Toward the middle of the 17th century, the Ottoman Empire is still at the apex of its power. Mehmed IV's ascent to the throne at the age of six, however, greatly intensifies the struggles for power and control in the Sultan's court. In a world dominated by men, two intelligent, beautiful and ambitious women wage an open war. The young Sultan's grandmother and his mother fight over the regency: a severe battle in which all means are allowed to make sure only one of them would come out victorious. Who will overcome her adversary? Will it be the experienced Kosem Mahpeyker, who has pulled the strings of power covertly during the reign of five sultans? Or the tenacious Turhan Hatice, who became Queen Mother at only twenty years of age? All of this takes place against the background of a panoramic view of the Ottoman Empire and one of its most secretive parts: the Sultan's harem, an enigmatic place in the heart of the palace that houses hundreds of beautiful girls, where fiery passions and monstrous manipulations and intrigues determine the future. The harem is a veritable oasis of love but also of debauchery, of friendships but also of betrayals, of rises to but also of falls from power. You are atop the hierarchy today only to be eaten by the fish in the Golden Horn tomorrow. This is an intense story that reveals how the seemingly boring events from the historical chronicles may prove far more intriguing than we first assumed.

Suleyman the Magnificent, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, has a harem of three hundred beautiful concubines. His soul and eyes desire only one; the one who makes him a poet. Only one makes him long for her every touch. What is her aphrodisiac? Roxelana, known as Hurrem-The Cheerful One in the harem has a brilliant mind within her irresistible body. She holds a 75 year old secret that could sow seeds of destruction in the Ottoman Sultanate; a secret granted her by none other than the Sultan's own mother. What is this secret curse? What power does Roxelana wield over Suleyman that he would break tradition and make her queen? Is it simply love or something more that tempts the Sultan? Why does she learn the ancient art of Kama Sutra from an Indian princess in the harem and then send Suleyman to war? And why would the Sultan's mother entrust the great secret to a mere harem girl? Rich with eroticism of the harem and the twisting, intrigues of the empire ruled from Topkapi palace, Harem Secrets creates embroidery of compelling plots since the fall of Constantinople. At the height of power, two figures change world history in Europe and Asia; history that was later influenced through a legendary harem dancer, Anarkali of Ottoman origins. Her mystery continues into the Palaces of Mogul emperors.

"This all-color book describes the Turkish harem in a comprehensive manner, bringing it to life with sensual, evocative illustrations and well-documented text." "The author describes the reigns and idiosyncracies of the Sultans and their favorites and brilliantly traces the decline of a once mighty empire grown soft from the corruption of absolute power, the influence of Europe, and above all, the usurpation of control by the very women who were supposed to live in complete subjugation to their lords and masters." "Illustrated by documents of the period, old and new photographs, and masterpieces by Renoir, Delacroix, Matisse, and Ingres among others, this revelation of a lost way of life will enchant anybody whose imagination has been inflamed by tales of a thousand and one nights."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Secrets of the Harem is an anonymous insider view on historical Turkish harems. Excerpt: "Many people have an idea that Turkish women absolutely do nothing that is either useful or ornamental aside from the decoration of their own persons, but that is not altogether true, as my residence of over a year in their country taught me, for they are really dextrous with the needle and do work which is as fine as that done by the sisters in the convents, or that of the wives of the feudal noblemen of olden times. The favorite pastime of the Turkish women is the bath, which brings together the wives and slaves of all the well-to-do Turks, and it is like a picnic of school children. These wives, most of them very young—some, indeed, not over twelve or fourteen years old—take their lunch along, and they eat and steam, plunge and splash, and play pranks upon each other in the wildest glee the whole day long. No fear of an angry husband haunts their minds, for they are not expected to do anything, and their husbands very rarely enter the harems before six o'clock. By this time they are all back, rosy and sweet from their bath."

Experiencing a city without knowing the history is like watching a blockbuster movie without a story – all sets and visuals, but devoid of dialogue, plot, and drama. We are travelling more than ever, but the story telling has not kept up. An amazing city like Istanbul becomes just another mosque, another palace and yet another sultan. This book aims to bring to life the stories behind the locations. Each story is accompanied by a lesson that can be applied to our lives. Why does a chain hang over the entrance to the Blue Mosque? Why do the chandeliers of Grand Mosques often have an ostrich egg at their centre? Who was Fatih and what made him special? This is a guidebook that prioritises the history of the locations and lessons we can learn from the past. If you want to experience Istanbul in a way that is a feast for the heart and mind as much as it is for the eyes and stomach, read on.

Twelve scholars from the fields of English, French, and German literature here examine the complex ways in which the human body becomes the privileged semiotic model through which eighteenth-century culture defines its political and conceptual centers. In making clear that the deployment of the body varies tremendously depending on what is meant by the 'human body', the essays draw on popular literature, poetics and aesthetics, garden architecture, physiognomy, beauty manuals, pornography and philosophy, as well as on canonical works in the genres of the novel and the drama.

Epistolary Bodies written by Elizabeth Cook and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-07-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

Informed by Jurgen Habermas's public sphere theory, this book studies the popular eighteenth-century genre of the epistolary narrative through readings of four works: Montesquieu's Lettres persanes (1721), Richardson's Clarissa (1749-50), Riccoboni's Lettres de Mistriss Fanni Butlerd (1757), and Crevecoeur's Letters from an American Farmer (1782).The author situates epistolary narratives in the contexts of eighteenth-century print culture: the rise of new models of readership and the newly influential role of the author; the model of contract derived from liberal political theory; and the techniques and aesthetics of mechanical reproduction. Epistolary authors used the genre to formulate a range of responses to a cultural anxiety about private energies and appetites, particularly those of women, as well as to legitimate their own authorial practices. Just as the social contract increasingly came to be seen as the organising instrument of public, civic relations in this period, the author argues that the epistolary novel serves to socialise and regulate the private subject as a citizen of the Republic of Letters.
