With the capture and complete destruction of this stronghold by the Spaniards was sounded the knell of the Eeformation in the southern states of the Netherlands, just as the fall of La Eochelle, a few years later (1628), marked the annihilation of the Huguenots as a great military party in France.2 Both were maritime cities and relied for their defence on the assistance of friendly fleets; but, whilst that of the Dutch never failed Ostend, the English fleets sent to La Eochelle accomplished little or nothing. Both were besieged by a cardinal, but while Richelieu was more of a politician than a religious devotee, Archduke Albert would not permit any but Catholics to settle in Ostend after its recapture. It was finally taken by the Marquis Ambrogio Spinola, and this so thoroughly established his military reputation that Eichelieu begged him to inspect his approaches before La Eochelle. The latter was defended, as was Leyden in 1574, by its brave mayor and its citizens only. Within its walls were no persons of quality, if we except the aged mother of the Duke of Eohan; but Ostend was ever full of English knights, French gentilshommes and Dutch jonkheers, and was considered by the young noblemen of the period a capital school for war. Physicians, and surgeons especially, also found it a good school. That famous siege has been so admirably described by J Motto of the Province of Zealand. 2 The rising of the CamisardE in 1702 was localised in one district. Motley in his 'United Netherlands, ' and more recently and partially by Mr. Clements E. Markham in 'The Fighting Veres, ' that it may seem presumptuous to ask the English public to...

Drama. Translated from the French by David Willinger. Michel de Ghelderode (1898-1962) was a Belgian playwright who is ranked by many as a key member of the international avant-garde, on par with Beckett, Brecht, Ionesco, Genet and Pinter. Writing most of his plays between 1918 and 1937, he wasn't discovered in Europe until after World War II, where he was hailed as the "Belgian Shakespeare," and in America until the 1960's. Both discoveries led to great, though still cult level, popularity. In the early 60's not a week went by without a production of one of Ghelderode's plays happening somewhere in the United States. This unique volume includes three plays--The Siege of Ostend, The Actor Makes His Exit and Transfiguration in the Circus--in their first-ever English translation.

English Warfare 1511-1642 chronicles and analyses military operations from the reign of Henry VIII to the outbreak of the Civil War. The Tudor and Stuart periods laid the foundations of modern English military power. Henry VIII's expeditions, the Elizabethan contest with Catholic Europe, and the subsequent commitment of English troops to the Protestant cause by James I and Charles I, constituted a sustained military experience that shaped English armies for subsequent generations. Drawing largely from manuscript sources, English Warfare 1511-1642 includes coverage of: *the military adventures of Henry VIII in France, Scotland and Ireland *Elizabeth I's interventions on the continent after 1572, and how arms were perfected *conflict in Ireland *the production and use of artillery *the development of logistics *early Stuart military actions and the descent into civil war. English Warfare 1511-1642 demolishes the myth of an inexpert English military prior to the upheavals of the 1640s.

After the famous 'Battle of Nieuwpoort' in West Flanders in 1600, another feat of arms was to follow in the same area: the Siege of Ostend, which lasted from 1601 to 1604. Maurits was, yet again, to play the leading role and, despite the fact that the outcome was less of a success for the young Republic of the Seven United Netherlands than the battle of Nieuwpoort had been, the result was a Spanish conquest of a city of total devastation and, by then, wholly depopulated. Nevertheless a considerable impression had been made upon the Northern Netherlands. The most weird and wonderful machines of war had been tested, whilst a variety of new military siege techniques had been brought into play. There was even talk of 'the University of Ostend', with the implication that, from a military perspective, the siege was a very instructive experience. Many, too, were the rumours and the garbled tales that began to circulate soon after the end of the affair. One example was the legend of the soldier in the Spanish army who appeared to be a woman. In this book, Dr. Simoni provides a detailed and stimulating account of the manner of, and the form by which the tales of these shocking occurrences arose soon after the events of the siege had been set down, and immediately went into print after the details had reached the North. These reports were to leave such a lasting impression in the Republic, that 'Ostend' became one of the most well known feats of arms in the penultimate stages of the struggle for freedom from Spain. The book is, thus, a brilliant example of the received history of one of the most controversial events of the Eighty Years War. The role of the Leiden printer and publisher, Hendrick van Haestens, stands central to 'the Ostend Story'. He provides accounts of the fighting in no less than three publications. Dr. Simoni, in this study, reaches the conclusion that Haestens' reports are deserving of a more important place than they have found thus far. It is mainly to him that we owe the provision of a clear and lively picture of the famous siege.

The Oxford Handbook Of The Age Of Shakespeare written by R. Malcolm Smuts and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-30 with Literary Criticism categories.

The Oxford Handbook of the Age of Shakespeare presents a broad sampling of current historical scholarship on the period of Shakespeare's career that will assist and stimulate scholars of his poems and plays. Rather than merely attempting to summarize the historical 'background' to Shakespeare, individual chapters seek to exemplify a wide variety of perspectives and methodologies currently used in historical research on the early modern period that can inform close analysis of literature. Different sections examine political history at both the national and local levels; relationships between intellectual culture and the early modern political imagination; relevant aspects of religious and social history; and facets of the histories of architecture, the visual arts and music. Topics treated include the emergence of an early modern 'public sphere' and its relationship to drama during Shakespeare's lifetime; the role of historical narratives in shaping the period's views on the workings of politics; attitudes about the role of emotion in social life; cultures of honour and shame and the rituals and literary forms through which they found expression; crime and murder; and visual expressions of ideas of moral disorder and natural monstrosity, in printed images as well as garden architecture.
