Excerpt from The Sexes Throughout Nature In this faith, I offer the public these. Somewhat fragmentary papers; believing that they contain the germs of a new scientific estimate of feminine nature, from its earliest dawning in the plant up to devel 0ped womanhood in all its present complexity. They are probably faulty in many things, and may be proved to be wrong even on some very important points. The work is printed as it was written - ih snatches - not because the writer would escape the labor of systematic revision, but from the con viction that it will be more acceptable to the general reader in its present form. There are occasional repetitions, but, it is believed that each presents the subject in some new phase. The discussions are brief. Many other facts might be given, and many additional points brought forward in evidence of the main positions. But perhaps the book is quite long enough as it is. Excerpt from Bi-Sexual Man, or Evolution of the Sexes Is it right? Not in what is, but in what ought tobe, do we find an infallible guide; not in shift ing, erratic Experience, but in immutable Rea son. In reason we find the key to past and ln ture' for all history is reason either lived or not lived. When reason is not lived, we find degen eracy: when reason is lived, we find regeneracy. Natural and unnatural selection, if you will. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Excerpt from The Unveiling of Woman's Original Nature I must ask the public to be tolerant of me if I should have quoted any authors without giving them full credit. I don't hardly think that is possible; still, as I am not familiar with the works of all authors, there is a remote possibility that it may be the case. Another thing I wish to say is that so far as I know I am the first one that has come out in the open and boldly stated that the double standard of morality, and regarding sex as impure, is the cause of syphilis. But if any one else has ever made that statement before me, I am more than willing to give them full credit, for my only intention in stating it was to make the fact known; and if any one discovered it ahead of me, so much the better.
