The Facebook friend request glares back at Jaclyn Friedman. It is the face of her childhood abuser. She holds her breath as she looks at how age has sculpted his face with an unfamiliar texture. Nightmares rush to the surface. Adrenalin strikes her heart at full force. His eyes pierce her soul through the screen with the same fearful message she suffered as a child. Be silent or your family will die. Twenty-three years ago she believed him to be dead. Now, he's invaded her carefully constructed life. The shameful secret she has carried alone all these years now threatens to become deadly. Breaking the silence could be the only way for Jaclyn and her family to escape alive. The Silent Sound of Darkness is a compelling look at the impact of childhood abuse and the deadliness of the silence that too often follows.

Rethinking Darkness written by Nick Dunn and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-28 with Science categories.

This book examines the concept of darkness through a range of cultures, histories, practices and experiences. It engages with darkness beyond its binary positioning against light to advance a critical understanding of the ways in which darkness can be experienced, practised and conceptualised. Humans have fundamental relationships with light and dark that shape their regular social patterns and rhythms, enabling them to make sense of the world. This book ‘throws light’ on the neglect of these social patterns to emphasize how the diverse values, meanings and influences of darkness have been rarely considered. It also examines the history of our relationship with the dark and highlights how normative attitudes towards it have emerged, while also emphasising its cultural complexity by considering a contemporary range of alternative experiences and practices. Challenging notions of darkness as negative, as the antithesis of illumination and enlightenment, this book explores the rich potential of darkness to stimulate our senses and deepen our understandings of different spaces, cultural experiences and creative engagements. Offering a rich exploration of an emergent field of study across the social sciences and humanities, this book will be useful for academics and students of cultural and media studies, design, geography, history, sociology and theatre who seek to investigate the creative, cultural and social dimensions of darkness.

The population is on earth like a matchbox, Prepared to be used in turning on and off, Those that are broken are thrown away so that they do not get in the way, We lose the focus of living in nature due to obligations, In the dream of life a constant journey is born, A hug of colors wraps you in its mantle, Smiling images are reflected in memories, It is the eternal union creating the bond of return, Fluorescent stars shine with aromas, The dance of the universe always keeps traces, Renewal watches with peace in his spirit, When you wake up from the trip, new life will be born

Sound Poetics written by Seán Street and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-14 with Social Science categories.

This book examines sonic signals as something both heard internally and externally, through imagination, memory and direct response. In doing so it explores how the mind 'makes' sound through experience, as it interprets codes on the written page, and creates an internal leitmotif that then interacts with new sounds made through an aural partnership with the external world, chosen and involuntary exposure to music and sound messages, both friendly and antagonistic to the identity of the self. It creates an argument for sound as an underlying force that links us to the world we inhabit, an essential part of being in the same primal sense as the calls of birds and other inhabitants of a shared earth. Street argues that sound as a poetic force is part of who we are, linked to our visualisation and sense of the world, as idea and presence within us. This incredibly interdisciplinary book will be of great interest to scholars of radio, sound, media and literature as well as philosophy and psychology.

A Place Of Darkness written by Kendall R. Phillips and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-01 with Performing Arts categories.

Horror is one of the most enduringly popular genres in cinema. The term “horror film” was coined in 1931 between the premiere of Dracula and the release of Frankenstein, but monsters, ghosts, demons, and supernatural and horrific themes have been popular with American audiences since the emergence of novelty kinematographic attractions in the late 1890s. A Place of Darkness illuminates the prehistory of the horror genre by tracing the way horrific elements and stories were portrayed in films prior to the introduction of the term “horror film.” Using a rhetorical approach that examines not only early films but also the promotional materials for them and critical responses to them, Kendall R. Phillips argues that the portrayal of horrific elements was enmeshed in broader social tensions around the emergence of American identity and, in turn, American cinema. He shows how early cinema linked monsters, ghosts, witches, and magicians with Old World superstitions and beliefs, in contrast to an American way of thinking that was pragmatic, reasonable, scientific, and progressive. Throughout the teens and twenties, Phillips finds, supernatural elements were almost always explained away as some hysterical mistake, humorous prank, or nefarious plot. The Great Depression of the 1930s, however, constituted a substantial upheaval in the system of American certainty and opened a space for the reemergence of Old World gothic within American popular discourse in the form of the horror genre, which has terrified and thrilled fans ever since.
