Excerpt from The Seven Deadly Sins The business of literature is the presentation of life, all true literature resolves itself into that. No presentation of life is complete without its sins, and every master of literary art has known it, from the poet King of Israel to Robert Browning. The imagination of the Middle Ages, in many ways more virile and expansive than our own, had a strong grasp of this fact, and realised that it is the sense of fault or error that lies at the root of every forward movement, that there is no real progress unless it is accompanied by a sense of sin. Other terms may be used to describe the dynamic power which has moved societies or individuals from lower ideals to higher, but if we get beyond words to things, we see the sense of the defective character, the unrealised ideal, always and everywhere as the moving force. To the Catholic Church, touched as it often has been and not always to its detriment, with pagan mysticism, the problem of evil was associated with a mystical number; and the succeeding pages are an endeavour to trace the various presentations of the Seven Deadly Sins as they have been given by men of powerful imagination, or profound insight, at different periods in our literary history. Excerpt from A Theory About Sin: In Relation to Some Facts of Daily Life; Lent Lectures on the Seven Deadly Sins The theory itself is almost beyond criticism. When once stated, its chief value consists in the foundation laid for further practical considerations. These I have endeavoured to make as plain as I had power to make them, and as full as was consistent with the time or space placed at my dis posal. Here, not less than in discussing the theory, I pre tend to no originality. Where it has been possible, I have freely availed myself of the labours of earlier writers, masters of the spiritual life: and the main object of the lectures is to adapt their wisdom to the common-place events of our own every-day existence. Excerpt from Tales of the Seven Deadly Sins: Being the Confessio Amantis of John Gower John Gower's book of old stories is here at last made current among Englishmen of every degree. The first way of its wider diffusion was by recitation of the story-tellers. It was their business to give pleasures of imagination to the people through their ears, when even the few who could read would also listen with enjoyment to a tale recited with dramatic energy. When the play of "Pericles" brought one of Gower's tales upon our stage in Shakespeare's time, John Gower himself was supposed to speak its Prologue in his chosen measure of eight-syllabled verse. His words then recalled to mind the old way of reciting as well as reading. The actor who, dressed as Gower, came before the people, said to them: - "To sing a song that old was sung, From ashes ancient Gower is come; Assuming man's infirmities To glad your ear and please your eyes. It hath been sung at festivals, On ember eves and holy ales; And lords and ladies in their lives Have read it for restoratives." To all of us Gower may now go on to repeat other lines of the same Prologue: - "If you, born in these latter times, When wit's more ripe, accept my rhymes; And that to hear an old man sing May to your wishes pleasure bring, I life would wish, and that I might Waste it for you, like taper light." Excerpt from The Seven Deadly Sins of London: Drawn in Seven Several Coaches, Through the Seven Several Gates of the City; Bringing the Plague With Them The tract now reprinted marks a half-way stage, in subject as well as in date, between The Wonderfull Yeare 1603 and the most famous of Dekker's prose pieces, The Guls H om booke. The descriptions of the Plague in The Wonderfull Yeare have a command of anecdote which can hardly be expected at a distance from the event; there are ghastly things to be found in The Seven Deadly Sinnes, but they are not so thick-coming and absorbing, and their interest is one among many. The Guls Homebooke, on the other hand, has the sole object of ridiculing the extravagances of the man about town and the life of public places in I609, and the task is joyously performed, with an unrivalled wealth of detail, In The Seven Deadly Sinnes Dekker had other game in View. Excerpt from The Seven Cardinal Sins: Indolence Envy In the year 1828 any tourist who was on his way from Blois to the little town of Pont Brillant to visit - as travellers seldom fail to do the famous castle of that name, the magnificent feudal abode of the Marquises Pont Brillant, would have been obliged to pass a farmhouse standing near the edge of the road, about two miles from the chateau. If this lonely dwelling attracted the attention of the traveller, he would have been almost certain to have regarded it with mingled melancholy and disgust as one of the too numerous specimens of hideous rural architecture in France, even when these habitations belong to persons possessed of a competence. This establishment consisted of a large barn and storehouse, with two long wings in the rear. The interior of the sort of parallelogram thus formed served as a courtyard, and was filled with piles of manure rotting in pools of stagnant water, for cow, horse, and sheep stables all opened into this enclosure, where all sorts of domestic animals, from poultry to hogs, were scratching and rooting. One of the wings in the rear served as the abode of the family. It was a story and a half high, and had no outlook save this loathsome courtyard, with the dirty, worm-eaten doors of the cow-stable for a horizon. Excerpt from The Seven Deadly Sinnes of London IT is as ordinarie a custome (for vs that are Bookish) to haue a bout with thee, after wee haue done with a Patron, as for Schollers (in the noble Science) to play at the woodden Rapier and Dagger at the ende of a Maisters prize. In doing which we know not vpon what Speeding points wee runne, for you (that are Readers) are the most desperate and fowlest players in the world, you will strike when a mans backe is toward you, and kill him (if you could for shame) when he lies vnder your feete. You are able (if you haue the tokens of deadly Ignorance, and Boldnes at one time vpon you) to breede more infection on in Pauls Church-yard, then all the bodies that were buried there in the Plague-time, if they had beene left still aboue ground. You stand somtimes at a Stationers stal, looking scuruily (like Mules champing vpon Thistles) on the face of a new Bookebee it neuer so worthy: and goe (as il fauouredly) mewing away: But what get you by it? The Booke-seller euer after when you passe by, pinnes on your backes the badge of fooles to make you be laught to scorne, or of sillie Carpers to make you be pittied: Conradus Gesner neuer writ of the nature of such strange beasts as you are: for where as we call you Lectores, Readers, you turne your selues into Lictores, Executioners, and tormenters. I wold not haue him that writes better than I, to Reade this, nor him that cannot doe so well, to Raile, or if hee cannot chuse but Raile, let him doe it to my face: otherwise (to me being absent) it is done cowardly: for Leonem mortuum mordent etiam Catuli: Cats dare scratch Lions by the face when they lie dead, and none but Colliers will threaten a Lord Maior when they are farre enough from the Cittie. I haue laide no blockes in thy way: if thou findest Strawes, (vade, vale, ) caue ne titubes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
