The four boys grow up in the rapidly changing, cosmopolitan city that is just beginning to recognize its aspirations. Kalu, the third son, dreams of being an artist. But dreams are easily obscured by circumstances. Kalus parents drift apart under the pressure of mutual resentments and casual violence. In school, Kalu cannot keep up with his rich English-speaking friends; only art gives him solace. But even as Samar grudgingly accepts his sons artistic aspirations, he is unwilling to support him. Faced with the possibility of joining the air force in his fathers footsteps, Kalu is forced to make an impossible choice. As much a story of a difficult childhood as a snapshot of India of the 1960s, The Sergeants Son is a must-read.

WHEN'S THE RIGHT TIME TO PROTEST?-WHAT'S THE PRICE YOU'RE WILLING TO PAY? With war looming and people protesting to end Jim Crow, Sergeant William Wanton finds himself at a crossroads: fighting battles with his son, his conscience, and racism. Sergeant Wanton, a highly decorated leader in the US Army, is a man who appreciates the opportunities his country has given him-and for that his thanks and sacrifice know no bounds. Willingly, he put his life on the line for America even though he was unjustly denied many of the same rights the country promised-and accorded-other citizens. Things are about to come to a head for this patriotic soldier. His community is engulfed in turmoil, overtaken by civil rights demonstrations. Sergeant Wanton, however, believes agitating and calling attention to inequities only inflames issues, so he forbids his son from joining the protests. Sergeant Wanton's son Will is from a new generation. A student heavily influenced by a professor, Dr. Davis, he defies his father, choosing to put his young life on the line to stand for an end to the racist, unconstitutional laws that keep the nation mired in segregation. Armed with a guitar and the inspirational words of a beloved teacher, young Will joins the protest rallies. No matter the personal cost to himself, he will fight to affirm America's highest ideals-equal rights and justice for all.

Soldier S Son written by Ben W. McClelland and has been published by Univ. Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Family & Relationships categories.

Memoir e World War II In December 1944 First Lieutenant Ewing R. Pete McClelland was captured in the Battle of the Bulge. Soon afterwards in an Allied air attack on the German POW camp where he was held, he was killed. Back home in Pennsylvania, his young widow and three small children survived him. Too young to have lasting recollections, Ben W. McClelland, the soldier's son who was just beyond infancy, became one of the war's fatherless innocents for whom the memories of others would form the paternal image. As the boy evolved into manhood, he reflected on how strange it was to grow up without this parent. In this narrative, a work of analysis as well as an odyssey into family heritage, the son undertakes a compelling search to find this man he could not remember. Through sentiment and nostalgia he depicts the innocence of childhood and recalls the many people who furnished impressions of his father. Old photographs, intimate letters, and interviews with the memory keepers and the storytellers in his extended family were resources from which the author recreated a time and a place and a person. This reconstruction resurrects a father vital in life and passion, a man chronicled in humorous family tales, realized among vivid small-town characters, and seen against the contrast of social changes of the1960s. The search for his father consumed most of a lifetime. As Ben W. McClelland was approaching the age of sixty, he had recovered this lost, never-before-realized identity. But to complete the circle of his quest, he undertook one thing more, the emotional pilgrimage to his father's grave in Europe. Although many other memoirs detail the experience of the soldier on the fronts of battle, this one brings an understanding of his sacrifice in wartime, of the resounding meaning of his death for his country and for his family, and of a son's profound yearning for answers that fulfill. Ben W. McClelland is a professor of English and holder of the Schillig Chair of English Composition at the University of Mississippi. Check the author's website."

When we met, Sam shared his own story with me and explained his growing passion to help other Soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress. I encouraged him to expand his efforts, and we kept in touch after he retired. He shared with me the feedback he received from Soldiers and their families after they had heard his presentations, and he gave me a copy of his first book, Changing the Military Culture of Silence. I could only be impressed as he carried his message across the country. George W. Casey General, US Army (Ret) Former Army Chief of Staff With our veterans committing suicide at an epidemic rate of 22 suicides per day, the chains of stigma must be broken. This book is a reflection of Sam Rhodess personal experiences; he wears the proverbial tee-shirt. One doesnt experience life without experiencing life-changing events. Its how one handles those changes that counts. This book addresses ways to handle those changes to effect a positive outcome. Charles T. Jones Colonel, KYARNG Deputy Chief of Staff Personnel CSM Rhodes carried the hidden wounds of three combat tours inside him when he returned to Fort Benning to serve as the CSM of the Infantry School Training Brigade. After much soul-searching and anguish, he finally realized and publicly acknowledged that he suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In doing so, he realized that part of his healing needed to include a concerted effort on his part to give back to the extended family he had come to know so well, his fellow Soldiers and their families, and to confront the issues plaguing him. Philip R. Tilly, Lieutenant Colonel, US Army (Ret)
