The theme of intersubjectivity - the relationship of "I" and "Other" - has dominated philosophy in the 20th century. In The Other, Michael Theunissen establishes himself as a first-rate interpreter and critic of modern continental philosophers who have explored this theme. Theunissen examines the I-Other relationship from a historical and philosophical perspective, focusing in particular on the distinctions between transcendentalism and dialogicalism in the approaches to "Otherness" taken by Edmund Husserl and Martin Buber. Theunissen then uses these broad contrasts to uncover the basic philosophical under-pinnings of various modern approaches to intersubjectivity. His examination of the work of Husserl, Heidegger and Sartre, and Buber is followed by essays on the work of Alfred Schütz and Karl Jaspers. The book concludes with a postscript in which Theunissen reassesses his previous critique of transcendentalism and offers a moderated approach to dialogicalism. Michael Theunissen is professor of philosophy at the Free University of Berlin. This book is included in the series Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought, edited by Thomas McCarthy,

This study, first published in 1984, presents an explanation and critical examination of the theories of Sartre, Heidegger, Husserl and Hegel on the fundamental relationships between persons. It also synthesizes the results into a new conception of one’s relation to other people. Sartre’s famous discussion of ‘the Look’ in his early treatise, Being and Nothingness, is the point of departure and central text. Since Sartre critically responds to his three famous predecessors, these thinkers are given an independent hearing. The book demonstrates various ways in which persons are internally related to one another, shows that one’s access to other people typically does not compare unfavourably with one’s access to oneself, and establishes the importance of a prior comprehension of the status of other people for an adequate treatment of knowing them.

Existentialist Ontology and Human ConsciousnessThe majority of the distinguished scholarly articles in this volume focus on Sartre's early philosophical work, which dealt first with imagination and the emotions, then with the critique of Husserl's notion of a transcendental ego, and finally with systematic ontology presented in his best-known book, Being and Nothingness. In addition, since his preoccupation with ontological questions and especially with the meanings of ego, self, and consciousness endured throughout his career, other essays discuss these themes in light of later developments both in Sartre's own thought and in the phenomenological, hermeneutic, and analytic traditions.

Sartre S Anthropology As A Hermeneutics Of Praxis written by Kristian Klockars and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-04 with Philosophy categories.

First published in 1998, this volume deals with the legacy of Sartre and functions as a way of going beyond Sartre by means of Sartre, aiming to understand how we are to understand what we ourselves do and how we are to understand human being and human reality. Kristian Klockars’ main aim is intended to communicate three questions: how close Sartre’s later anthropology comes to hermeneutics, whether the idea of a hermeneutics of praxis could be seen as a possible solution to the internal tensions of Sartre’s conception, thinking with Sartre beyond Sartre, and whether a hermeneutics of praxis can constitute a living challenge to contemporary thought.
