Unveils the spiritual meaning that fueled the artistic, political, and social revolutions of the 1960s • Investigates the spiritual principles that informed everything from the civil rights and anti-war movements, to the hippies’ rejection of materialist culture, to the rise of feminism, gay rights, and environmentalism • Reveals how medieval troubadours, Gnosticism, Renaissance hermetic magic, and the occult doctrines of Aleister Crowley helped shape the psychedelic Sixties • Offers in-depth analysis of many of the era’s most famous books, films, and music No decade in modern history has generated more controversy and divisiveness than the tumultuous 1960s. For some, the ‘60s were an era of free love, drugs, and social revolution. For others, the Sixties were an ungodly rejection of all that was good and holy. Embarking on a profound search for the spiritual meaning behind the massive social upheavals of the 1960s, Tobias Churton turns a kaleidoscopic lens on religious and esoteric history, industry, science, philosophy, art, and social revolution to identify the meaning behind all these diverse movements. Engaging with views of mainstream historians, some of whom write off this pivotal decade as heralding an overall decline in moral values and respect for tradition, Churton examines the intricate network of spiritual forces at play in the era. He reveals spiritual principles that united the free love movement, the civil rights and anti-war movements, the hippies’ rejection of materialist culture, and the eventual rise of feminism, gay rights, and environmentalism. He traces influences from medieval troubadours, Gnosticism, Hindu philosophy, Renaissance hermetic magic, and the occult doctrines of Aleister Crowley. He also examines the psychedelic revolution, the genesis of popular interest in UFOs, and the psychological consequences of the Bomb and the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King. In addition, Churton investigates the huge shifts in consciousness reflected in the movies, music, art, and literature of the era--from Frank Sinatra to the Beatles, from I Love Lucy to Star Trek, from John Wayne to Midnight Cowboy--much of which still resonates with the youth of today. Taking the reader on a long strange trip from crew-cuts and Bermuda shorts to Hair and Woodstock, from liquor to psychedelics, from uncool to cool, and from matter to Soul, Churton shows how the spiritual values of the Sixties are now reemerging, with an astonishing influx of spiritual light, to once again awaken us.

Hail Holy Light written by Ken Mccormack and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-02-04 with Religion categories.

Hail, Holy Light is about the Great Awakening of the Sixties—about epiphanies that came like flashing lights from a train to millions of people. The threat of the atomic bomb and shocking discoveries about racism and the Vietnam War led a generation on a spiritual quest. This book explores not only historical events, but also interior realities—myth, the collective mind, psychology, spirituality and social change. It is also a memoir of the author's personal healing. During the Sixties McCormack immersed himself in the revolution's underlying implications, and he bears witness to the widespread struggle that turned out to be the birth pangs of a new world vision. As Hail, Holy Light takes you on a unique journey through grief, ecstasy and accomplishment, it explores the rising New Spirit that rescued many from the emptiness of the Fifties. The emerging unselfish willingness to suffer for the sake of others is enough to restore humanity. But the Holy Light also turns out to be the lasting and healing salvation of Christ. The Holy Light that worked its magic on the inner lives of protesters and revolutionaries eventually dragged McCormack from the brink of compulsive drinking and suicidal despair. It carried him into a sacred field near an old barn where some overwhelming force blew through him as through an open window. He then sees the entire decade as not merely about the death of public heroes, but about the spiritual rebirth of nameless millions such as he. Sitting quietly on a haystack he is crucified on the hardest journey of all—from the old self to the new. The era began when John F. Kennedy and his glamorous wife rode into the streets of Dallas on November 22, 1963. They carried with them the dreams of a nation. The tragic assassination, however, followed by political revelations helped shatter the vision Kennedy embodied—the romance of Camelot. But the rising subculture that suffered the painful abandonment was also teetering on the brink of The Third Great Awakening in American history. For them the death-day was to be a birthday. The seeds planted by JFK and Aldous Huxley—who died the same day—developed into a major highway leading to the 21st century. Huxley, the author and quiet sage, the book argues, modeled that journey far better than the flamboyant president. With regard to Huxley's goals of self-transcendence, personal empowerment, and greater compassion, the Sixties appears a resounding success. “An in-depth historical and philosophical examination of the era of two cultural icons, John F. Kennedy and Aldous Huxley, followed by an inspiring memoir of the spiritual transformation of the author coming out of the consciousness awakening of the Sixties. Highly recommended!” —Karen McKinnon, poet. Her most recent work, Set In Motion was published by The Wildflower Press in 2009 and is composed of poems, journal entries and letters. “McCormack's book is an unfolding revelation. He delivers the impossible: a coherent reading of the 1960s in America. Through a comparison of two contemporary lives, John F. Kennedy and Aldous Huxley, we are shown the myth that died in that violent decade and the spiritual promise born amid psychedelic colors. The book combines the bold history and vulnerable memoir that often make for the best conversation.” —The Rev. Charles Busch, M.A. (Philosophy) from Trinity University, and Master of Divinity from Harvard University, is the founder of Peace Village and Fields of Peace and is Ordained in the United Church of Christ.

Blood. Thick, red, still. I shivered in spite of the comfortable temperature in the room. Staring fixedly at the ooze, I watched the edges curl inward as if it were trying to remove itself from the white linoleum, embarrassed by its own unseemly appearance. Except for the blood, all was normal in the primate biology lab of Loma University. Situated in upscale San Larimor, the campus's property nestles in the rolling hills just northwest of Los Angeles renowned for stately Mediterranean style mansions and frequent celebrity sightings. San Larimor Police Detective, Cate Blaine becomes embroiled in a puzzle of blood, a missing security guard and a deadly chase against time. While searching for the answers to the case, Cate is searching for clues to solving her own inner battle dealing with the senseless loss of her son and husband. As she moves between the real world of crime and the inner chaos of her emotions, she is in jeopardy of loosing her job and her sanity. Thrown into an unwelcome partnership with LU's Private Security chief, Sloane Stevens, Cate fights the impulse to keep case details from the blue-eyed, ex-cop, when . . . The flashlight reflecting off the industrial plastic, made Stan's face and body just visible. Blank eyes stared back at us, a silent scream contorting his features. Sloane's involvement proves almost too much, as Cate races against time . . . murders and the possibility of her safety.

The Spirit of the Sixties explains how and why the personal became political when Sixties activists confronted the institutions of American postwar culture. The Spirit of the Sixties uses political personalism to explain how and why the personal became political when Sixties activists confronted the institutions of American postwar culture. After establishing its origins in the Catholic Worker movement, the Beat generation, the civil rights movement, and Ban-the-Bomb protests, James Farrell demonstrates the impact of personalism on Sixties radicalism. Students, antiwar activists and counterculturalists all used personalist perspectives in the "here and now revolution" of the decade. These perspectives also persisted in American politics after the Sixties. Exploring the Sixties not just as history but as current affairs, Farrell revisits the perennial questions of human purpose and cultural practice contested in the decade.

Break On Through To The Other Side written by Marty Berry and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-09 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Marty Berry's autobiography contains forty true stories that add up to a life unlike any other. His account of the Sixties is an outrageous adventure, of extreme highs and lows. The journey toward it is a mind-blowing, brazen adventure of subversion and suspense that rivals any Hollywood thriller. It is told in a straightforward and unapologetic voice by the one who survived it and was transformed through it. The brevity and fast-moving action of each story contributes to the overall dynamic of his life in the sixties. The book maintains a radical energy to "run like a racehorse whose rider is a mystic." It begins in a serene setting, a campfire on the shores of the Slocan River in the Kootenay Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Across the river before him loafs a herd of dairy cattle. Behind him, forty acres of marijuana sway in the breeze. He contemplates his life up to this point. He recalls earlier memories, of a spiritual period of his life, when a mystical experience led him to become one of the Jesus freaks of the 1960's. However, he quickly rejects organized religion. He joins the counter culture college experience, where he founds a nonprofit organization, opens a coffee house, launches a cultural arts center and runs an underground newspaper. He subsequently produces and stars in his own television show. He then started a candle company with two lifelong friends. They maintained a client base of head shops along the West Coast. The desire for more money- more often and more quickly-entices him to leave the legitimate business world and raise his own marijuana crop. This endeavor fails miserably but ends with intensified humor. Marty's downward spiral into drugs and alcohol converges with a rage over the student shootings at Kent State. The outcome of his indignation towards the Viet Nam war and government suppression leads to a charge of "Conspiracy to Overthrow the United States Government." So he flees the country, under the threat of a thirty-year sentence to federal prison. He then smuggles overseas thousands of hits of "Orange Sunshine" LSD to European buyers. After this succeeds, his dream is to continue to scale up his drug smuggling in the Middle East. The stories continue to dig deeper holes and become increasingly dangerous, ultimately bringing him face to face with Palestinian drug lords who try to kill him for his mother lode of LSD. He escapes by a supernatural-encounter with the I Am. He returns to his spiritual roots, once again seeking God, the Eternal One, in the mountains of Switzerland. He meets the love of his life, Mindy, in Switzerland. Their love for each other greatly effects his direction in life. He returns to the United States and turns himself in to the authorities. He receives a ten-year sentence but only serves a few months because of his positive effect upon the inmates of the prison. He is promoted to a maximum-security federal hospital as an aide. His would be promotion ends up being an experience likened to the novel by Ken Kesey, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. After his experience in the hospital, he is paroled to California where he is reunited with Mindy. They were married while he was still on parole. Through the years, they have shared new adventures and experiences in more than fifty nations of the world. Now, Marty wishes to use his life story to inspire hope and encouragement in those experiencing difficult times, that life can turn around, come together, -and they too can Break on Through to Other Side.

Each essay in this volume sheds light on an important aspect of the decade&—actually a decade and half&—known as the Sixties. The Sixties are famous for the diverse social movements that threatened the essence of American public policy and mainstream society and changed those very entities in fundamental ways. These essays juxtapose the dramatic narratives of social movements, including civil rights, women's liberation, and antiwar protest, and the Cold War liberalism that spawned them. The contributors are two political scientists, several historians influenced by the social sciences, and the senior staff attorney for the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund. Contributors are Brian Balogh, Hugh He&člo, Martha Derthick, Daryl Michael Scott, W. J. Rorabaugh, Martha F. Davis, and Louis Galambos.
