The geosciences are one of the fields leading the way in advancing semantic technologies. This book continues the dialogue and feedback between the geoscience and semantic web communities. Increasing data volumes within the geosciences makes it no longer practical to copy data and perform local analysis. Hypotheses are now being tested through online tools that combine and mine pools of data. This evolution in the way research is conducted is commonly referred to as e-Science. As e-Science has flourished, the barriers to free and open access to data have been lowered and the need for semantics has been heighted. As the volume, complexity, and heterogeneity of data resources grow, geoscientists are creating new capabilities that rely on semantic approaches. Geoscience researchers are actively working toward a research environment of software tools and interfaces to data archives and services with the goals of full-scale semantic integration beginning to take shape. The members of this emerging semantic e-Science community are increasingly in need of semantic-based methodologies, tools and infrastructure. A feedback system between the geo- and computational sciences is forming. Advances in knowledge modeling, logic-based hypothesis checking, semantic data integration, and knowledge discovery are leading to advances in scientific domains, which in turn are validating semantic approaches and pointing to new research directions. We present mature semantic applications within the geosciences and stimulate discussion on emerging challenges and new research directions.

This dissertation addresses several problems in the context of publishing and consuming Linked Data. It describes these problems from the perspectives of three stakeholders: the Linked Data provider, developer and scientist. The Linked Data provider is faced with impractical data re-use and costly Linked Data hosting solutions. Developers face difficulties in finding, navigating and using Linked Datasets. Scientists lack the resources and methods to evaluate their work on Linked Data at large. This dissertation presents a number of novel approaches that address these issues, such as: - The LOD Laundromat: a centralized service that re-publishes cleaned, queryable and structurally annotated Linked Datasets. In 2015 the Laundromat was awarded first prize in the Dutch national Linked Open Data competition, and third prize in the European equivalent; - SampLD: A relevance-based sampling algorithm that enables publishers to decrease Linked Data hosting costs; - YASGUI: A feature-rich query editor for accessing SPARQL endpoints; - LOD Lab: An evaluation paradigm that enables scientists to increase the breadth and scale of their Linked Data evaluations. This work provides a unique overview of problems related to publishing and consuming Linked Data. The novel approaches presented here improve the state-of-the-art for Linked Data publishers, developers and scientists, and are a step towards a web of Linked Data that is more accessible and technically scalable.

The Semantic Web is a young discipline, even if only in comparison to other areas of computer science. Nonetheless, it already exhibits an interesting history and evolution. This book is a reflection on this evolution, aiming to take a snapshot of where we are at this specific point in time, and also showing what might be the focus of future research. This book provides both a conceptual and practical view of this evolution, especially targeted at readers who are starting research in this area and as support material for their supervisors. From a conceptual point of view, it highlights and discusses key questions that have animated the research community: what does it mean to be a Semantic Web system and how is it different from other types of systems, such as knowledge systems or web-based information systems? From a more practical point of view, the core of the book introduces a simple conceptual framework which characterizes Intelligent Semantic Web Systems. We describe this framework, the components it includes, and give pointers to some of the approaches and technologies that might be used to implement them. We also look in detail at concrete systems falling under the category of Intelligent Semantic Web Systems, according to the proposed framework, allowing us to compare them, analyze their strengths and weaknesses, and identify the key fundamental challenges still open for researchers to tackle.

Managing And Consuming Completeness Information For Rdf Data Sources written by F. Darari and has been published by IOS Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-12 with Computers categories.
The increasing amount of structured data available on the Web is laying the foundations for a global-scale knowledge base. But the ever increasing amount of Semantic Web data gives rise to the question – how complete is that data? Though data on the Semantic Web is generally incomplete, some may indeed be complete. In this book, the author deals with how to manage and consume completeness information about Semantic Web data. In particular, the book explores how completeness information can guarantee the completeness of query answering. Optimization techniques for completeness reasoning and the conducting of experimental evaluations are provided to show the feasibility of the approaches, as well as a technique for checking the soundness of queries with negation via reduction to query completeness checking. Other topics covered include completeness information with timestamps, and two demonstrators – CORNER and COOL-WD – are provided to show how a completeness framework can be realized. Finally, the book investigates an automated method to generate completeness statements from text on the Web. The book will be of interest to anyone whose work involves dealing with Web-data completeness.
