The complementary systems of Nyaya and Vaisesika constitute one of the oldest and most important traditions within Indian philosophy. This volume offers a systematic and detailed exposition of the two schools from their beginning to the time of Gangesa (A.D. 150-1350). An extensive interpretive essay introduces summaries of most of the known works written within the tradition. The result is both an excellent introduction for students and an indispensable guide to the thought and literature of early Nyaya-Vaisesika. Originally published in 1978. When Leo XII promulgated Aeterni Patris in 1879, he stipulated that the "Leonine," or official, edition of the Summa should always be printed in conjunction with Cajetan's Commentary. For five hundred years they were studied together. Generations were trained by reading through the Summa article by article with Cajetan's commentaries in hand. Early printed editions of the Summa typically included them in a Talmudic arrangement, as marginal text running around each article by Aquinas. This edition imitates that example. Recently, serious thinkers of all denominations ? and none ? have found new reasons to be interested in St. Thomas. His text is deceptively simple, yet important issues are handled in every article, sometimes below the surface. Cajetan extracts these hidden issues, and explains and elaborates on them with remarkable affinity to modern analytical philosophy. Part of that affinity lies in the use of modal logic, a tool whose importance was overlooked between the Renaissance and the twentieth century. The time is ripe for an analytically-inspired translation of Thomas: hence this volume. Never until now has Cajetan's Commentary been put into English in its entirety. William Marshner's translation is consistent with fidelity to the technical force of the original. The translator's footnotes acknowledge what empirical science has made obsolete in the work of St. Thomas, and also make clear how much today's science would have saved Thomas useless labor. This volume will, for the first time, make Cajetan's help available to the modern reader.

Baruch Spinoza's "Ethics" is a pivotal work in Western philosophy, blending rigorous analytical rigor with a deep metaphysical exploration of reality. Fueled by a radical departure from Cartesian dualism, Spinoza introduces a geometrical method that elucidates complex ideas through clear axioms and propositions. The content delves into the nature of God, the universe, and human emotion, asserting that everything stems from a single substance—God or nature—and marks a foundational moment in rationalist thought by intertwining ethics with epistemology and metaphysics. Spinoza, a 17th-century Dutch philosopher, faced immense challenges due to his radical ideas, often deemed heretical. Growing up in a Jewish community that excommunicated him for his views, Spinoza's background in rabbinical scholarship and his deep engagement with the works of Descartes and Hobbes shaped his philosophical inquiries. His perseverance in articulating a rational outlook on spirituality and ethics reflects his commitment to a coherent and unified understanding of existence, which was profoundly countercultural for his time. "Ethics" is an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the interrelation of reason, emotion, and virtue. It poses striking questions about the nature of freedom, the essence of good, and the role of human beings in the cosmos. Spinoza's work will invigorate your philosophical journey, offering insights that resonate with contemporary existential and ethical debates.
