The period just before the Civil War was a time of dark division that challenged the essence of our American Democracy, much like our divided country of today. In New England during the antebellum period also known as the plantation era before the Civil War, Josh and Emily, two young white abolitionists, attend a meeting where they are introduced to four young blacks, two of whom were escaped slaves. The six unite and come together as friends, all with a similar intent, to help raise the consciousness of the slaves down south. Together, in deeply divided times, they hatch a plan to create a phony plantation on Hurricane Island in the Vicksburg, Mississippi area shortly before the Civil War. Nate, a very fine young chef who cooked many years for his slave master in the years before his escape, offers to teach the culinary arts to southern slaves, as a vehicle for consciousness raising. Jackson teaches slaves to view the bible as a revolutionary document. The four black slaves live under a constant cover up of their real life mission, as they imitate being the slave of their two white friends Emily and Josh. It is not easy. The group works under constant threat of dealing with slave hunters and being unmasked. Joan and Wilma, free blacks, pretend to work as slaves, to carry out their heartfelt mission instilling awareness in the southern slaves at all odds. As a function of working together in close quarters, romance and passion develop within the group. Josh, a firm abolitionist, joins the Confederate army as a union spy in his plan to help the slaves revolt. The plot carries through the siege of Vicksburg and the end of the Civil War. The group's teamwork and support for each other prevail through many life challenges and intrigues. This book gives a solid framework to view the events in today's America.

Erik Root's book, Sons of the Fathers explores the Virginia Slavery Debate of 1831D1832, conducted in the House of Delegates. This is possibly the greatest debate to have occurred in any southern state before the Civil War. The speeches in this book provide, for the first time ever, an unedited version of that debate where many of the sons of America's Founders deliberated over the necessity of emancipating the slaves in Old Dominion. In August 1831, Nat Turner led the most successful slave rebellion in America's history, killing some 60 men, women, and children. This insurrection provided the historical backdrop to the proposal for a gradual emancipation plan. The forces for emancipation, led by Thomas Jefferson's grandson, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, were defeated in the course of the debate as the members of the House of Delegates rejected that it was a necessity to free the slaves. As a result, rift between what is now Virginia and Western Virginia developed, never to heal. Some in the debates believed slaves had the same rights as every human being. Those who balked at emancipation diminished slavery as an 'evil' and came closer to the view that the slaves were mere property. They affirmed that the slave was property and rejected the natural rights grounding of the Founding. In this collection of primary source material-which consists of the speeches made public to the press and the people-the reader will be able to decide just how close the emancipation forces attached themselves to the 'laws of Nature and Nature's God.' The reader will also be able to decipher how far many Virginians departed from not only the Declaration of Independence, but the Virginia Declaration of Rights.

The more I stay in the UK the more I realise that our people from America and Caribbean have very little knowledge of Africa. To my greatest surprise some of them think that Africa is a small country. I came to the UK before the slave trade became a common topic. It is quite clear from my observation that the history of the slave trade is wrongly taught in overseas as far as it concerns Africa. Worse still some of our people here think that the whole of Africa was involved in the slave trade. This book is to put forward the authentic history of the slave trade. Moreover this book will show clearly the areas affected by the slave trade. The aim of the writer of this book is to make the history of the slave trade clear and simple to read. The idea is to make the book affordable and available as much as possible in order to study the history in Africa and overseas. If the history of the slave trade is taught and studied carefully any such mistakes will be avoided in future.
