The Siege of Kumassi is a gripping account of the 1896 British expedition to Ashanti, led by Frederick Hodgson, governor of the Gold Coast colony. Written by his wife, Mary Alice Young Hodgson, this book provides a firsthand perspective on the brutal campaign to capture the capital of the Ashanti empire. With vivid descriptions of battles, cultural differences, and personal sacrifices, The Siege of Kumassi offers a fascinating glimpse into a little-known chapter of colonial history. Excerpt from The Siege of Kumassi N writing an account of the siege of Kumassi, in which my husband and I found ourselves involved very shortly after our arrival there, and of the events which immediately preceded and followed it, and in which I had a share, I have been actuated by a desire to place on record, while the facts are clearly in my mind, an experience which may be of value to those who keep them selves in touch with events of interest in outlying portions of our empire. It has been my aim to state everything as I saw it, without embellish ment, and while it is possible that some may think that here and there I have expressed opinions which are too candid, I can only say that they are opinions which I hold. I have thought that a slight sketch of the social life of the Gold Coast would also be acceptable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1901 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXIII SERVANTS AND NATIVE LETTERS WHEN one goes for the first time to West Africa, and realises that there are no women servants, and that all the household work is in the hands of men, or "boys," as they are called, one naturally imagines all sorts of disadvantages, and that it will never be possible to get along at all. But I never found it so in practice. The boys are very respectful and anxious to learn, and I was soon accustomed to having them about me. They are as handy as women servants, and are to be trusted in looking after your clothes and keeping everything in order. They are very faithful and, I am sure, serve you to the best of their ability; often, however, they fail you at a critical moment, not because they mean to do so, but because anything out of the ordinary run upsets them, and they lose their heads. Another great disadvantage to them is that most of them do not understand English, and often pretend to have understood what you have said, and go straightway and do the very reverse! As a rule, your house-servants are natives: they are always known as "boys," never as servants, but we had a Kroo boy who was with us for eight years, and worked his way up to head house boy. He was a very superior young fellow, being the son of one of the chiefs of a town on the Kroo coast. He and I were the greatest friends, and I am sure he would have done anything for me, except give up getting into debt. This was a very favourite pastime with him, and when he was in great straits he would come and throw himself upon my mercy to help him from being arrested by his creditors. He used always to be very busy in my bedroom whenever he had anything of a disagreeable nature to unfold, and would begin a long story of how badly he had...

Honour In African History written by John Iliffe and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.

This is the first published account of the role played by ideas of honour in African history from the fourteenth century to the present day. It argues that appreciation of these ideas is essential to an understanding of past and present African behaviour. Before European conquest, many African men cultivated heroic honour, others admired the civic virtues of the patriarchal householder, and women honoured one another for industry, endurance, and devotion to their families. These values both conflicted and blended with Islamic and Christian teachings. Colonial conquest fragmented heroic cultures, but inherited ideas of honour found new expression in regimental loyalty, respectability, professionalism, working-class masculinity, the changing gender relationships of the colonial order, and the nationalist movements which overthrew that order. Today, the same inherited notions obstruct democracy, inspire resistance to tyranny, and motivate the defence of dignity in the face of AIDS.
