SETTING The novel's events occur in three main locations, separated similarly to the book's structure. The most important events of the story in Part One take place primarily in Virginia, Washington, DC, and the surrounding areas. The events in Part Two take place in Somerset, Pennsylvania (near Pittsburgh) and a few remote areas nearby. In Part Three, events take place in Atlanta, Georgia with some events occurring in North Carolina. While there is some deviation from this, Fitzsimmons focuses the major events of each section in these locations. STORY PLOT ANALYSIS The plot focuses on the efforts of Gibson Vaughn and a team of investigators to determine what happened when Suzanne Lombard disappeared ten years ago. As the story of their investigation unfolds, intricately connected sub-plots emerge providing the reader with a complex plot that is still easy to follow. As each layer of the plot is added, the reader is charged with keeping track of more characters, more information, and more connections. But Fitzsimmons tells the tale with clarity allowing the reader to remain engaged without losing sight of the action. The greatest tension arises from the fact that no character is quite who they seem to be and none of the characters can be completely trusted in at least some way.
