Wesleyan churches, Pentecostal churches, and the modern charismatic movement trace their theological roots to John Wesley. Yet these groups have gone separate ways in interpreting the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church, often regarding one another with suspicion or distrust. In The Divided Flame, Dr. Howard Snyder, a Wesleyan minister, calls Wesleyans and charismatics to reexamine how they parted ways. He finds that they still have a great deal in common theologically, and he proposes that this common ground should serve as a basis for dialogue. "How does a Wesleyan dialogue with charismatic Christianity?" asks Snyder. "Rather than comparing our theology or practice point by point, we have chosen to address the central question that charismatic Christianity raises for us: In what sense is Christian experience, the church, charismatic? If the charismatic movement raises valid biblical questions for us--and it does--then it is more important to deal with those questions than merely to catalog the pluses and minuses of the movement." This book reviews the history of Wesleyan and charismatic thought, evaluating them in light of Scripture's norms for church life. A provocative study, The Divided Flame should bring fresh perspective to the controversy surrounding modern charismatic theology.

In "The Church in Crisis" the author draws on his more than thirty years of experience as a Christian to address just three of the issues that are shaping - and in some cases misshaping - the church as it approaches the end of its second millennium of existence. In the first short essay,"The New Gnosis: The Gospel Under Fire In the 21st Century," the author examines the influence of neo-gnostic ideas on the way Christians understand the Word of God. He encourages believers to stand fast upon the eternal revealed word and not to bend to the fashionable modern critics of the Bible. In the second short essay, "Christians at the Postmodern Well: Communicating Christ in the Postmodern World," the author examines the effects of postmodern philosophy upon the minds of this generation of young people. He shares some thoughts on how to address those who are under the spell of postmodernism. In the next essay the author revisits David Wilkerson's alarming prophetic vision for America's future in Set the Trumpet to Thy Mouth: Hosea 8:1. In the final and longest essay, "The Church vs. Homosexuals: A Christian Response to the Contemporary Conflict," the author draws upon his personal experiences and his faith to address this fiery topic that is dominating the news media and fundamentally transforming Christian America at the dawn of this century. The author believes that if the church in America is going to survive spiritually until the Lord's return, Christians need to have at least a basic understanding of these issues and why it is important for the church to continue to stand fast upon its principles - rooted and grounded in Christ.

This integral study is a multifaceted look at the experience of spiritual crisis or emergency for some Christian women involved in personal growth processes. It also looks at the women's integration of this experience into their lives. Theories regarding altered states of consciousness, mysticism, the relationship between mental illness and mysticism, the connection of abuse to spiritual development, spiritual crisis or emergency, and transpersonal developmental stages were reviewed. In addition the counseling needs of individuals experiencing a spiritual emergency were examined. In the first part of the study, thirty-three women, ranging from ages thirty-three to sixty-nine, responded to a questionnaire containing questions about core spiritual or mystical experiences, and questions related to mental illness. Nine of these women, ranging from ages thirty-eight to sixty-three were interviewed about their experience of spiritual crisis. the interviews were subjected to a phenomenological analysis that revealed textural core themes and structural core themes of spiritual emergency as lived experience for this group of women. There were two textural core themes. the first one was that the spiritual crisis was "a process directed by God or that God was part of it". the qualities and characteristics attached to this experience of spiritual crisis or emergency includes triggers; experiences that are difficult to explain; support; and beliefs. the second textural core theme was that the experience was "transformative or life-changing". the four structural core themes are causality--need for growth; time--length of time and distortion of time; relationship to others and relationship to self. One month following the interview the women were given an essay question that asked how the interview itself had affected them and demonstrated how the interview had helped in the integration process. For this group of women, the experience of spiritual crisis or emergency, although often difficult, painful, sometimes frightening, and which contained some pathological elements for some of the women, was a transformative experience. This experience continues to inform their lives and has led to an improved relationship with self, a changed relationship with God, and a greater ability for ministry to others.
