Romance was a theme that ran through much of Northrop Frye's corpus, and his notebooks and typed notes on the subject are plentiful. This unpublished material, written between 1944 and 1989, traces a remarkable re-evaluation in his thinking over the course of time. As a young scholar, Frye insisted that romance was an expression of cultural decadence; however, in his later years, he thought of it as "the structural core of all fiction." The unpublished material Michael Dolzani has gathered for Northrop Frye's Notebooks on Romance shows how the pattern and conventions of romance inform the writing of history, anthropology, psychology, philosophy, and theology. While Frye is best known for his writing on myth and biblical scholarship, he himself eventually conceived of romance as the true and equal contrary to myth and scripture, a "secular scripture" whose message is de te fabula, "this story is about you." Given the current popular revival of romance in fiction and film, the appearance of Frye's unpublished work on romance is of profound importance.

Scripture A Very Theological Proposal written by Angus Paddison and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-10 with Religion categories.

To identify the biblical texts as 'Scripture' is to make a series of specific claims about this text: that it is drawn into the activity of the triune God of Israel; that its ultimate destination is the worshipping church; and that it has a ministry in shaping Christian thinking and acting. Scripture: A Very Theological Proposal advances that the resources for reading Scripture, understanding its claims, and acting upon them will be found by looking to the church's life and doctrines. Reading Scripture with a host of theologians, Paddison proposes a hermeneutic appropriate to reading Scripture both as divine address and the book of the church. The book positions itself by resisting accounts in which Scripture's relationship to God and its life within the church are understood competitively, as if the more we attend to one the less we are attending to the other. Chapters further explore a doctrine of Scripture and the relationship of ethics, doctrine, and preaching to Scripture. A final chapter asks, can, or should, Scripture be read in the university?

Taking On The Gods written by Merle R. Jordan and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-11-13 with Religion categories.

Taking on the Gods explores a clinical theological approach to the treatment of individuals, couples, and families suffering from neurotic styles of life. Merle Jordan exposes the origins of neuroses in idolatry: the substitution of false psychological gods for the true God as the center of ultimate reality. In attempting to earn the approval of these false gods and to escape their harsh judgment, one enters into a second idolatry: becoming one's own Messiah, parts of the self are sacrificed to placate the false gods. The resulting personality distortions are the source of many emotional difficulties. Jordan discusses not only the role of pastoral counselors in helping clients confront their idols, but also the counselors responsibility to recognize their own false gods. Topics covered include: Pastoral Counseling as the Encounter Between Gods, The Implicit Religious Drama in Marital and Family Counseling, The Operational Theology of the ÒCommon ColdÓ - Depression, and Self-justification Versus Justification by Faith Through Grace. According to Jordan, helping people to 'take on their gods,Ó to free themselves to experience the loving God, is the heart of the pastoral counselor's task.

Buddhist Scriptures As Literature written by Ralph Flores and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-01-01 with Religion categories.

Buddhist Scriptures as Literature explores the drama, lyricism, and compelling storylines in Buddhist sacred writings, while illustrating how rhetoric and ideology are at work in shaping readers' reactions. Ralph Flores argues that the Buddha's life story itself follows an archetypal quest-romance pattern: regal surroundings are abandoned and the ensuing feats are heroic. The story can be read as an epic, but it also has a comic plot: confusions and trials until the Prince becomes utterly selfless, having found his true element—nirvana. Making use of contemporary literary theory, Flores offers new readings of texts such as the Nikāyas, the Dhammapada, the Heart Sutra, Zen koans, Shantideva's Way of the Bodhisattva, and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Understanding these works as literature deepens our sense of the unfolding of their teachings, of their exuberant histories, and of their relevance for contemporary life.
