Excerpt from The Shadow of the Angel Having been written during the pressing duties of a large parish, and with no thought of their appearance in the present form, they are sent forth with no expectation of literary recognition, but with the simple hope that they may bear some measure of comfort to such hearts as are pleased to receive them. Excerpt from The Angel and the Demon: A Tale of Modern Spiritualism The title at first chosen for this book was "The Young Governess;" but the one it now bears more clearly expresses its scope and meaning. The author regards Modern Spiritualism, as it is called, as a phase of Demonology, using the word in its bad sense; and classes it with witchcraft, necromancy, and like disorderly influences. So believing, he has written from that stand-point in the case. There will, of course, be plenty to reject his view, - to be angry and to denounce. But wiser ones will approve, and many, ho trusts, be warned in time to escape the sad consequences which are sure to follow any enthralment of the will made free by God. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. "The Angel" by Guy Thorne is an attempt to impress upon readers the fact that we are, without doubt, surrounded on our way through life by unseen presences and intelligence, which guard or attack that real portion of us that is ourselves--the soul. Through its hero, Joesph, the story is thought-provoking and explores the foundations upon which Christianity bases many of its pillars.

Excerpt from Life of Reginald Pole The Life of Reginald Cardinal Pole would have been written by the Rev. Ethelred Taunton, had not an untimely death struck him down at the beginning of his task - leaving the world poorer for those who had the happiness of his friendship. After waiting to see if some worthier pen would take up the interrupted work, I ventured upon it, encouraged by the kindness of Father Taunton's literary executor, who was good enough to entrust his notes and data to me. These, collected with exhaustive research and care from the archives and printed books in England, were of invaluable assistance, and a sure guide to further research in Rome and other places in Italy. This is the extent of my obligation, which I gratefully acknowledge: for the book itself I am entirely responsible, and from a few of the notes, and especially from some of the statements in Taunton's brilliant study. The Life of Wolsey, his views on one or two important points appeared to be unsupported by the facts, and against the weight of the evidence: conclusions which his own further researches would doubtless have led him to modify. The first Life of Pole, written in Italian by his friend and Secretary, Ludovico Beccatelli, Archbishop of Ragusa, was published at Venice in 1563, and a Latin translation with a few minor additions by Andreas Dudith, who had accompanied the Cardinal to England, appeared shortly afterwards. An interesting English version was published in England in 1686 during the short reign of James II, entitled Some Observations upon the Life of Reginaldus Polus, Cardinal of the Royal Bloud of England. Sent in a Pacquet out of Wales by G. L. [G. Lyde], Gentleman and Servant to the late Majesty of Henrietta Maria of Bourbon, mother to the present King.
