"Most of the following essays reveal my interest in the significance of literary forms--both the short literary forms in the Gospels, such as pronouncement stories, and an entire Gospel as a formed narrative. I am interested in the significance of these forms, not just in literary classification systems . . . . I am interested in literary form as a clue to how the text may engage hearers and readers--impact their thought and life--if they are sensitive respondents. The Gospel stories have been shaped in ways that give them particular potentials for significant engagement. Study of literary form can help us recognize these potentials." --from the Introduction Contents Part I: Gospel Sayings and Stories 1 Tension in Synoptic Sayings and Stories 2 The Pronouncement Story and Its Types 3 Varieties of Synoptic Pronouncement Stories 4 Types and Functions of Apophthegms in the Synoptic Gospels 5 The Gospels and Narrative Literature 6 "You Shall Be Complete"--If Your Love Includes All (Matthew 5:48) Part II: The Gospel of Mark 7 The Disciples in Mark: The Function of a Narrative Role 8 The Gospel of Mark as Narrative Christology 9 Reading It Whole: The Function of Mark 8:34-35 in Mark's Story Part III: Paul's Gospel 10 Paul as Liberator and Oppressor: Evaluating Diverse Views of 1 Corinthians 11 Participation in Christ: A Central Theme in Pauline Soteriology

This study is an introduction to Catholic theology designed both for the theological student and for the general reader willing to make a certain effort. After introducing the idea of theology adn the virtues desirable in the budding theologian, the bulk of the book falls intro the five sections: (1) the tole of philosophy in theology; (2) the use of the Bible in theology; (3) the resources of tradition, liturgy and sacred art; Fathers, Councils and Creeds; the sense of the faithful; (4) two 'aids to discernment in short history of Catholic theology from the New Testament to the present day. The conclusion considers the features of pluralism and unity which should typify Catholic theology as a whole and suggests how unity may avoid becoming uniformity without pluralism becoming anarchy.

How can one live an authentically Christian life? Although many books and articles delineate the content of the Gospel message, the form or shape of an existence based on faith has not been studied as thoroughly. To use a language correctly, it is not enough to know the vocabulary; one must have a good grasp of its grammar. This book attempts to deepen our knowledge of the grammar of the Christian life starting from the notion of metanoia. Generally translated as “repentance” or “conversion,” the word has in fact a much richer significance: it describes a total reorientation and transformation of our being, never accomplished once and for all, through the action of the Spirit of the risen Christ. Metanoia takes us out of our self-centered outlook and our limited and self-interested actions and brings us into God’s today, where we become witnesses to a real Presence, that of the universal Body of Christ.
