In the past twenty years the study of Sparta has come of age. Images prevalent earlier in the 20th century, of Spartans as hearty good fellows or scarlet-cloaked automata, have been superseded by more complex scholarly reactions. As interest has grown in the self-images projected by this most secretive of Greek cities, increasing attention has focused on how individual Greek writers from other states reacted to information, or disinformation about Sparta. The studies in this volume provide new insights into the traditional historians' question, "What actually happened at Sparta?". But the implications of the work go far beyond Laconia. They concern preoccupations of some of the most studied of Greek writers, and help towards an understanding of how Athenians defined the achievment, or the failure, of their own city.

The standard image of Sparta is of an egalitarian, military society which disdained material possessions. Yet property and wealth played a critical role in her history. Classical Sparta's success rested upon a compromise between rich and poor citizens. Economic differences were masked by a uniform lifestyle and a communal sharing of resources. Over time, however, increasing inequalities led to a plutocratic society and to the decline of Spartan power. Using an innovative combination of historical, archaeological and sociological methods, Stephen Hodkinson challenges traditional views of Sparta's isolation from general Greek culture. This volume is the first major monograph-length discussion of a subject on which the author is recognised as the leading international authority.

I have come here to gaze upon the imperishable light. I have traveled far and wide, but never have I looked forward to seeing the light of the hot springs with such glowing anticipation, until now. I wish to look at it with the eyes of a dying historian, and then to feel the touch of the healing waters. I am beyond healing, that much I know for certain. But I wish to lay my eyes on the springs that cure all wounds and ailments. I long for these waters to bridge the gap inside me, the hole of not knowing where true, immortal glory resides. I wish for these waters to soothe an inner wound, one that festers with the knowledge of leaving history's most elusive mystery unplumbed. I am now making my way to these waters in order to feel history unfold as never before. They are known as "the hot springs," but they are far more than meets the eye. Within moments, I drift upon the sight of these restless waters in blissful silence. I look down at the vapors rising, and then the view of the thermal springs fills me with a secret warmth. I feel as though a god has descended and blessed me with the act of witnessing the splendor of his celestial stride. The hot springs breathe before me, churning out the mystery of their unparalleled vitality. Then I become frozen, my limbs slackening in a single moment. Undiluted shadows rise from behind me. A slight paralysis overtakes me as shadowy figures emerge. Armies entire burst forth upon the once-quiet scene. I look to my left and see armies of men rush forth in soundless unison. The shape of these warriors move as clouds dispersing slowly along a peaceful sky. The Spartans moved in silence as their unmatched glory unravels in a spectacular slowness. I have fathered history for as long as the treasured light lay half-dormant in this place, the most precious cradle the world has ever known. History unfolds before my eyes. The Spartan king is a shadow that rises and solidifies with the sound of oblivion tumbling. For a moment, his gaze falls upon me. His eyes then rest upon the timeless thermal springs. I am dying. I reach out toward the waters as my paralysis begins to wane. I wish to feel the power of these healing waters. But then the shadow of the Spartan king gives way to a shape fully formed and embraced by a splendorous light. Then my eyes witness the thermal waters moving in reverse. The Spartan king casts one last look at the healing waters before withdrawing back into history. The shadows retreat, and then another shape emerges. This time, the springs have taken my mind to the moment when the demigod places stones along the Lion's Wall. The demigod rises and looks at me. History is my child, but I must let it go. I have always held my child close to me, but now a larger shadow appears and sweeps over me. I have fathered this child for many years, but now the child must become a man. I see my child being swept into large, majestic shadows. My child becomes a warrior whose inner strength is untethered, allowing himself to partake in the bold striving of those who propel him forward. The demigod moves along with this new, fierce warrior. And then the shadow of the Spartan king reemerges. My hand reaches for the healing waters. And then I can feel the shadow of the Spartan king moving upon the soothing waters. The shadow consumes me. Many have died here, but never could I have realized that the healing waters were such a splendid sight. The hot springs consume me, ethereally pleasing to the touch. My inner wound is healed. The world's most precious wonder reveals unveils its secrecy to me and me alone, until others emerge and glimpse it for themselves. I am now witnessing the stream of events that have become inextricably bound to this place. I see men building the East, West and Middle Gate. I see men dying while passing through the gates.

In a dreamlike vision, Herakles sees Leonidas and the Spartans fight a dark army at Thermopylae. He learns that his purpose is to protect the hot gates, where warriors will sacrifice their lives for freedom. "Herakles stands before the flaming gates, his eyes pools of moon unblinking in the lastly receding dark. His eyes glitter with ferocious curiosity, but then with eager expectation. As the gates burn, Herakles watches as a shadow emerges from them. The shadow moves toward him as the night fails to quash the daylight's revolt. The morning sun raises his mind's barren symmetry aloft, which then sharpens immeasurably like sunlight through a desert haze. The shadow carves through the now-dull exterior of an empire. It cuts through defenseless corners, blotting out the light of remorseless suns. The carved empire becomes a flaming, emblazoned design, a map telling the demigod where he must go. Herakles sees what he must do now. The sun leaves an imprint on his mind like the hot gates at night. Herakles turns and leaves the mountain pass.

The study of the Spartans is now pursued more widely and intensively than ever. Indeed, no longer is Sparta the 'second city' of ancient Greece. This volume, the fourth in the established series on which Powell and Hodkinson have collaborated, breaks fresh ground, not least in the range of its contributors. The authors of the fourteen new papers represent nine different countries and demonstrate many of the fertile modern approaches to the history, the archaeology - and the still-influential image - of the city on the Eurotas.

Xenophon has for long, and understandably, enjoyed a privileged position as a reliable source on Sparta. Commander of a grand military expedition of Sparta's devising, and a dependent of Sparta's influential king Agesilaos, Xenophon knew Sparta from the inside, and - as himself an Athenian in exile - was well placed to comment on Sparta's difference. The simplicity of his Greek style has a perfume of honesty. And yet... Recent research has with increasing force called into doubt Xenophon's motives and truthfulness - especially as regards Sparta. Analysis of his Hellenica reveals much evasion and euphemism about Sparta's failings - complicated by occasional outbursts against the iniquity of Spartan imperialism. His euphemistic Constitution of the Lakedaimonians (itself containing such an outburst), and his near-hagiography of the dead Agesilaos, have variously evoked trust and suspicion in historians. This book, by a distinguished team of specialists in Spartan history, is the first of a short series from CPW, approaching Spartan reality by way of close analysis of our main contemporary Greek sources: their access, their biases, the literary structure and the genre of their works.

Spartan Women written by Sarah B. Pomeroy and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-07-11 with History categories.

This is the first book-length examination of Spartan women, covering over a thousand years in the history of women from both the elite and lower classes. Classicist Sarah B. Pomeroy comprehensively analyzes ancient texts and archaeological evidence to construct the world of these elusive though much noticed females. Sparta has always posed a challenge to ancient historians because information about the society is relatively scarce. Most existing scholarship on Sparta concerns the military history of the city and its heavily male-dominated social structure--almost as if there were no women in Sparta. Yet perhaps the most famous of mythic Greek women, Menelaus' wife Helen, the cause of the Trojan War, was herself a Spartan. Written by one of the leading authorities on women in antiquity, Spartan Women reconstructs the lives and the world of Sparta's women, including how their status changed over time and how they held on to their surprising autonomy. Proceeding through the archaic, classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods, Spartan Women includes discussions of education, family life, reproduction, religion, and athletics.
