Thousands of women, aged 19 to 70, have shared their most intimate and sexual emotional stories. Sex is everywhere, yet we rarely discuss our own intimate experiences. Even our lovers often don't know our secret histories or desires - until now. Australian women believe that an active sex life is vital to their sense of wellbeing, but we still see sex as something that's a bit dirty, a bit naughty, a bit embarrassing. We rarely compare notes about what we do in the bedroom. Who knows if their behaviour, physical responses and emotions is something we have in common with our friends and neighbours? Joan Sauers created a forum in which Australian women could share their darkest secrets, their desires, fears and furtive dreams and speak their minds about sex and sexuality. The anonymous online survey attracted nearly two thousand responses, from women of all ages, living in every state and territory in the country. They were straight, bi and lesbian; single, dating, married, divorced and widowed; childless women, mothers and grandmothers. This is a book for anyone interested in sexual behaviour and attitudes - men as well as women - and a book for women who don't always feel comfortable talking to their friends or sisters or mums about a subject that matters so much to all of us.

First published in 1997, this study reports on a study of 221 sex workers in Queensland, Australia. The workers were interviewed by an interviewer with experience in the industry. They were asked a variety of questions relating to how they came to enter the industry, their knowledge of and attitudes towards safe sex, and a variety of other questions to do with lifestyle, service use and sexual health, and contact with the police and legal system. Sex work emerges as an activity which has a number of advantages. The pay is good, the hours are short and the work enables the worker to meet some interesting people and engage in social activities. Unlike other occupations, entry into sex work is somewhat haphazard (few appearing to plan entry to this industry as a career path) but, once in the industry many find it has benefits as well as disadvantages. Primary amongst these latter are the risks of acquiring a sexually transmitted disease (AIDS being uppermost in their minds) or the fear of violence which is associated with the context in which services are provided. In addition, sex workers often manifest a lifestyle which includes substance use and abuse. Relationships with police are often problematic and many workers report experiences which are critical of the legal system. This book provides a broad insight into the industry which, for parts of Australia, is subjected to substantial change. Such insights contribute not only to our understanding of the industry itself but also to the kind of health promoting activities which need to be initiated.

In 2017, a survey showed zero per cent of young Australian women would consider entering politics. Zero. In a time when we critically need women in our parliament, and in a country that was an early leader in women's political participation, there is a perception that women and politics don't mix. Shocking incidents have exposed the sexism that women in politics face from opposition, the media, the public, even their own colleagues. And those headlines only tell half the story. In this book, Kate Ellis tells the sometimes enraging, often funny and incredibly honest full story of women in Australian politics today. As well as sharing the experiences of her own fifteen years in parliament, Kate has spoken to politicians from across Australia's political spectrum, including former Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Julia Bishop, Penny Wong, Sarah Hanson Young and Pauline Hanson.

This book is both a detailed study of criminal acts involving Australian women since 1880 and a feminist analysis of their social and political significance. Based on previously unpublished archival documents, including court reports, coroners' reports, and those of prisons and child welfare organizations, Allen's findings show that infanticide, prostitution, and sexual and other assaults nvolving women have been much more prevalent than generally believed. Contending that this lack of official attention is due to the crimes' connection with the sexual relationships between men and women, Allen demonstrates that such a false perception of their incidence has disguised their significance in the processes of social change that have occured over the last century. This study will be of particular value for courses in women's studies, criminology, and the sociology of law and of gender.

This report explores young women's experiences of gender inequality and sexism in Australia, and their ideas on how it could be addressed. 600 girls and young women aged 15-19 were surveyed between December 2015 and February 2016 regarding their experiences and perceptions of safety, discrimination and inequality - at home, at school, in their relationships, in the work place, and in the digital environment - as well as decision making and pressure in sexual relationships, access to sexual health information and resources, and disclosing and reporting sexual assault. Comparisons are made with similar surveys carried out in Nicaragua, Ecuador, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe. In this Australian survey, 9 out of 10 respondents said they are not treated equally to boys, and 5 out of 6 believed that they are not given the same chances in life to get ahead as boys.
