Excerpt from The Sentiment of Rationality T most of our American Colleges there are Clubs formed by the students devoted to particular branches of learning; and these clubs have the laud able custom of inviting once or twice a year some maturer scholar to address them, the occasion often being made a public one. I have from time to time accepted such invitations, and afterwards had my dis course printed in one or other of the Reviews. It has seemed to me that these addresses might now be worthy of collection in a volume, as they shed explana tory light upon each other, and taken together express a tolerably definite philosophic attitude in a very un technical way. Were I obliged to give a short name to the attitude in question, I should call it that of radical empiri ca'sm, in spite of the fact that such brief nicknames are nowhere more misleading than in philosophy, I say 'empiricism, ' because it is contented to regard its most assured conclusions concerning matters of fact as hypotheses liable to modification in the course of future experience; and I say radical, ' because it treats the doctrine of monism itself as an hypothesis, and. Essays In Philosophy written by William James and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1978 with Philosophy categories.

Essays in Philosophy brings together twenty-one essays, reviews, and occasional pieces published by James between 1876 and 1910. They range in subject from a concern with the teaching of philosophy and appraisals of philosophers to analyses of important problems. Several of the essays, like "The Sentiment of Rationality" and "The Knowing of Things Together," are of particular significance in the development of the views of James's later works. All of them, as John McDermott says in his Introduction, are in a style that is "engaging and personal...witty, acerbic, compassionate, and polemical." Whether he is writing an article for the Nation of a definition of "Experience" for Baldwin's Dictionary or "The Mad Absolute" for the Journal of Philosophy, James is always unmistakably himself, and always readable.

Truth Rationality And Pragmatism written by Christopher Hookway and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with categories.

Christopher Hookway presents a series of studies of themes from the work of the great American philosopher Charles S. Peirce (1839-1914), often described as the founder of pragmatism. These themes centre on the question how we are able to investigate the world rationally; Peirce's ideas about this continue to play an important role in philosophy, logic, and semiotics, as Hookway shows. After an extended examination of Peirce's account of truth, and of its relations to his ideas about logic, reference, and representation, Hookway discusses his claim that rationality requires a system of 'scientific metaphysics'. The second half of the book studies the role of common sense, sentiments, and emotions in rationality. It concludes with discussions of Peirce's approach to religious belief and the role of pragmatism in his thought. These compelling essays (many of them published here for the first time) present the fruits of fifteen years of research on Peirce, but do so in a way that makes his ideas accessible and relevant for philosophers who are not specialists in the history of American thought. The introduction offers a general sketch of Peirce's philosophy as a way into the book for such readers, and draws together the themes of the essays.
