Celibacies written by Benjamin Kahan and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-25 with Literary Criticism categories.

In this innovative study, Benjamin Kahan traces the elusive history of modern celibacy. Arguing that celibacy is a distinct sexuality with its own practices and pleasures, Kahan shows it to be much more than the renunciation of sex or a cover for homosexuality. Celibacies focuses on a diverse group of authors, social activists, and artists, spanning from the suffragettes to Henry James, and from the Harlem Renaissance's Father Divine to Andy Warhol. This array of figures reveals the many varieties of celibacy that have until now escaped scholars of literary modernism and sexuality. Ultimately, this book wrests the discussion of celibacy and sexual restraint away from social and religious conservatism, resituating celibacy within a history of political protest and artistic experimentation. Celibacies offers an entirely new perspective on this little-understood sexual identity and initiates a profound reconsideration of the nature and constitution of sexuality.

The happiness of all human beings, men and women, depends largely on their rational solution of the sexual problem. Sex and the part it plays in human life cannot be ignored. In the case of animals sex plays a simpler and less complex rôle. It is a purely natural and instinctive function whose underlying purpose is the perpetuation of the species. It is not complicated by the many incidental phenomena which result, in man's case, from psychologic, economic, moral and religious causes. Climate, social conditions, individual modes of life and work, alcohol, wealth and poverty, and other factors affect sexual activity in human beings. Sexual love, which is practically unknown to the animals, is a special development of the sex urge in the human soul. The deeper purpose of the sex function in human beings, likewise, is procreation, the reproduction of species. The average man, woman and child should know the essential sex facts in order to be able to deal with the sex problems of life. Of late years...

"'There's a lot of stigma attached to sex. Particularly with women, you have a big dichotomy between: Do you have sex? Do you not? Do you be a slut? Do you be a virgin? Do you be a prude? Do you be a man-whore? You can't really win.'" "" ""Women are always being told how to be sexy, but are rarely asked what actually turns them on. Wendy Jones wanted to find out, so she interviewed twenty-four women from all walks of life, including a burlesque dancer, a girl guide leader, a shop assistant, a ninety-four year old who remembers the sexual freedom of the war, a transexual, a nun, a feminist into BDSM, a covered Muslim, a mother, a student, a polyamorist, and a sexual healer. The women talked about their lives, bodies, sexual fantasies and relationships, about what they've learned, how they have been hurt, what they enjoy and what they long for. The interviews are frank, engaging, and surprising. Each woman is unique but together they speak for a majority, and it's time we listened. This honest and inspiring exploration of female desire will change the way we think and talk about sex forever. "'English women have a reputation for being reserved and uptight; actually behind closed doors we're outrageous.'"

Is there a particular English attitude to sex? What makes it? Is it good? Is it bad? How has it changed? And what of the future? When it comes to our sexual instincts, much more than in any other field of human activity, the importance of our psychological heritage is paramount. This book suggests that there is both confusion and constraint, aggravated by grey skies and a rapidly developing multiracial society - compounded by an uneven historical, cultural, religious and educational background.Richard Goodall reviews English sexual trends from the 17th century to the first decade of the third millennium, citing the most recent statistical data. The reader will be surprised by some of his conclusions.

Sexual Life In Sweden written by Hans Zetterberg and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-14 with Social Science categories.

Now available in English, Sexual Life in Sweden is a classic piece of sex research by one of Sweden's most distinguished social scientists. Sponsored by the Royal Commission on Sex Education more than thirty years ago, it remains the only study of sexual behavior in a randomly selected adult population sample ever funded by a government. Because an astonishing response rate was achieved (91 percent) during the course of Zetterberg's research, the claim that Sweden is one of the few countries where generalizations about national sexual behavior can be made may be stated with confidence. Zetterberg's study matches the gender of interviewers to that of subjects. From a theoretical perspective, Zetterberg analyzes the change in Sweden from a "restrictive" to a "contraceptive" society. The study makes it clear that, with over 1,000 acts of intercourse for every live birth, 90 percent of sexual activity between consenting adults in modern Sweden does not result simply for procreation. Nevertheless, the research yields a picture of a highly responsible society. Zetterberg explores the emergence of two powerful new norms: "when having sex, you must use contraception," and "when in an existing sexual relationship, you must not start another one." He also examines the issue of abortion as part of a concept of social justice. The author compares the behavior of those who experience an unwanted pregnancy with those who do not, and explains that abortion is seen by Swedes as part of the provision of the welfare and social justice system. Included is an examination of the sexual behavior of young people-the age of their first sexual experience, the circumstances surrounding it, whether positive parental involvement in their children's lives has any influence on their sexual conduct, and sex education programs in the schools. This translation of Zetterberg's study has been prepared by British sociologist Graham Fennell, who also authored a new introduction positioning Zetterberg's work in the history of sex research and comparing its findings with contemporary studies in Scandinavia, Western Europe, and North America. In light of the ongoing controversies about sex education, its conclusions remain relevant to policy discussions today
