The first volume of our new series, Fathers of the Church: Shorter Works, will be available in the summer of 2021. This series, to be printed only in paperback format, will offer English translations of treatises, homilies, poems, and letters of the Church Fathers in slim, easily affordable volumes. In this way a multitude of important writings will become accessible to scholars and students as well as the reading public. This is the first complete English translation of St. Gregory of Nyssa’s treatise On the Six Days of Creation (In Hexaemeron). It was probably written in 380-381, and is designed as both a defense and a critique of his recently deceased brother St. Basil’s better known homilies on the creation story as set out in the first chapter of Genesis. At the same time it incorporates Gregory’s own observations on the Genesis text, which reflect his desire to show the consistency between Scripture and the philosophy and natural science of his day A notable feature is Gregory’s presentation of God’s creation of the world as what has been called a “substantification” of God’s own will, creatio ex Deo rather than creatio ex nihilo. Other ideas of his seem interestingly to foreshadow those of modern science, notably his challenge to the idea that matter is a primary ontological category and his theory that the world as we know it developed through a process of “sequence” (akolouthia) from an originally simultaneous creation of everything. Gregory differs from Basil in maintaining that the “waters above the firmament” in Genesis 1 are spiritual rather than physical in nature. He uses a modified form of Aristotle’s theory of elements, together with some interesting observations on geography and meteorology, to construct a detailed and ingenious account of the “water cycle.” This description enables him to refute Basil’s notion that there needs to be an extra supply of physical water above the firmament so that the water lost from earthly seas and rivers through evaporation can be “topped up.”

On The Six Days Of Creation written by Robert Grosseteste and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Bible categories.

* The translation complements the highly acclaimed Latin text edition of the Hexaemeron by Dales and Gieben.Grosseteste is a crucially important figure in the history of English learning, representing the last flowering of a fully native tradition of scholarship. His Hexaemeron is rare amongst works of this period in giving such a wide and deep insight into the medieval world view.A work of Grosseteste's early maturity (probably completed around 1235) it is a commentary on the early chapters of Genesis, on the six days of Creation, and gives him a context for expounding his attitude to theology, to the world, and to the place of human beings in that world. It is a masterly compilation and reconciliation of conflicting Greek and Latin authorities, handled with great confidence, which gives a supremely rich account of the unity of medieval learning, where the study of God includes the study of the whole world.

Creation In Six Days written by James B. Jordan and has been published by Canon Press & Book Service this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Bible categories.

Creation in Six Days offers an exegetical, literary, and theological defense of the traditional interpretation of the Genesis account of six-day creation. Jordan's account is primarily designed to answer any approach to the text of Genesis, such as the increasingly popular Framework Hypothesis, that pits the text's literary features against its historical and narrative sense. Beyond his exegetical critique of several prominent positions, Jordan offers a constructive reading of the early parts of Genesis and also seeks to uncover the assumptions which attract people to the Framework Interpretation and similar views. The explanation, he says, lies in the acceptance of many of the questionable assumptions of modern science on the part of most Christians today, coupled with the pervasiveness of a gnostic or nonhistorical attitude toward the Christian faith.

In Six Days God Created written by Paulin Bedard and has been published by Xulon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-01 with Religion categories.

This book refutes the framework interpretation and other figurative interpretations of the days of creation and shows the majestic progression of God's work of creation in six literal days. The author enters into debate with renowned contemporary theologians and seeks to give exegetical and theological guidance to modern students, pastors, and church leaders amidst the present attractiveness of non literal interpretations of Genesis 1 and 2. Rev. Bedard's focused critique of the Framework Hypothesis and his vigorous defence of the plain meaning of Scripture deserves a wide reading. Heartily recommended! - Dr. Cornelis Van Dam (Professor Emeritus, Old Testament, Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary) Those who find themselves attracted to the Framework Hypothesis should read this book for its thorough, incisive, and cautionary critique of this theory and its potential consequences. - Dr. Jannes Smith (Professor of Old Testament, Canadian Reformed Theological Seminary) Paulin Bedard has done an admirable job of highlighting the dangers inherent in this insidious interpretation of the creation account. His extensive research demonstrates that those who embrace the Framework Hypothesis often are influenced by the 'apparent' scientific evidence for long ages in their reading of Genesis 1 and 2. Clearly presenting the presuppositions and refuting the arguments of those who promote these erroneous views, it is well worth a read. - Dr. Anco Farenhorst (DVM) Paulin Bedard has written an excellent refutation of figurative views of Genesis 1. He shows the necessity of maintaining the plain truth of God's Word, in face of current attacks on its credibility. I heartily recommend this book, particularly for Reformed (and other) theologians and students. - Dr. John Byl (Professor Emeritus, Mathematical Science, Trinity Western University) Rev. Bedard is a graduate of the Reformed Seminary in Aix-en-Provence, France. He is currently pastor of the Reformed Church of Saint-Georges, Quebec, Canada.
