Similarly, people with high, as compared to low, self-esteem were hypothesized to exhibit a greater liking-similarity effect because perceiving similarity with likable targets maximizes balance for people who hold a similarly positive attitude about their own self - worth. Study 3 confirmed these hypotheses. Next, I manipulated participants\U+2019\ preference for consistency (Study 4) and self - esteem (Study 5) to ident ify the potential causal relationship these variables may have with the liking - similarity effect. In Study 4, participants\U+2019\ preference for consistency was manipulated by writing about the importance of consistency, inconsistency, or an unrelated value. In Study 5, participants\U+2019\ self - esteem was manipulated via inclusion or exclusion during a social game. Neither the preference for consistency nor self - esteem manipulation affected the liking - similarity effect. Participants in both studies, regardless of cond ition, continued to perceive greater similarity with likable, than dislikable, targets. Discussion focuses on the nature of the liking - similarity effect, its resistance to experimental manipulation, as well as possible implications for social cognition and behavior.

This paper highlights a logical contradiction in the currently accepted theory of choice. This contradiction occurs when a decision is reframed by adding a clone to the choice set. The current theory concludes that individuals have context-dependent preferences if they make consistent choices; it concludes that individuals have rational preferences if they systematically switch from one alternative to another. I argue that these are not the logical conclusions to draw from the data and that the currently accepted theory should be revised. Rational decision making assumes that individuals make consistent decisions and leads to the similarity effect. Luce's IIA implies that adding a clone to the choice set makes an alternative more preferable, which is a framing effect.

The authors tested the hypothesis that the attitude similarity effect also spreads sequentially through the mediators of positive affect, respect, and inferred attraction to interpersonal attraction. In Experiment 1, participants received information about a partner's similar or dissimilar attitudes and reported only one of the three mediators before attraction. The similarity attraction link was mediated by positive affect or respect but more strongly by inferred attraction. In Experiment 2, the three mediators were measured in six different orders. Results falsified parallel and combined parallel-sequential multiple-mediator models and two of the fully sequential multiple-mediator models but supported four fully-sequential models that were consistent with the affect-centered and affect primacy hypotheses.

Past research has robustly shown that people like others when attitudes are shared, and dislike those who oppose their attitudes. Other research examining strength-related properties of attitudes has found, however, that not all attitudes predict behavior equally well. Little research has considered the role of these properties on attitude similarity and interpersonal attraction. Across two studies, I provide the first known investigation of whether one of these strength-related properties, attitudinal ambivalence, might moderate effects of attitude similarity on attraction. Ambivalence involves mixed positive and negative reactions toward an attitude object, leading an ambivalent attitude to be weaker than an attitude comprised primarily of positive or negative reactions. An attitude strength approach, then, would suggest that univalent attitudes ought to predict liking of a target based on the (un)shared attitude. However, the conflict of inconsistent reactions is distinctly uncomfortable, creating a motive to reduce the conflict. This motive might lead one to seek resources that could help resolve the ambivalence. In the first study, I provide evidence consistent with an attitude strength pattern, with ambivalent attitudes attenuating attitude-consistent target liking. In the second study, the attitude strength pattern is replicated, but only when prior knowledge is high and the target less able to provide unfamiliar information that could reduce the ambivalence. When prior knowledge is low and the target more capable of serving as an ambivalence reduction resource, ambivalent attitudes are more predictive of attraction.
