More than six centuries ago a stranger stumbled on a village in a remote valley in Northern Italy, seeking refuge from vengeance in the world outside. But there was something different about the valley, something strange about its people. Nothing was as it seemed. Did chance take him there, or were greater forces at work, calling him to play a role? Guided by fate, he would find himself at the center of an ancient mystery--and for a time the heritage of civilizations would rest in his hands. Before he was done, he would devise a gift like none before and vanish into history, leaving behind the seeds of rebirth and hope for future generations... Sanctuary of the Gods is vividly told, bringing history to life for its readers. The main story takes place at the dawn of the Renaissance, when European civilization was beginning its painful rise back towards the heights it had achieved in the days of Greece and Rome. There are also three detailed flashbacks to earlier periods: -A similar time more than 2,000 years before, when Greek civilization first began -The high point of Greek civilization in the age of Alexander The Great -Rome's decline, in the years following the Empire's conversion to Christianity. Sanctuary of the Gods is a story of survival against all odds, of human triumph over death and annihilation. It shows how a tiny village in Northern Italy became the last secret sanctuary of the old pagan religion, surviving through nine hundred years in hiding only to perish in the Black Death that swept Europe in 1348, and how, in those dark and terrifying days, a handful of survivors created the Tarot cards so that the heart of their religion would not perish with the sanctuary, but would survive in a hostile world, its origins forgotten, until the time was right for its rediscovery. For readers who are intrigued by the story and want to get to the heart of it, to discover the truth behind the things they've read, an appendix is provided. There, in 120 pages complemented by numerous illustrations, what at first seems too incredible to be anything but fiction is transformed by the evidence into compelling fact. Sanctuary is beautifully written with a clarity that brings the past to life and holds the reader's interest from beginning to end. For a Pagan or Tarot enthusiast, or for lovers of historical fiction, its appeal is apparent. But the story is powerful, and even readers who have never been interested in these subjects will find the book hard to put down. It gains the readers's attention because the characters and scenes described are lively and interesting, and because its vision is fresh and new, entirely unexpected. Be prepared for some surprises: the view from the Sanctuary is not like anything you have ever seen before...

"Kirby's prose is exceptional.... Readers who enjoy spiritual literature will find this novel to their liking. It is also recommended for readers who enjoy human drama, historical fiction, and adventure." - Robin Edmunds, Foreword Clarion Review "In a world of scandalizing reality shows this book is a lyrical and uplifting story of redemption and faith. It is a breath of fresh air that is much needed in the literary world " - Carolyn Bracken Orr, Decatur Daily In the grimy, crime-ridden New York City of the 1890's, three lives are torn apart in a single, savage day. The events that unite them, for better and for worse, come together in a gripping tale of two continents that is ripe with danger and discovery. In Search of Sanctuary, Jamie E. Kirby's epic historical novel, charts the perilous journey of these three young souls, who must lose themselves in order to reinvent themselves. In evocative period detail, In Search of Sanctuary follows the young and earnest Aiden, the fearsome Mac, and the artistic Shamus as each seeks sanctuary from a vicious massacre on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Each one believes he or she is the sole survivor, yet their separate journeys are intertwined in ways that even an ocean cannot sever. Introspection and intriguing new friends and foes catapult these three into worlds they could never have imagined back in New York City. In Search of Sanctuary serves up a riveting parable that transports readers to another time, while mining ageless themes of faith, love, and moral fiber. Engaging, complex characters, a riveting plot, and a haunting similarity to three separate passages to peace provide readers with a message of hope embedded in a story seasoned with every conceivable human trait and behavior.

Alex Helsby was lucky. He had retired from work in the North West of England in his mid fifties when the electronic security company that he had owned with his two brothers was purchased by a national company. Now living comfortably it was his intention to concentrate on his favourite pass times, archaeology and history. After working on archaeological sites all over the UK he decided to try nearer home. He was aware that the fields around his local church were the venue and battlefield of the second English Civil War of 1648. When he realised that the battlefields were owned and farmed by one of his fellow churchgoers, he asked and was given permission to use his metal detector on the land. Alex had some early success until he had to relocate to another nearby field when a severe storm had brought down many trees and rendered the field unsafe and unworkable. The move to the second field proved to be staggeringly successful even under the threat of interference from a third party with criminal intentions. Alex made significant finds of articles which related to the English civil war. But a find of more significance was a very old church safe which when eventually removed from the field was found to contain a plethora of awe inspiring gold and silver church relics, a quantity of documents, and a mysterious cryptic message. Once Alex had cracked the cryptic message known as the sanctuary cipher, he along with his wife revealed a secret tunnel beneath their local church. With permission from the rector the couple conducted a dangerous clandestine operation to reveal what had been hidden. Their efforts revealed long lost priceless literary works and an insight into the formation of the early freemasons.
