FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY TRANSLATOR GEOFFREY W. BROMILEY: Helmut Thielicke "has a vivid awareness of the actual needs of actual people living in this age of supreme storm and stress. He sees how the biblical message, how Jesus Christ Himself as the living message, answers powerfully and sufficiently to these needs. He appreciates that faith in Him is not an easy thing, and yet that true faith carries us to victory even in doubt, anxiety, distress and the terrors of conflict and destruction. He attains almost an apocalyptic stature in his depiction of our shattered world and in his proclamation of the message of God's salvation and judgements within it. Here are sermons to put into the hands of contemporaries who suffer from the fears and anxieties which Thielicke so graphically describes but who do not yet perceive the true meaning and relevance of what God did for man in the giving of His only Son. Here are sermons from which to learn how the old Gospel, first given in a very different world, may come with all the living comfort and the regenerative force of truth and reality to our own age too, made relevant by the Holy Spirit on the lips of the sensitive and dedicated preacher."

Silence written by Diarmaid MacCulloch and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-04 with Religion categories.

Diarmaid MacCulloch, acknowledged master of the big picture in Christian history, unravels a polyphony of silences from the history of Christianity and beyond. He considers the surprisingly mixed attitudes of Judaism to silence, Jewish and Christian borrowings from Greek explorations of the divine, and the silences which were a feature of Jesus's brief ministry and witness. Besides prayer and mystical contemplation, there are shame and evasion; careless and purposeful forgetting. Many deliberate silences are revealed: the forgetting of histories which were not useful to later Church authorities (such as the leadership roles of women among the first Christians), or the constant problems which Christianity has faced in dealing honestly with sexuality. Behind all this is the silence of God; and in a deeply personal final chapter, MacCulloch brings a message of optimism for those who still seek God beyond the clamorous noise of over-confident certainties.

God's silence during the passion is certainly a silence towards man, but in particular God was silent towards Christ in his perfect and complete humanity. It is also the silence of the Father towards the Son . . . At first sight this silence is troubling and perhaps shocking, suggesting that God is in fact absent. However, the author invites us to go beyond this first impression--and the silence turns out to be of tremendous richness, overwhelming depth, and surprising beauty. We are invited to refocus our attention and discover what the Father is saying in a completely new way. These pages sing with love for God, and our meditation of the passion narratives draws us into deep contemplation of the One they celebrate, the Crucified.

This is a book for every Christian whose desire is to be close to Jesus, every Christian who wants to understand why Christ seems to be silent in their life. Have you ever felt abandoned by God? Have you ever felt God had abandoned you to suffer alone? Have you ever cried to God without receiving any answer? Do you feel that Christ is ignoring your prayers and your problems? This work has given an extensive explanation on the silence of Christ. The disciples asked Jesus, "Lord, do you not care?" Mark 4:38. This book is giving hope for every Christian especially when we feel abandoned by Christ. In this book, I have pointed out that the silence of Christ in your problems, is not the absence of Christ in your life. Hence, faith is what attracts the attention of Jesus in your life. The book has three Chapters. In Chapter one, I have discussed the meaning and the origin of suffering. In this chapter I have identified three types of human suffering, namely; merited suffering, unmerited suffering and suffering caused by natural disasters. I have also discussed in detail the value of suffering. I have shown that the suffering of Christ teaches us that love can arise from evil. The value of suffering reminds us that it is neither necessary nor desirable to eliminate human suffering to pursue a flourishing life. We should aim to show that the proper responses to human suffering are actually the best pathway to a flourishing human life. Learning and growing from difficulties is a vital pathway to a flourishing human life. Furthermore, as I was reflecting on the value of suffering, I have realized that the value of suffering is that it builds in us a sense of shared humanity by joining with other suffering people. All the suffering you have gone through as an individual, should help you to help other people going through the same problems. In Chapter two, I have extensively discussed the silence of Christ in people`s problems. I have given examples on how people feel Christ has abandoned them and is ignoring their prayers. Often when you`re praying about something, instead of receiving the answer right away, your prayers are met with silence. God seem not to be answering your prayers. In Chapter three, I have shown that the silence of Jesus in your problems, is not the absence of Jesus in your life. I have used Mark 4:35-41 as the main reference because it gives us deep insights into the meaning of the silence of Christ and the role of our faith in inviting Jesus into our lives. I have pointed out that Jesus always comes to us in the storms of life, "when you pass through the waters, I will be with you," Isaiah 43:2. The purpose of the storm was to help the disciples grow in faith. He`s equally with you in your boat and storms of life. Just invite him like the disciples.

Although it is never made explicit in the text, when we read the Gospels as story, we can picture a Jesus who, for most of the time, walked through life in unhurried peace and calmness. So unrushed was he that two people in need of his healing died because he would not allow himself to be dictated to by circumstances. God received greater glory through Jesus, later raising both Lazarus and Jairus’s daughter from the dead. But in a busy world full of need, poverty, and sickness, Jesus walked through first-century Israel with apparent ease. He desires us to live in the same way. But how do we do that in a demanding and stressful, modern world? How did Jesus manage it? Much of the answer lies in Jesus’s personal prayer life and his relationship to the Father. In these pages, join the author in his long quest to follow Jesus into that most intimate of relationships to experience something of the “unforced rhythms of grace” (Matt 11:28–30, MSG) and the deep love of the Father.

When God Is Silent shows you how to trust God even when He seems unresponsive and remote — even when, as in the famous incident in the Gospels, He seems to sleep while you are buffeted by the storms of life. Author Luis Martinez quotes that beautiful line from the Song of Songs — “I sleep, but my heart is awake” — and confirms that with Jesus this is indeed the case: His love for you never sleeps, no matter what. Martinez shows how you can make better sense of your life once you realize that God has actually been closest to you when He seemed farthest away; and once you learn why He often speaks to you only in silence. Best of all, Martinez teaches you the secret of true happiness, which you can achieve even amid the troubles that are inescapable elements of every human life. With sober realism and simple faith, this book will show you how to discover — and then to take refuge in — the comfort our Lord offers you, even when He seems to sleep. “A powerful masterpiece. A great gem of Catholic spirituality.” Fr. Benedict Groeschel Author, Arise from Darkness “Anyone who wants to progress in prayer or who seeks to get past blockages in spiritual growth will find graceful help here.” Bert Ghezzi Author, Getting Free “In the silence of Christ’s sleep, we can learn the silence of charity, cultivate the silence of discretion, experience the interior silence of contemplation, and so find peace.” Donna Steichen Author, Prodigal Daughters Learn to get through the times when God seems distant, as you discover: Silence: why it’s essential for all real gr0wth in the spiritual lifeWhy Jesus must seem to sleep in order to refine your love and purify your soulJesus’ thirty “hidden years”: the important lessons they hold for your life todayWhy worry? The Silence of God (1897) has become a classic on the subject of why God has not directly intervened in the affairs of men for the past two thousand years. Here's how Anderson puts the question he addresses: "And to not a few this volume may be welcome as affording a clue to pressing difficulties which perplex and distress the thoughtful. Infidelity trades upon the silence of Heaven, the inaction of the Supreme. If there be a God, almighty and all-good, why does He not use His power and give proof of His goodness in the way men choose to expect of Him? The answer usually offered by the Christian apologist fails either to silence the opponent or to satisfy the believer. And rightly so, for it is lacking not only in cogency but in sympathy. The God of the Bible is infinite both in power and in compassion; and in other ages His people had public proof of this. Why, then, is He so silent?"
