specifically Indian religiosity and literature, the Rigveda is crucial to the understanding both of Indo-European and Indo-Iranian cultural prehistory and of later Indian religious history and high literature. This new translation represents the first complete scholarly translation into English in over a century and utilizes the results of the intense research of the last century on the language and the ritual system of the text. The focus of this translation is on the poetic techniques and structures utilized by the bards and on the ways that the poetry intersects with and dynamically expresses the ritual underpinnings of the text.

The major monotheistic religions of the world--Judaism, Christianity and Islam--have certain elements in common, particularly in their scriptures concerning the beginnings of life and the early history of human beings. This shared beginning is compellingly worth further study. Common ground and common threads can only help a dialogue between people of different faiths. This reference work could be a tool toward greater understanding of other faiths and focuses on the story of the creation of the universe and of humans. Part One traces the development of the earth and its inhabitants from a scientific viewpoint so that the humanistic perspective may be contrasted with the scriptural accounts to follow. Part Two features an introduction to the Tanakh, information on the Torah, and what is known about its authors, and other influences on the Jewish religion, followed by actual scriptures from the Torah from the creation through the destruction of the Tower of Babel. Then a section each is devoted to an explanation of the Catholic, Protestant and Fundamentalist Christian interpretations of these stories, citing scripture as appropriate. Part Three affords a Muslim perspective with excerpts from the Sirah that refer to events and characters from the early chapters of Genesis. The appendices are rich--various chronologies of similar events based on the different scriptures, tables of contents for the various holy books, tables presenting summaries of a particular perspective on a subject or comparisons between two perspectives and much more.

"Having studied the tail end of the Bible for decades, Strickler now probes the front end to unearth a fresh contribution to a theology of God's covenantal relationship to all creation. Recognizing that the younger Yahwist tradition reflects nationalistic interests, the book revolves around the paradigmatic influence of the elder Elohim tradition, which aligns better with the New Testament fulfillment of God's creative-redemptive purposes first mapped out in the early Genesis narratives."--Ted Lewis, executive director, The International Jacques Ellul Society"The aspiration to read the Bible beyond the confines of Christendom's categories has been shared by many, rarely practiced consistently, and often resulted in grievous disappointment. . . . Readers will be encouraged by Strickler's persistent effort to follow the story of Elohim from the first things of the Torah onward, reminding us that the elusive figure who covenanted with Noah is also the one who covenanted anew with the followers of Jesus and promises to send renewing waters flowing--at the end--through the new Jerusalem."--Michael Cartwright, University of Indianapolis"In looking at what might be the bookends of the Christian Scriptures, Strickler follows an Anabaptist ethos of trying to wrest the Scriptures from the holds of Christendom, with its priorities on power and self-protection. By contrast, Elohim is a God who creates, recreates, cocreates, and partners. . . . How the opening chapter of a story is understood determines how the rest of the story is read, and for those who claim the name 'Christian,' how the story of the Bible is understood determines how life is lived."--Tato Sumantri, digital content administration, Wipf and Stock Publishers
