Rockslides and Rock Avalanches of Central Asia: Distribution, Impacts, and Hazard Assessment arms scientists with an inclusive and specialized reference for future studies of large-scale bedrock landslides in Central Asia, a phenomenon that poses a major threat to local communities, infrastructure and industrial facilities. The book covers the Dzungaria, Tien Shan, and Pamir mountain systems that are characterized by arid climates and scarce forestation, and is an ideal reference for scientists searching for data that accurately summarizes bedrock landslides through the analyses of a multitude of case studies that have applications in comparable, global scenarios. Through its relatively low precipitation and good preservation of minor geomorphic features, particularly those formed by past landslides, this region provides opportunities for detailed study of the internal structure of landslide bodies. Summarizes the present-day knowledge of bedrock landslide distribution in the Dzungaria, Tien Shan and Pamir mountains Describes case studies illustrating both general characteristics of large bedrock landslides and other specific features, allowing comparative analysis of numerous case studies Presents the classification of bedrock landslides and related models based on deposits, morphology and internal structures that can be applied to global locations

This thesis examines relations between rock avalanches and the glaciers on which they are deposited. I have attempted to understand a geophysical phenomenon from two viewpoints: sedimentology and glaciology. The contributions are both methodological, and practical. I have used a GIS to quantify debris sheet geomorphology. A thorough characterization of rock avalanche debris is a necessary step in understanding the flow mechanics of large landslide. I have also developed a technique for solving radar interferometry phase unwrapping problems. A digital elevation model created using this technique is used to quantify the velocity of a glacier prior to its disturbance by landslides. Three debris sheets on Black Rapids Glacier, Alaska, have coarse blocky rims. Longitudinal flowbands in these debris sheets, as well as in a debris sheet deposited on Sherman Glacier, Alaska, separate bands of different block size. Elongated blocks are parallel to flow, except at the perimeter of the debris sheets, where they are aligned nearly perpendicular to flow. Blocks on Sherman Glacier have been reoriented by glacier flow since the landslide in 1964. The matrix of all four debris sheets does not systematically change with depth or distance from the source. However, Sherman Glacier debris has become coarser due to weathering. Black Rapids Glacier surged in 1936-1937. Between 1949 and 1995, the glacier gradually returned to a pre-surge hypsometry. Maximum elevation changes along the glacier centerline in the ablation and accumulation areas, are, respectively, -249 m (-5.4 m a-1) and +63 m (+1.4 m a-1). Centerline thickening of +62 m (+1.4 m a-1), just above the Loket tributary in the upper part of the ablation zone, indicates dynamic thickening following the surge. The response of Black Rapids Glacier to the rock avalanches is spatially and temporally complex. Increases in measured and modelled surface velocity across the debris sheets are much greater than velocities observed higher on the glacier. The velocity recorded at the downglacier margin of the debris doubled between 2002 and 2004, resulting in a reversed velocity gradient. The changes in ice dynamics are related to the landslides through the effect of debris insulation on mass balance.

Developments in Geotechnical Engineering, Vol. 14A: Rockslides and Avalanches, 1: Natural Phenomena focuses on attempts to provide a foundation for studies of mass movement phenomena in the Western Hemisphere. The selection first elaborates on Albert Heim's observations on landslides and relevance to modern interpretations, Frank rockslide in Alberta, Canada, and Lower Gros Ventre slide in Wyoming, U.S.A. Discussions focus on geologic environment, events triggered by rise and fall of slide lake level, description of slide mass and zone of detachment, stability analysis, travel distance of sturzstrom deposits, and geometry of the Elm sturzstrom deposits. The publication then takes a look at Madison Canyon rockslide in Montana, U.S.A., Little Tahoma Peak rockfalls and avalanches in Mount Rainier, Washington, U.S.A., Sherman Glacier rock avalanche in Alaska, U.S.A., and Nevados Huascaran avalanches in Peru. Topics include rockslide kinematics, associated seismic activity, meteorological and hydrological conditions, mode of emplacement of other Alaskan rock avalanches, and applicability of mechanical fluidization to other rock avalanches. The text examines the mechanics of glacier movement, dynamics of snow avalanches, failure of snow slopes, and role of gravity in plate tectonics. The selection is a valuables reference for researchers wanting to study further rockslides and avalanches.

Climatic Geomorphology written by M. Gutierrez Elorza and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-29 with Science categories.

During the past few decades climatic geomorphology has been substantially enlarged in knowledge, thanks to numerous detailed investigations, the application of a large number of techniques, and the acquisition of abundant absolute dates. The challenge of predicting the effects of the prophesied future global warming on morphogenetic processes and landforms has encouraged geomorphologists to study the Late Pleistocene and Holocene climatic changes from the geomorphological and geological record. The advances achieved in the field of climatic geomorphology during the past years are reflected by the publication of several specific monographs about the different morphoclimatic zones. The aim of this book is to provide an up-to-date general view of this branch of geomorphology. It includes a chapter on applied geomorphology for each morphoclimatic zone providing an approximation of the main environmental problems. Geoscientists, geomorphologists
