Excerpt from The Second Crisis in Christian Experience Brother Ruth is so scriptural and clear in his teachings and so cogent in his logic that it would be impossible for any candid man to affirm that he has not proved the doctrine. Excerpt from Christianity and the War We give our own experience on the subject under consideration in the belief that it reflects the experience of a large number in the Christian community, and this with-5 out much regard to sectarian relations. We suddenly find ourselves without any matured principles to guide us in the most trying crisis in the history of the nation and we can recall instances in which, with more or less of explicitness, we have committed ourselves to a policy which a severe test assures us to be wholly inadequate. Hence the change of conviction and, to a much greater extent, of feeling which has come over us. We are free to confess that We have been in the habit of over-estimating the civilization of the age and the country in which we live. Years ago we learned from Gibbon what might be expected of barbarians. But we indulged the hope that the Goths and Vandals belonged only to the early time. We did not expect that an Alaric could come from the land that had given birth to a Washington. The humilia-a ting fact of slavery, of property in man, was indeed before us; and a class of teachers insisted with tolerably severe logic, that a man who would appropriate to his own use the unpaid toil of another, could scruple at nothing. But we had personal acquaintances among slave-holders, and knew that such. An inference, however conclusive as a matter of logic, was not just in point of fact. We could give the names of slave-holders who, aside from what is involved in the fact of being slave-holders, would neither lie, nor steal, nor do an inhuman act. Excerpt from The Spiritual Body In the rath Chapter of the Second Epistle to the Corinthians the Apostle attempts to describe it. About fourteen years before the time of writing (that is to say in 43 or 44 a.d.) he had a wonderful experience in which his spiritual consciousness had for the time been so enlarged that he hardly seemed to be the same individual and in speaking of that which he in this state of rapture became, he speaks of himself as having been changed almost into a different person. The experience is beyond human utterance, but the important point to notice for the present purpose is a phrase repeated twice over in ahnost the same words. He says he does not know whether he was in the body or out of the body at that time. He is straining thought and language to express something that is too great for speech. In one sense he felt he was in the body, in another sense he felt he was outside it. That was the strange paradox. In that moment of ecstatic vision the spiritual body, which had grown strong within its sheltering prison, broke loose for a time and performed its spiritual functions unhampered by the grosser body of the flesh. And thus he was both within the body and without it at the same instant. He was within the spiritual body which with its ethereal movements was a perfect vehicle of his ecstatic experience, and he was outside the natural body which for that short time of rapture had almost been cast off. Thus St. Paul knew by experience that there is a spiritual body. As to the nature of this body he seems at first to have formed no theory, yet as years passed his experience could not but work within his mind and help him when in answer to the questioning of the Corinthians he first expounded the Doctrine of a Spiritual Body. Another element which bore a supreme part in forming this conception within the Apostle's mind was no doubt the glorified form of the risen Lord which appeared to him at his con version. Something he saw and heard in that great crisis of his life which convinced him that the Lord was living in a bodily yet spiritual state. This happened probably nine years before the experience just alluded to, and on it St. Paul based his belief in a bodily resurrection of the Christian. Excerpt from The Christian Lady's Magazine: January, 1840 It never was in the Editor's contemplation to make this little work a controversial one: simply to set forth the truth, in varied and attractive garbs as abi lity might be given, and the kind help of friends assist her to do, was the whole of her aim. But events of stirring character have come to pass, a crisis of great moment has drawn nearer and nearer; the church has felt many shocks from those winds and waves that are destined to prove its stability on the Rock; and even women that were at case have been called upon to rise up, and to keep watch and ward with their brethren. It is for this cause that the Christian Lady's Magazine has perhaps appeared to lose somewhat of its feminine character, while in duty constrained to give notice to those within the house, of some mighty wave rolling on, some men acing cloud darkening the horizon, some sapping flood creeping stealthily towards the foundation of the building. From such duty the Editor never did, and with God's help, never will shrink back. The consequence has been an experience new, and cer tainly painful to her. Attacks, some of them coarse and abusive, in the public prints that avowedly ad vocate the cause of Popery, Infidelity, and Republi canism: some harsh, bitter, and contemptuous, from a party of another class, who arrogate to themselves an infallibility that will not stand the test of scrip ture; and along with these, abundance of private anonymous rebukes, breathing the Spirit of arrogance and ill-will. Certainly if the Editor felt at liberty to assume the character of a careless daughter, ' to sit down again and be at case, it would wonderfully smooth her path, and might lead to the attainment of more gmeral approval: but this must not he. The tale that is told, of the fleeting years of one oh scure individual, and that individual a female, shall not, she humbly trusts, be the tale of Meroz. America S Preacher And His Message written by Timo Pokki and has been published by University Press of America this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Although the popular literature concerned with Billy Graham as an evangelical icon is vast, there have been few serious academic considerations of his religious views. In America's Preacher and His Message, Timo Pokki provides the most extensive systematic analysis to date on Graham's theology, paying particular attention to views surrounding conversion and sanctification. The study not only provides a detailed analysis of Graham's thoughts on these topics, but also investigates the impact of Calvinism and Arminianism on revivalism and evangelicalism in general.
