This I emphatically wish my readers to bear in mind before perusing the comparative remarks upon the manufactures of the various countries hereinafter mentioned; but in attempting to express my views on the subject, I am actuated solely by two motives: - Firstly, to persuade my readers at least to give the English manufacturer a fair chance of competition, and not to allow any prejudice which may exist in their minds to bias their judgment to everything either wholly or partially of home manufacture, simply because it is of British, and not of foreign make. Excerpt from The Silk Industry of the United Kingdom: Its Origin and Development It was originally intended that this work should be entitled "The History of the Silk Industry of the United Kingdom," and it was believed that quite a small volume would suffice to contain all the information procurable, but enquiries begun in the early months of the year 1911 have resulted in establishing the fact that the Silk Industry was at one time and in one form or another carried on in a very wide area and at places hitherto unsuspected of having had any connection with it. Seeking, as was natural, in the early days of its development localities which provide water power and a supply of cheap labour, the industry became scattered, and it has remained so ever since. How far this disintegration and consequent lack of cohesion and unity of effort, political, economical, technical and educational, has led to the decline of the industry in this country it is impossible to estimate, but it is undoubtedly a source of weakness, whether judged relatively to the prosperity of silk workers in other countries or to those engaged in the other branches of the textile industry in Great Britain and Ireland. It is not the object of this work to attempt to prove that our past or present fiscal policy has been either the salvation or the ruin of the silk industry in this country. These are not merely the motifs of the Realist genre but reveal a complex polysemy. Utilizing a metonymic examination of these tropes, this volume exposes the dramatic structural and socio-economic upheaval generated by industrialization, urbanization and the widening sphere of empire. The material evidence testifies to the technological and production innovations evolving diachronically for the period, and the evolution of Manchester as the industrial ‘Cottonpolis’ that clothed the world by the 1840s. This volume analyses Gaskell’s manipulation of the materiality, arguing its firm roots lie in the quotidian of women’s domestic and provincial life within the growing ranks of the middle classes. Exploring Gaskell’s tactile imagination, an embodied relationship with fabrics and sewing, a function of her daily life from an early age, this volume provides insight into the sensory aspects of cloth and its ability to stir affective responses, emotions and memories, whereby worn fabrics and even the absence of previous textile treasures, is poignant, recreating layers of recollection.
