Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Søren Aabye Kierkegaard was the father of existentialism. He was born in Copenhagen in 1813. He entered the University of Copenhagen in 1830, but it took him more than a decade to finish his degree. He passed his exams in 1840 and a year later completed his dissertation, On the Concept of Irony: With Constant Reference to Socrates. #2 Kierkegaard wrote about the relation between ethics and religion, and he suggested that faith was about the attempt to follow Christ in his self-denial, suffering, and ultimately in his humiliation. He no longer wanted to participate in making a fool of God. #3 The ethical is the universal, and it applies to everyone at all times. It is immanent in itself and has nothing outside itself that is its end, but it is its own end. The single individual, sensuously and psychically qualified in immediacy, is the individual who has his end in the universal. #4 Faith is the paradox that the individual is higher than the universal, yet justified before it. It is a higher position that cannot be mediated, and yet it exists eternally. It is this paradox that Abraham believed in, and it is this paradox that makes faith exist.

This Selected Issues paper for the Republic of San Marino analyzes options for managing systemic liquidity risk. The paper states that financial dollarization/euroization—as in the case of San Marino—or a currency board arrangement can complicate banking crisis management and increase the vulnerability of financial systems to liquidity shocks because they limit the ability of the monetary authority to act as a lender of last resort. The paper reviews the current pension system of San Marino, in comparison with other European pension systems, and analyzes its sustainability.

Adonis written by Carlo Caruso and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-05 with Art categories.

In this detailed treatment of the myth of Adonis in post-Classical times, Carlo Caruso provides an overview of the main texts, both literary and scholarly, in Latin and in the vernacular, which secured for the Adonis myth a unique place in the Early Modern revival of Classical mythology. While aiming to provide this general outline of the myth's fortunes in the Early Modern age, the book also addresses three points of primary interest, on which most of the original research included in the work has been conducted. First, the myth's earliest significant revival in the age of Italian Humanism, and particularly in the poetry of the great Latin poet and humanist Giovanni Pontano. Secondly, the diffusion of syncretistic interpretations of the Adonis myth by means of authoritative sixteenth-century mythological encyclopaedias. Thirdly, the allegorical/political use of the Adonis myth in G.B. Marino's (1569-1625) Adone, published in Paris in 1623 to celebrate the Bourbon dynasty and to support their legitimacy with regard to the throne of France.

Divining The Oracle written by Massimo Ossi and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-07-15 with Music categories.

Claudio Monteverdi's historical position in music has been compared to that of Shakespeare in literature: almost exact contemporaries, each worked from traditional beginnings to transform nearly every genre he attempted. In this book, Massimo Ossi delves into the most significant aspect of Monteverdi's career: the development, during the first years of the seventeenth century, of a new compositional style he called the seconda prattica or "second manner." Challenged in print for the unconventional aspects of his music, Monteverdi found himself at the center of a debate between defenders of Renaissance principles and the newest musical currents of the time. The principles of the seconda prattica, Ossi argues in this sophisticated analysis of Monteverdi's writings, music, and approaches to text-setting, were in fact much more significant to the course of Monteverdi's career than previously thought by modern scholars-not only did Monteverdi continue to pursue their aesthetic and theoretical implications for the rest of his life, but they also affected his dramatic compositions as well as his chamber vocal music and sacred works. Ossi "divines the oracle" of Monteverdi's ambiguous theoretical concepts in a clear way and in terms of pure music; his book will enhance our understanding of Monteverdi as one of the most significant figures in western music history.

The Renaissance Epic And The Oral Past written by Anthony Welch and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-13 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book offers a close survey of the changing audiences, modes of reading, and cultural expectations that shaped epic writing in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. According to Anthony Welch, the theory and practice of epic poetry in this period—including little-known attempts by many epic poets to have their work orally recited or set to music—must be understood in the context of Renaissance musical humanism. Welch’s approach leads to a fresh perspective on a literary culture that stood on the brink of a new relationship with antiquity and on the history of music in the early modern era.

Curious And Modern Inventions written by Rebecca Cypess and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-22 with Music categories.

Early seventeenth-century Italy saw a revolution in instrumental music. Large, varied, and experimental, the new instrumental repertoire was crucial for the Western tradition—but until now, the impulses that gave rise to it had yet to be fully explored. Curious and Modern Inventions offers fresh insight into the motivating forces behind this music, tracing it to a new conception of instruments of all sorts—whether musical, artistic, or scientific—as vehicles of discovery. Rebecca Cypess shows that early modern thinkers were fascinated with instrumental technologies. The telescope, the clock, the pen, the lute—these were vital instruments for leading thinkers of the age, from Galileo Galilei to Giambattista Marino. No longer used merely to remake an object or repeat a process already known, instruments were increasingly seen as tools for open-ended inquiry that would lead to new knowledge. Engaging with themes from the history of science, literature, and the visual arts, this study reveals the intimate connections between instrumental music and the scientific and artisanal tools that served to mediate between individuals and the world around them.
