A Stage for Debate presents a detailed analysis of the repertoire of the leading German-language stage of the nineteenth century, Vienna’s Burgtheater. The book explores the extent to which the Burgtheater repertoire contributed to important political and cultural debates on individual liberty, the role of women in society, and the understanding of national and regional identity. The relevance of the Burgtheater as a forum for political debate is assessed not by the degree to which the performed plays transgressed established norms, but by the range of positions that were voiced on a given topic. Martin Wagner investigates the roughly 1,000 plays from across Europe that were introduced to the Burgtheater’s repertoire between 1814 and 1867 by combining a general overview with detailed interpretations of especially successful plays. Wagner reveals that the Burgtheater was significantly more involved in contemporary debates than the stereotype of this stage as an artistically refined but apolitical institution suggests. Drawing from theatre studies and German and Austrian studies more broadly, A Stage for Debate revises the history of one of Europe’s leading theatres.

Goethe written by Matthew Bell and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-09-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

A new intellectual biography of Goethe, examining the paradox of his thought Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832) was a poet, a novelist, a scientist and an essayist on a dizzying range of topics. In the nineteenth century, he was widely regarded as one of the most important thinkers of modern Europe. In this important and ambitious work, Matthew Bell offers a wide-ranging intellectual biography of Goethe, tracing the evolution of his thought and reassessing its value. Bell examines the full spectrum of Goethe’s writing, from his most well-known works, including the dramatic poem Faust and the novels Wilhelm Meister and The Sorrows of Young Werther, to lesser-known essays and reviews. Throughout, Bell draws on Goethe’s letters and diaries, most of which are stll only available in German, embedding Goethe’s thought in his lived experience and in the cultural and intellectual life of Europe from the 1750s to the 1830s. Bell presents new interpretations of Goethe’s work as one of the first evolutionary biologists, describing discoveries that anticipated Darwin’s, and of his political ideas, which pervade his literary work in ways that have not been fully recognized. Bell offers an original and illuminating explanation for the paradox of Goethe’s thought, exploring how a radical individualist who espoused liberal and innovative ideas in some areas—in particular, religion, sexuality and science—could remain consistently conservative and authoritarian in his political outlook. Rereading Goethe through this new lens, Bell shows, reveals new dimensions of work we thought we knew well.

Exposing The Reich written by David Harper and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-15 with History categories.

As a WWII tour director for thirty-five years, David Harper has repeatedly heard the same questions from an extremely varied American and British audience: “Why did the Germans vote for Hitler? Did they know about the concentration camps? What did German soldiers and members of the SS feel about the extermination camps and the war crimes they were committing? How do today’s Germans view Hitler and the Third Reich? What is the country doing at present to address those dark pages of its history and to remember the victims of Hitler’s regime? Do the right-wing demonstrations in Germany portend a resurgence of Nazi ideology today?” All these questions and many more are addressed in Exposing the Reich. The book seeks to promote an understanding of how the devastation and tragedy of the war and the concurrent genocide could happen. It studies the lethal blend of inciting hatred, ongoing indoctrination, justification for drastic action, and the complete control of all media. How many people know, for instance, that Hitler was writing an opera when he lived in Vienna or how he developed his antisemitic outlook while living there? Few know about the early political and ideological influences on Hitler’s worldview, such as those instigated by his little-known mentor, Eckart. Who has ever heard about Hitler’s “second book,” in which he revealed his major foreign policy plans, a manuscript that remained secret? How many realize that Hitler’s regime planned on replacing Christianity with its own “religion” and substituting Mein Kampf for the Bible? Why did Hitler name his regime the “Third” Reich, and why did he choose the swastika as its logo? Why did the fine arts enjoy such an honored status during the Reich? What were the lesser-known original purposes of the concentration camp system established in Germany just weeks after Hitler seized power? Who realizes that, just prior to Hitler seizing power, the Jewish population in Germany was a mere 0.7%? These, and countless more insights regarding the Third Reich, are revealed in Exposing the Reich. From young students to well-informed history buffs, readers will gain a wealth of new insights into Hitler and his regime of terror.

Darwin’s idea has been called the best idea anyone ever had. In Interrogations of Evolutionism in German Literature 1859-2011 Nicholas Saul offers the first representative account of German literary responses to Darwinian evolutionism from Raabe and Jensen via Ernst Jünger and Botho Strauß to Dietmar Dath. Often identified with National Socialist ideology and hence notably absent from the public sphere after 1945, Darwinian thought is in fact shown to be distorted though the lens of Social Darwinism and bionationalist organicism. As Nicholas Saul shows, literature has been the main agent in public discourse for challenging such illiberal presentations, and there is a common thread of salvific individualism which leads to the new legitimacy of Darwinian discourse today.
