Carl Stumpf (1848-1936) was a German philosopher and psychologist and a visionary and important academic. During his lifetime, he ranked among the most prominent scientists of his time. Stumpf's intention, as evident in his book, Tone Psychology, was to investigate the phenomenon of tone sensation in order to understand the general psychic functions and processes underlying the perception of sound and music. It could be argued that modern music psychology has lost or perhaps ignored the epistemological basis that Carl Stumpf developed in his Tone Psychology. To gain a confident psychological basis, the relevance of Stumpf's deliberations on music psychology cannot be overestimated. Analyses of the essence of tones, complex tones and sounds are fundamental topics for general psychology and epistemology. By the end of this two-volume work, Stumpf had established an epistemology of hearing. The subject of Volume I is the sensation of successive single tones. Stumpf demonstrates that analysis leads to the realisation of a plurality (is there only one tone or are there several tones?), which is then followed by a comparison: an increase may be observed (one tone is higher than the other) or a similarity may be realised (both tones have the same pitch or the same loudness). With almost mathematical stringency, Stumpf developed a topology of tones. Volume II deals with the sensation of two simultaneous tones (musical intervals). The books are stimulating, rewarding and provocative and will appeal to music psychologists, music theorists, general psychologists, philosophers, epistemologists and neuroscientists.

This volume seeks to reevaluate the nature of tone-segment interactions in phonology. The contributions address, among other things, the following basic questions: what tone-segment interactions exist, and how can the facts be incorporated into phonological theory? What is the relation between diachrony and synchrony in relevant processes? Sound, tone, music, voice, and noise as forms of sonority through which our current economic and ecological crises can be understood. In this wide-ranging book, Frances Dyson examines the role of sound in the development of economic and ecological systems that are today in crisis. Connecting early theories of harmony, cosmology, and theological doctrine to contemporary media and governance, Dyson uses sound, tone, music, voice, and noise as forms of sonority through which the crises of “eco” can be read. The sonic environment, Dyson argues, is fundamental to both sense and sensibility, and its delimitation has contributed to the “senselessness” of a world now caught between spiraling debt and environmental degradation. "A series of judgment tests were conducted to investigate subjective judgments of single, modulated and multiple tones plus noise. The subjects were asked to judge which of two sounds, tones plus noise or noise alone, was noisier (or in some cases louder). Stimuli included both broadband and octave band noises together with single tones at 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000 Hz. Amplitude and frequency-modulated tones of 500 and 2000 Hz were also employed. Multiple tone stimuli included 2 and 5 tone complexes with overall frequency spacings of 1/10, 1/3, 1, 4/3 and 2 octaves. Analysis of the judgment results were made using calculated perceived noise level and pure tone correction procedures suggested both by Little, and by Kryter and Pearsons. In general, the pure tone corrections were necessary, the exception being situations in which the pure tone is added to an octave band of noise. In one test series; however, the pure tone adjustment appears to overcorrect in all conditions. The effect of the instruction set was marked. The addition of a pure tone to noise had less effect on judgments of loudness and more effect on judgments of noisiness. The average difference was 5 dB. Modulated tones showed little difference from those of unmodulated tones, except at low modulation rates which produced annoying beats. For multiple tones there appeared to be no difference in people's assessment of harmonic and non-harmonically related tone complexes. Although the noisiness increases somewhat with increase in number of tones, this effect does not require modification of the present pure tone correction methods."--Summary.
