Excerpt from The Siege of Kumassi N writing an account of the siege of Kumassi, in which my husband and I found ourselves involved very shortly after our arrival there, and of the events which immediately preceded and followed it, and in which I had a share, I have been actuated by a desire to place on record, while the facts are clearly in my mind, an experience which may be of value to those who keep them selves in touch with events of interest in outlying portions of our empire. It has been my aim to state everything as I saw it, without embellish ment, and while it is possible that some may think that here and there I have expressed opinions which are too candid, I can only say that they are opinions which I hold. I have thought that a slight sketch of the social life of the Gold Coast would also be acceptable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXIII SERVANTS AND NATIVE LETTERS WHEN one goes for the first time to West Africa, and realises that there are no women servants, and that all the household work is in the hands of men, or "boys," as they are called, one naturally imagines all sorts of disadvantages, and that it will never be possible to get along at all. But I never found it so in practice. The boys are very respectful and anxious to learn, and I was soon accustomed to having them about me. They are as handy as women servants, and are to be trusted in looking after your clothes and keeping everything in order. They are very faithful and, I am sure, serve you to the best of their ability; often, however, they fail you at a critical moment, not because they mean to do so, but because anything out of the ordinary run upsets them, and they lose their heads. Another great disadvantage to them is that most of them do not understand English, and often pretend to have understood what you have said, and go straightway and do the very reverse! As a rule, your house-servants are natives: they are always known as "boys," never as servants, but we had a Kroo boy who was with us for eight years, and worked his way up to head house boy. He was a very superior young fellow, being the son of one of the chiefs of a town on the Kroo coast. He and I were the greatest friends, and I am sure he would have done anything for me, except give up getting into debt. This was a very favourite pastime with him, and when he was in great straits he would come and throw himself upon my mercy to help him from being arrested by his creditors. He used always to be very busy in my bedroom whenever he had anything of a disagreeable nature to unfold, and would begin a long story of how badly he had...

Excerpt from With Kitchener to Khartum Angered now himself, Mohammed Ahmed joined a new teacher and became a straiter ascetic than ever. The fame Of his sanctity Spread, and adherents flocked to him. He saw that the people of the Sudan, smart ing under extortion and Oppression, could but too easily be roused against the Egyptian Government: he risked all, and proclaimed himself El Mahdi cl Muntazer, the Expected Guide, the Mussulman Messiah. The governor-general at Khartum sent two companies to arrest him: the Mahdi's followers fell on them unawares and destroyed them. More troops were sent; the Mahdists destroyed them: next came a small army, and again the Mahdists destroyed it. The barbarous tribesmen flocked to the Mahdi's standard, and in September 1882 he laid siege to El Obeid, the chief city of Kordofan. His assault was beaten back with great slaughter, but after five months' Siege the town surrendered sack and massacre taught doubters what they had to expect. Excerpt from The Book of Famous Sieges It is only in modern times that history has come to be anything more than a story of wars carried on between either rulers or peoples. In old times warfare was endless. Every people knew that its lives and its property were safe only so long as they could defend themselves from enemies that had no scruple to prevent them from killing or robbing all foreigners. The art of making war or of defending a country against its enemies, therefore, was more important than any other study. Success in war was the only path to greatness and the price paid for safety in the possession of land or property. When a people was overcome, its men were slain, its women and children carried into slavery, its homes destroyed or occupied by the conquerors, while its wealth became the plunder of its enemies. In this state of the world, every town was necessarily a fortress ever ready for attack; and the people living in it were the garrison who expected to defend it whenever enemies appeared.
