Language And Society written by Andrew Simpson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-02 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Language and Society is a broad introduction to the interaction of language and society, intended for undergraduate students majoring in any academic discipline. The book discusses the complex socio-political roles played by large, dominant languages around the world and how the growth of major national and official languages is threatening the continued existence of smaller, minority languages. As individuals adopt new ways of speaking, many languages are disappearing, others are evolving into hybrid languages with distinctive new forms, and even long-established languages are experiencing significant change, with young speakers creating novel expressions and innovative pronunciations. Making use of a wide range of case studies selected from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa, Andrew Simpson describes and explains key factors causing language variation and change which relate to societal structures and the expression of group and personal identity. The volume also examines how speakers' knowledge of language acts as an important force controlling access to education, advances in employment and the development of social status. Additional topics discussed in the volume focus on the global growth of English, gendered patterns of language use, and the influence of language on perception.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Englisch - Sonstiges, Note: 1,3, Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen (Englisches Seminar), Veranstaltung: Landeskunde: Britain and Europe, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The following essay will explore political and social satire in The Simpsons. This essay will prove Homer Simpson wrong saying in the episode “Mr. Lisa Goes to Washington”: “...cartoons don’t have any deep meaning. They are just stupid drawings that give you a cheap laugh”. In this essay it will be argued that The Simpsons provides us with an in-depth satirical reflection on U.S. society and, to a certain degree, on Western societies in general. Furthermore, this essay will examine the view of creator Matt Groening and the other writers of The Simpsons that the programme skilfully incorporates the subtext that “[t]he people in power don’t always have your best interest in mind” (Cantor 1999, p. 745). Armstrong (2005a, p. 11) emphasises in his article about “Satire as Critical Pedagogy” that satire is a vehicle through which political literacy will be developed and underlines that it is an important part of political education. Thus, the analysis of satire is a vital part of cultural studies and is accordingly examined in this essay.

Leaving Springfield written by John Alberti and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Drama categories.

Since its first appearance as a series of cartoon vignettes in 1987 and its debut as a weekly program in 1990, The Simpsons has had multiple, even contradictory, media identities. Although the show has featured biting political and social satire, which often proves fatal to mass public acceptance, The Simpsons entered fully into the mainstream, consistently earning high ratings from audiences and critics alike. Leaving Springfield addresses the success of The Simpsons as a corporate-manufactured show that openly and self-reflexively parodies the very consumer capitalism it simultaneously promotes. By exploring such topics as the impact of the show's satire on its diverse viewing public and the position of The Simpsons in sitcom and television animation history, the commentators develop insights into the ways parody intermixes with mass media to critique post modern society. In spite of the longevity and high cultural profile of the show, The Simpsons has so far attracted only scattered academic attention. Leaving Springfield will be of importance to both scholars of media and fans of the show interested in the function of satire in popular culture in general and television in particular.

Their immense popularity as well as the critic's esteem highlight The Simpsons' importance as pop-cultural phenomenon, and demand far-ranging scholarly attention. This book uses "The Simpsons" as an analytical media-matrix to discuss aspects of postmodernity. It features articles by Angela Meyer ("Lisa Simpson as the Voice of Double-Coded Critiques of Contemporary Society"), Benjamin Franz ("Vests, Monorails, 'Springs' and Kwik-E-Marts: Music as Political Discourse in The Simpsons"), John W. Heeren and Salvador Jimenez Murguia ("Faith And Laughter: A Postmodern View of Religion in The Simpsons"), Eric Pellerin ("The Simpsons and Television Self Reflexivity as Critique"), Martin Gloger ("No Homer-Society - Some Explorations on Springfield Capitalism"), Tom Zlabinger ("Listening to Yellow: Music and Musicians as Heard and Seen in The Simpsons"), Joseph H. Herrera ("Hmm... Abortions for Some, Miniature American Flags for Others" The Simpsons, Cultural Memory & the Unpaid Labor behind 'Oogle Goggles'") and Brett Jordan Schmoll ("Slashing The Simpsons: Apu, Lisa, and the Fictionalization of Academic Discourse")
