For those whose roots grow deep in cotton soil, a legacy calls you back. The dirt whispers a name, echoing from a time when all that existed in the world happened right outside your door. Many a boy and girl have moved on from the small farm towns that nurtured them. Others, like old Mis Hartmann, have lived over ninety years in the same county. Her years are distinguished by the size of the crop, the cost of cotton seed, and the number of levy breaks along the Mississippi. Marina Hartmann, has been seasoned like the hardwood forests of Big Lake.

In facing life's challenges, Georgia realized that her greatest test was her response to them. As she the "Rose" struggled to survive among the thorns- through a series of events; she is reminded by her Creator-- that every trial and adversity are part of His purpose for her life. Her testimony begins as a young girl "" in a large family- lost and depressed (with hearing problems) followed by an unforgettable disappointment that resulted in brokenness and hopelessness. Driven from home by a lost future, she confronted and survived the temptations of a strange city, only to return and face further tests that threatened her uncertain future. Faith driven, Georgia is reconciled with her Creator, who met her in the Deep Woods of Mississippi as a child, and confirmed His love, that "I am still with you." Her committed, devoted journey enabled her to leave a resilient, visionary legacy that we can overcome and believe the impossible. The choice is ours!!

This is set in the rural part of America in the 1960s. A great deal of African Americans were still in the South, picking cotton, chopping cotton, and working on plantations. Little did we know that in the 1960s, there was an industrial revolution not only in the north with the steel mills, stockyards, constructions, and in others, like domestic jobs in the home, hotels, and for drivers in all aspects of transportation. Every Sunday morning, African Americans would attend church, all day long in most situations because that was a tradition that was taking place in the South during the sharecropping days and slavery days. I found out that a great deal of churches provided financial support and education for the laughs because Americans were sharecroppers. African Americans, with their best Sunday clothes on, headed to the church to thank God for another week. Traditions such as gold traditions were maintained by the shoppers and also African American landholders and owners as well. There was also a great deal of landowners doing shopping. At this time, they did not have as much property as plantation owners. But they were lying on this, and they had so much pride in what they did in their work. These basic and general values for African Americans on Sundays is very powerful. Let us look forward to the next book that will discuss what happened after 1965 once the sharecropper grandson enters the Chicago metropolitan area after being gone for seven years and see his views and understanding of returning back from the rule of Mississippi to the Uptown Chicago. Lets see what changes in opportunity that will be taken advantage of and the disadvantages that he will experience. This is my view. This is my love for the book White Gold Cotton and Sharecroppers Stories. Charles Watkins lll, author of the book

This paperback facsimile edition restores to print Howard Kester's Revolt among the Sharecroppers, a lost classic of southern radicalism. First published in 1936, Kester's brief, stirring book provides a dramatic eyewitness account of the origins of the Southern Tenant Farmers' Union (STFU), the Arkansas Delta sharecroppers' organization whose cause was championed by religious radicals and socialists during the 1930s. Accompanying Kester's original text is a substantial new introductory essay by historian Alex Lichtenstein. This edition will introduce general readers, scholars, and students to a social movement with significant historical implications. In its commitment to interracialism, the STFU challenged long-standing southern traditions. In its hostility to the agricultural recovery programs of the 1930s (which tended to benefit landowners at the expense of tenant farmers), the union offered an early critique of New Deal liberalism. And, finally, in its insistence that the dispossessed could assume control of their own destiny, the STFU foreshadowed the progressive social movements of the 1960s. Thus, Revolt among the Sharecroppers is an important primary document that makes a signal contribution to our understanding of southern history, labor history, African American history, and the history of Depression-era America. Kester's text recounts the early history of the STFU and its criticisms of the New Deal in compelling, accessible prose. Lichtenstein's introduction offers biographical background on Kester, explores the religious and socialist beliefs that led him to work with the STFU, describes the racial and social climate that shaped the union's emergence, places the union'srise and decline within the context of 1930s politics, and outlines the legacy of this remarkable organization.

In 1917, there is no escape from the tight grasp of the Mississippi delta, especially for a black young man. As James Hayes grows up tilling the soil with his disabled father and younger brother, all he can think about is how badly he wants out. Lured by stories of the Great Migration north, he dreams of the day when he will be able to leave and make his mark on the world. Finally on one October morning, eighteen-year-old James gets his chance. When he is drafted and sent to France at the height of the Argonne Offensive by Germany, James becomes embroiled in the thick of battle, eventually standing out from other soldiers by winning the French Croix de Guerre. As the conflict ends in 1918, he ventures to Paris where he is invited to sing at a local bistro. Soon, he becomes a sensation, settles in his adopted country, and marries a local woman. But when he is called home to be near his terminally ill father, fate rises up to meet him and changes everything once again. In this tale of hope and perseverance, a black World War I draftee from the Mississippi delta journeys from the trenches of the Western Front to 1920s Paris and back home again.

The author presents a powerful story of courage throughout her early life as the daughter of a poor sharecropper in the Arkansas Delta in the nineteen forties and fifties. She describes a heartbreakingly difficult childhood and adolescence which produced in her a deep well of steadfast grit while sharing in the hot, backbreaking work of harvesting a yearly cotton crop to supply food and clothing for the family. Throughout it all, her silent struggle to obtain an education is Herculean. You will laugh at the ironies of her daily life on the farm, then cry as challenges are presented that no child should ever endure. Her story also details the history of a chilling murder of a family member that resulted in a tragic massacre of black sharecroppers during her parents' generation. Later, as a naïve young wife and mother, she describes her 37-year marriage and subsequent divorce. Looking back at her life's early circumstances, the author thankfully credits them as having instilled the survival skills she later used to build a successful life out of a tenuous beginning.
