Excerpt from The Sidereal Messenger, or Monthly Review of Astronomy, 1887, Vol. 6 During the past ten or fifteen years, a great amount of ma terial has been collected towards a complete gravitational survey of the earth, by the work of lieut.-col. Herschel in India, and of the officers of the Coast Survey in this country and elsewhere. And a very important part of it has consisted in connecting the older work with the new, by Peirce's opera tions in Europe, and those of Herschel in this country. At the same time it has become increasingly evident that very little is now to be gained by endeavoring to find a Sphe roid fitting the earth's actual form more closely. It will be best simply to adopt some standard (say that of Clarke, but it makes very little difference what), and to investigate hereafter the local deviations from it. These deviations seem to be larg er and more extensive than used to be supposed, the station errors in latitude and longitude being at least quantities of the same order as the variations of elevation. Excerpt from The Sidereal Messenger, 1885, Vol. 4: A Monthly Review of Astronomy The neglect with which that branch of astronomy - the nebulae - has been treated, has been for many years, somewhat painfully apparent to me, though there are many reasons therefor. In the first place but very few persons possess suf ficient interest in this subject to arouse any popular eu thusiasm, and as telescopes of the largest size are necesse ry to see them at all, except a few of the brightest, astron omers have, to a very great extent, devoted their time 'and instruments to the more fascinating and, perhaps, more useful subjects of double-stars, the Moon, the Sun, etc. During the many years devoted to comet-seeking, I have invariably marked on one of my star-charts the position of every nebula revealed by my comet-seeker, (a 4%-in(3h re fractor). This habit has saved me many hours of anxious watching to detect motion in a nebulous object found, which, at the time of finding, I could not determine whether it were a nebula or a comet. Excerpt from The Sidereal Messenger, 1890, Vol. 9: A Monthly Review of Astronomy Maria Mitchell was born on the island of Nantucket Aug. 1, 1818. Her father and mother were both Quakers, and her mother was descended from the earliest settlers of the island. Her father had a natural taste for scientific study, and throughout his active life, first as teacher and after wards as bank cashier, he devoted his leisure time to astro nomical pursuits. He was for many years employed by the United States Coast Survey in observations pertaining to the survey of the island. In these observations his daughter began to assist him at the early age of eleven. Her educa tion was the best Nantucket could afford, of a thoroughly substantial but simple character. It gave her only the rudi ments of the science, and the mathematics which her later studies required. When eighteen years old she became libra rian of the Athenaeum library, an excellent library well sup plied with scientific books, and attesting the intellectual character of the Quaker town. In the reading room of this library Miss Mitchell, by her private reading, laid the foun dations of her mathematical knowledge. Throughout these years she continued her father's assistant, and gradually passed to independent observations. She swept for comets on the roof of the Pacific bank, still heading the main street of Nantucket. She found several before their discovery was known to her, and in the mean time was training herself by her studv for the investigation of the positions she obtained. She computed several orbits from her own observations. But not until 1847 did she sweep her glass over that partie ular comet which brought her to the notice of the public. Excerpt from The Sidereal Messenger, or Monthly Review of Astronomy, 1888, Vol. 7 At kleistshohe, about an hour from Frankfurt on the Oder, were stationed Dr. Lachmann from the observatory of Breslau, Mr. Pechule from Copenhagen, Prof. Tietjen from Berlin, and Dr. Neugebauer from Breslau. As the eclipse was hidden by the clouds, their observations weret limited to noting that at the time of totality the northern horizon, to an altitude of about half a degree assumed a deep red tint, and the darkness became so intense that lanterns were required in order to see to read. At Kolmar, in Posen, Dr. Korber from the Breslau Observ atory, and Prof. Reimann from Hirschberg, were stationed. Although the sky was covered by clouds, an attempt was made to record the times of third and fourth contact bv noting the sudden changes in the light at the beginning and end of totality; and from these changes Dr. Korber con cluded that the middle of the eclipse occurred within a second or two of 5h 19m 22s A. M., Breslau mean time. During totality there remained a red streak in the northern horizon, but the gloom was so deep that it was impossible to read the face of a watch without artificial light.
