Excerpt from The Small House Its Architecture and Surroundings The result of this difficulty has been twofold. On one side it has Spread an unwholesome view of what domestic architecture means; and on the other side it has produced apathy, and eventually ignorance, on the whole subject. Under the first heading some of the worst offenders are those with distinctly artistic proclivities, for their intense aestheticism is quite beside the point when dealing with domestic architecture. They would like to crowd their homes with cosy corners and wavy lines. But then, proving themselves to be still artists, they find that ordinary furniture is impossible, and content themselves with a bench, a few stiff chairs, and a cottage table. But healthy design should invite - nay, be incomplete without - all sorts of beautiful ornaments and the most refined furniture. Our rooms must not them selves set a limit to our aesthetic dreams, but form a permanent and restful base from whence we can sally forth in mind into the mysteries of science, art, and literature. There must be no jarring note, but breadth of conception; for no mannerism, no artistic simplicity in our surroundings, no staying at home in mind or in body, can ever take the place of wider interests in life. Art is not life, but one of the best aids to living well. On the other side there is the man of a strong business disposition, who wants a house and comfort. Excerpt from The Small House Its Architecture and Surroundings In writing the following pages, every endeavour has been made to adhere to two conditions. First, that the book was to be for those who wished to build for themselves; not for their architects, nor for speculators. In fact, it was to be a guide for the client to the line of thought generally adopted by the architectural profession on the subject of building a home. Secondly, that only a single class of house was to be discussed - namely, one designed for gentlefolk and their servants, but not costing more than about £1000. It has ever been the case since the architect became a professional man, and ceased to employ his own masons, that one of his chief difficulties has been to impart to his client a proper understanding of the building he proposes to erect. Plans and elevations give a diagram of the dry bones; a perspective view may give the general outline, but neither of these will carry any conviction to the lay mind without some vision of life as it will be in the completed building, or unless each drawing and architectural conversation carries with it the scent of real bricks and mortar. Excerpt from Small Country Houses of to-Day In this imaginary house the foundations are assumed to be normal in quantity and cost, but if the ground be treacherous and need specially deep or solid foundations, what then An extra cost of over two hundred pounds may easily be incurred without the addition of a Single extra cubic foot of useful space in the house. This would bring the cubic - foot price from Sixpence up to sevenpence, and there would be nothing to Show for the extra expenditure. Then, again, local conditions of building vary greatly. If a house is three miles from a station, instead of near by, every ton of brick and timber carted will cost about half-a crown more. Some districts are rich in materials, as, for example, Peterborough, where bricks cost little more than half their price delivered in London. Moreover, wages vary markedly, and those ruling in Greater London are on a higher scale than in the country. All these conflicting factors tend to vitiate the accuracy of comparison between the cubic-foot price of one house and another, even where the materials used in each are of the same intrinsic value, and no comparison is reasonable at all when one is built, say, of stone, with oak-panelled rooms, and the other of brick, with walls plainly plastered. SO much for the danger of laying too great stress on such a rough-and - ready method of calculating costs: Its real value is in the proof it gives that houses can be built in solid fashion and with definite artistic quality at such low costs as Sixpence or sevenpence a cubic foot. When that is made clear there disappears much of the objection to embarking on building a house that will suit its owner's tastes and habits to a nicety. Excerpt from The Small House for a Moderate Income N the publishing of this book, which deals exclusively with the Small house in its various phases, it is my intention to promote the building of the attractive house, in keeping with our present day mode of living. It is most encouraging to find that in recent years greater attention is being given to the building of small houses than ever before. The rapid development of suburban tracts of land in almost every part of the country has created a wide spread demand for good houses of intelligent design, planned with an idea of comfort and convenience as well as artistic merit. In designing the houses which are illustrated and described, I have kept these points well in mind, also that most important factor expense. Excerpt from Small Country Houses of to-Day, Vol. 2 My present subjects are grouped with reference to the traditions which inspired them. The simpler vernacular work comes first, and the changefulness of modern eclecticism is seen through various types and roughly in the historical sequence of their anti-types until the presentation of the later classical tradition is reached. It is the manner of some books on domestic architecture to discuss qualities of design and to illustrate them by buildings which yield apt examples of the writer's theses. I have taken a house rather than an abstract quality as the basis of each chapter, and let its main characteristic suggest a line of thought. The method is discursive, even disjointed, but at least it has the advantage that the reader may skip a chapter without breaking the thread of any argument. Excerpt from Houses and Gardens It might be supposed at least that all this ugly building would be attended with some compensation of a practical kind, and that the modern villa would at least possess utilitarian qualifications. But here again one finds that so far from being in any way adapted to the real requirements of its occupants, it is designed in accordance with a tradition which is based on the life and habits of the occupants of a mansion. The best part of its limited space is set apart to impress the neighbours, and the family is confined in some plastered rectangular cell which is already crowded with unnecessary and pretentious furniture. But enough has been said, perhaps, to show that there is an urgent need for reform in the plan Of the average modern house, and, apart from artistic considerations, it is at least desirable that it should be rationally designed. It has Often been urged that a house should express and conform to the special needs of those for whom it is built. But while this is certainly desirable it may be questioned whether houses of special type should be extensively built. A house has to meet the requirements Of many occupants, and it seems reasonable that one should bear in mind in its construction as to how far it is adapted for general demands. In the design Of houses for various clients of moderate means, I have been led to conclude that it is possible to deduce a normal plan which meets the requirements of the average family, and that variants from this constant type of plan are to be found rather in appendages to the plan than in any essential modification of its central features. Instead of a conception Of the house which presupposes the collocation of a number of compartments which in the smaller houses become each too small for comfort, it is suggested that the house rationally planned should primarily consist of at least one good-sized apartment, which, containing no furniture but that which is really required, leaves an ample floor space at the disposal Of Its occupants. Excerpt from The Home of Beauty: A Collection of Architectural Designs for Small Houses Submitted in Competition by Architects and Architectural Draftsmen and Selected From Four Hundred for Their Merit; 1920 It is for this reason that we have brought these plans together in The Home of Beauty which we are now presenting to you. You doubtless have often been offended, in going about from place to place, by the uniformly dull and unattractive appearance of small or moderate-sized houses.
