Cheiro remains one of the most widely respected and studied figures in the world of futurology. His predictions were astounding and his accuracy amazing. For instance, no one believed his prediction that Prince of Wales would one day become King Edward VII of England and would die in his 69th year, yet history proved him right. The genius of Cheiro was startling to others as well. He told one Mrs. Leiter that her daughter would marry a man who would rule a country in the East; she married the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon. Even sceptical Mark Twain was surprised with Cheiro’s readings. He visited the palmist incognito; the former did not know who the visitor was. Reading his hands Cheiro predicted that he would become a famous writer, and that his real name started with S; the author’s real name was Samuel S Clemens. Wrote Mark Twain after the visit, “Cheiro has exposed my character to me with humiliating accuracy. I thought that I would say nothing about his penetrating genius, but in the end I had to accept it.” He warned Oscar Wilde of his future disgrace; told Lord Russel that he would become the Chief Justice of England three years before he did so. Reading the palm of William Pirrie, chairman of Harland and Wolf, builders of the Titanic he predicted a major crisis with the ship. In this book the author shares his life experiences on how and where he learned Palmistry and his experiences of reading hands in England, America and Europe.

"For Lewis and Wren, their first year of marriage is also their last. A few weeks after their wedding, Lewis receives a rare diagnosis. He will retain most of his consciousness, memories, and intellect, but his physical body will gradually turn into a great white shark. As Lewis develops the features and impulses of one of the most predatory creatures in the ocean, his complicated artist's heart struggles to make peace with his unfulfilled dreams. At first, Wren internally resists her husband's fate. Is there a way for them to be together after Lewis changes? Then, a glimpse of Lewis's developing carnivorous nature activates long-repressed memories for Wren, whose story vacillates between her childhood living on a houseboat in Oklahoma, her time with a college ex-girlfriend, and her unusual friendship with a woman pregnant with twin birds. Woven throughout this bold novel is the story of Wren's mother, Angela, who becomes pregnant with Wren at fifteen in an abusive relationship amidst her parents' crumbling marriage. In the present, all of Wren's grief eventually collides, and she is forced to make an impossible choice"--

Women Reading And The Cultural Politics Of Early Modern England

Women Reading And The Cultural Politics Of Early Modern England written by Edith Snook and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Literary Criticism categories.
A study of the representation of reading in early modern Englishwomen's writing, this book exists at the intersection of textual criticism and cultural history. It looks at depictions of reading in women's printed devotional works, maternal advice books, poetry, and fiction, as well as manuscripts, for evidence of ways in which women conceived of reading in sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century England. Among the authors and texts considered are Katherine Parr, Lamentation of a Sinner; Anne Askew, The Examinations of Anne Askew; Dorothy Leigh, The Mothers Blessing; Elizabeth Grymeston, Miscelanea Meditations Memoratives; Aemelia Lanyer, Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum; and Mary Wroth, The First Part of the Countess of Montgomery's Urania. Attentive to contiguities between representations of reading in print and reading practices found in manuscript culture, this book also examines a commonplace book belonging to Anne Cornwallis (Folger Folger MS V.a.89) and a Passion poem presented by Elizabeth Middleton to Sarah Edmondes (Bod. MS Don. e.17). Edith Snook here makes an original contribution to the ongoing scholarly project of historicizing reading by foregrounding female writers of the early modern period. She explores how women's representations of reading negotiate the dynamic relationship between the public and private spheres and investigates how women might have been affected by changing ideas about literacy, as well as how they sought to effect change in devotional and literary reading practices. Finally, because the activity of reading is a site of cultural conflict - over gender, social and educational status, and the religious or national affiliation of readers - Snook brings to light how these women, when they write about reading, are engaged in structuring the cultural politics of early modern England.
