The practical application of the sentinel node concept is evaluated in this book. The concept is analyzed for breast cancer, malignant melanoma, tumors of the face, oropharynx, lung, gastrointestinal and urogenital tract. The first part of the book describes the function and use of the nuclear medicine equipment, the tracers used, colloid solutions and modern developments in histological and immunohistochemical lymph node investigations, as well as possible pitfalls. In the second part, specific tumor-related problems are described.

An intuitive, ingenious and powerful technique, sentinel lymph node biopsy has entered clinical practice with astonishing rapidity and now represents a new standard of care for melanoma and breast cancer patients, while showing great promise for the treatment of urologic, colorectal, gynecologic, and head and neck cancers. This text, written by international experts in the technique, provides a clear and comprehensive guide, presenting a detailed overview and discussing the various mapping techniques available and how these are applied in a number of leading institutions. This essential resource for surgical onocologists, pathologists, and specialists in nuclear medicine will also provide key information for those planning to start a sentinel lymph node program.

This book gathers an overview of the sentinel lymph node biopsy procedure among different surgical settings (i.e., melanoma, breast, thyroid, vulva, endometrium, cervix, colon, anus, liver, gastric, urological and ovarian cancers). This book consists of eighteen chapters; the rationale and the purpose of this technique, which allows adequate lymph node staging while sparing patients from unnecessary complete lymph node dissections and the traditional harmful complications associated with them are discussed.Furthermore, this book outlines the technical aspects of the procedure (which are also accurately covered) from the various intraoperative sentinel node detection techniques to the subsequent sentinel lymph node analysis methods. Some new techniques for node detection, such as the Sentimag® technique (superparamagnetic iron oxide particles detected by a magneto-metric probe) and some new techniques for node analysis, such as the one-step nucleic acid amplification (OSNA), are accurately discussed. Finally, this book provides information also on preoperative lymph node diagnostics and sentinel lymph node biopsy perioperative complications in different nodal districts. In particular, the complications of sentinel node biopsy and for sentinel node dissection are accurately discussed with a particular focus on breast cancer, melanoma and gynecological cancers.

In this volume an account is given of the technologies relevant to the detection of sentinel lymph nodes in the context of surgical oncology. This is a rapidly and evolving field, and the clinical applications discussed in this volume are exciting and important. A multidisciplinary team was assembled to discuss this subject in the light of direct experience gained by each of the groups in the previous 12 months. Clinical case material is presented and the methodology of sentinel lymph node imaging and detection is discussed in detail. The authors have assembled in a single volume a significant amount of personal data and a comprehensive literature review which will serve as a single reference and teaching source for all those interested in this critical technique relevant to the management of large numbers of patients in surgical oncology.

This book is intended for medical students and surgical trainees such as surgical residents and fellows. It provides a practical preparation guide for common surgical procedures. Operations are divided into twelve sections that cover commonly performed general surgery operations such as bariatric, breast, cardiothoracic, colorectal, minimally invasive, and more. The chapters included in these sections aim to assist residents and fellows in facilitating memorization of the operation sequence and movements required to perform a given task. It will also help enhance skill development in the operating room. Written by residents and highly experienced attending surgeons, Mental Conditioning to Perform Common Operations in General Surgery Training: A Systematic Approach to Expediting Skill Acquisition and Maintaining Dexterity in Performance provides a comprehensive systematic approach to performing surgical procedures.

Atlas Of Lymphoscintigraphy And Sentinel Node Mapping written by Giuliano Mariani and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-29 with Medical categories.

The main goal of the second edition of this book is to update the content on the rapidly growing field of lymphoscintigraphy, a radionuclide-based imaging procedure that provides information on the functional status of the lymphatic system. Although the technique was originally introduced to identify the cause of peripheral edema (i.e., blockage of the venous or lymphatic circulation), more recent and widespread applications include radioguided biopsy of the sentinel lymph node in patients with solid cancers. This procedure is crucial for the adequate planning of oncologic surgery in a growing number of cancers, most notably breast cancer, cutaneous melanoma, head and neck cancers, penile cancer, and cervical cancer. The book focuses on the latest advances in lymphoscintigraphy techniques, including both novel tracers recently approved for clinical use (especially in the field of sentinel lymph node mapping) and the expanding role of hybrid imaging with SPECT/CT – and in sentinel node detection using hybrid tracers (radiolabeled and fluorescent) for dual-signature guidance. Each chapter addresses the clinical application of lymphoscintigraphy in different anatomic areas or disease conditions. After an introductory section concerning the pathophysiology of the specific site/disease, the clinical relevance and impact of lymphoscintigraphy is demonstrated by a collection of richly illustrated teaching cases describing the lymphoscintigraphic patterns most commonly observed, as well as anatomic variants and technical pitfalls. Emphasis is placed on tomographic multimodality imaging. The book gathers contributions by experts in nuclear oncology, who have revised their chapters by updating the didactic material and adding clinical cases. Regarding sentinel lymph node biopsy in particular, a major distinction of this text is the incorporation of the staging guidelines of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (8th edition) into the didactic material.
