In 1861, a half-century before Arnold Schoenberg's break with tonality, a young composer associated with Liszt saw a threshold to musical modernism as lodged in the "suspension of the main key." As the unified tonal perspective of earlier music yielded increasingly to dualistic key structures often laden with chromaticism, the language of music was transformed. In The Second Practice of Nineteenth-Century Tonality, nine prominent theorists and historians explore aspects of this musical evolution, from Schubert to the end of the nineteenth century. Though few would argue against the notion of an inherently tonal quality within the music of Anton Bruckner, recent decades have seen a profusion of frustrated efforts to parse the seemingly ambiguous harmonic nature of his symphonic compositions. Indeed, Bruckner's compositional output has largely defied comprehensive analytical attempts from either Schenkerian or neo-Riemannian-functionalist perspectives. The difficulties encountered by music theorists has led, in part, to a significant exclusion of the composer's oeuvre from discussion concerning Austro-Germanic music of the late-Romantic era. Yet, there can be no denying Bruckner's prominence as a composer, instrumentalist, and teacher of harmony and counterpoint in Vienna through the waning years of the nineteenth century. Motivated by analyses by Derrick Puffett and Charles Smith, and employing as its primary source the initial thematic statement from the third movement of Bruckner's final, unfinished symphony, this study chiefly refrains from deciphering the harmonic framework of the music in favor of a contrapuntal reading of essential voice leading. In addition to motivic analyses, justification for such an approach derives from evaluation of the composer's socio-cultural background and musical training, which suggest that Bruckner was composing from an inclination rooted as much in the Baroque, as it was pre-modern.

The question of tonality's origins in music's pitch content has long vexed many scholars of music theory. However, tonality is not ultimately defined by pitch alone, but rather by pitch's interaction with elements like rhythm, meter, phrase structure, and form. Hearing Homophony investigates the elusive early history of tonality by examining a constellation of late-Renaissance popular songs which flourished throughout Western Europe at the turn of the seventeenth century. Megan Kaes Long argues that it is in these songs, rather than in more ambitious secular and sacred works, that the foundations of eighteenth century style are found. Arguing that tonality emerges from features of modal counterpoint - in particular, the rhythmic, phrase structural, and formal processes that govern it - and drawing on the arguments of theorists such as Dahlhaus, Powers, and Barnett, she asserts that modality and tonality are different in kind and not mutually exclusive.
