Excerpt from The Small Grains In the preparation of this volume the author has kept in mind the manifest need of giving more attention to the fundamental facts underlying agronomy, in the present-day training of students in agriculture. Such need has been felt directly by the author in his organization of young men for agronomic and pathologic research. It is the occasional student who finds himself prepared by sufficient training in those applied sciences related to the study of field crops to meet the awaiting problems of investigation. As the stream cannot rise higher than its source, so the agriculture of the future cannot be greatly improved unless the leaders themselves are placed on a firmer scientific footing. From the above, it will be correctly inferred that this book is intended primarily for instruction in colleges and universities. It will be a disappointment, however, if it shall not be found adapted for use in agricultural short-courses, academies, and high schools, and by many farmers and general readers. The manner of presenting some of the subjects is very different from that usually followed, but the changes are considered well justified, and it is hoped will commend themselves. Excerpt from Harvesting Small Grains and Utilization of the Straw The introduction of the small canhine in the early 30's was mainly responsible for the use of combines in the Corn Belt, the North east, and the more humid southern areas where small-grain acreages per farm are usually limited. Soybeans for grain are usually harvested with the combine and with the marked expansion of acreage in the war years, many farmers in the Corn Belt bought combines primarily for soybeans and these combines were available for the small grain harvest. Excerpt from Yellow Dwarf: A Problem Disease of Small Grains A virus-caused yellow dwarf type of disease that attacks small grain and other grass plants has been rolling up evidence that it is a costly cr0p destroyer, and a hard one to fight. In United States farming areas, the virus-spread by aphids-has been outstandingly destructive to oats, secondarily to barley. Wheat, rye, and many pasture and range grasses can be infected. Only in recent years has research been able to make solid progress toward understanding and combating this yellow dwarf disease. For oat growers and many other farmers, some of the new-found information is important for knowing what the disease is like and what protective measures are available or in prospect. Excerpt from The Insect Enemies of Small Grains Although corn is king in Nebraska, our crops of small grains are not insignificant. The insect enemies of wheat, oats, barley, and rye therefore demand our attention nearly or quite as much as do those which attack corn. Accordingly, during the past year much time has been given to the study of this class of insect pests. While many of the species are identical for the different crops, the nature of the plants themselves being unlike, it necessarily follows that the mode of attack among these ene mies must vary somewhat in each case. This being true, some pains has been taken to treat of them according to their host plants. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Further, many of the 1950 grain binders were more than 20 years old as but few binders have been bought in recent years. Many of the binders on farms were not used in 1950. Excerpt from Experiments in Field Plot Technic for the Preliminary Determination of Comparative Yields in the Small Grains During recent years the investigation of the reliability of field experiments has become an important phase of agronomic research. Field experiments as ordinarily conducted have been shown to be affected by many gross errors. In the light of these investigations it has become apparent that the results of many of the older experiments are inconclusive or even misleading. Various expedients have been suggested for counteracting experimental error. Some Of these have been quite successful, while others have probably done more harm than good. The pioneer investigations in this field have been of great value in directing attention to the important sources of error and in suggesting possible means for their control. Doubtless at the present time most of the major sources of error are recognized. But the true extent of the errors and the actual practical value Of the methods of counteracting them can be determined only by numerous investiga tions of experimental methods under different conditions.
