VICKSBURG?ANOTHER CASE OF BEATING U. S.?A RUNAWAY HORSE CARRIES ME INTO CLOSE QUARTERS?JACKSON AND CANTON?-HAVE TROUBLE WITH UNCLE TOMMY AND LEAVE THE REGIMENT. In May we were transported in boats down to Vicksburg and up the Yazoo river to Hains' Bluff. There we went into camp to help watch Johnson who was waiting for a chance to raise the siege. We had something to do there; raiding, and scouting parties out every day. Once we crossed the Yazoo, and made a raid into the Running Water country. We captured a large herd of cattle and some prisoners and horses. I captured a fine young mare. An officer of the yth Kansas cavalry offered to give me $60 if I would bring the mare to his camp without letting her get branded. When the quartermaster once got his U. S. brand on a horse's shoulder, no one would buy. When we got to the river on our return, the brigade quartermaster was there to take charge of all the captured property. He stood on the steam ferry-boat as the horses were loaded for crossing, and permitted no horse to go on board without the U. S. brand. I took in the situation while another regiment was being ferried. Then I chewed the end of a stick into a brush, got some tar from the hub of an old-fashioned wagon, and made U. S. with tar on my captured horse; worked the tar well into the hair, then rubbed it off with sanduntil I had a fine brand. I had to tell my captain what I was up to, as each captain was required to stand at the gang-plank to assist the quartermaster as his company went on board. I took my horse on first, and then went back and brought up the rear with my captured mare. The captain managed to move away as I led the mare up the plank, and the U. S. was so plain that no questions were asked. When our regiment was alone or at the he...

Almost more remarkable than having survived the horrors of the Confederate prison at Andersonville is the fact that Melvin Grigsby could 33 years later pen this often hilarious recounting of his experiences in the American Civil War. He does not shy away from descriptions of life as it was in Andersonville. In fact, this is one of the best accounts of life in Rebel confinement. Over 13,000 of the 45,000 Union POWs died in the squalor of the camp. But Grigsby's education and intelligence made him one of the keenest observers at a very young age. Only 16 when he entered the Union army, he was only 20 upon his final escape to freedom and the end of the war. His curiosity often led him to read plantation overseer logs when his regiment came across them: "If anyone believes that the cruelties practised on the slaves were exaggerated in 'Uncle Tom's Cabin, ' let him hunt up and read one of those plantation records." In Andersonville, they were all "smoked yanks: " ..".picture one of these half-naked, bony, filthy, gaunt and ghastly skeletons, his eyes sunken, his cheek bones protruding, his gums all swollen, his elbows and knees swollen, and black and blue, and his feet two great shapeless masses of bloated flesh, and picture him sitting on the ground, as he usually was, with his chin between his knees, and his hands clasped around them, and you have a specimen of "Smoked Yank," thousands of whom could always be seen at a glance." Helped over and over during his escapes by African-Americans who risked their own lives, he wrote 33 years later: "Should they ever become thoroughly aroused and united in a movement to throw off the white man's yoke, that still oppresses and galls them, I believe that the fortitude, endurance and heroism they will display will surprise the world."

Cahaba Prison And The Sultana Disaster written by William O. Bryant and has been published by University Alabama Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with History categories.

Tells the dramatic story of the infamous Confederate prisoner-of-war camp where 5,000 Union soldiers were interned during the latter part of the Civil War and of the ensuing maritime disaster With a death rate of 5 percent, Alabama's Cahaba Federal Prison boasted a better survival rate than the notorious Confederate prisoner-of-war camps of Andersonville, Libby Prison, Elmira, Rock Island, Johnson's Island, and Camp Douglas. Yet it was a ghastly facility, a hastily converted agricultural warehouse so overcrowded that each man barely had space to lie down to sleep. At the war's conclusion in 1865, however, in a harrowing reversal of the inmates' fates, captured Union soldiers were sent on a grueling overland march to the Mississippi River. Held there in camps at Vicksburg along with other prisoners of war, the soldiers embarked on the steamship Sultana for transportation north. Traveling first to New Orleans and then heading north, the vessel held by some estimates six times more passengers than its safe limit, many of them ill, injured, or malnourished. The flow of the swollen Mississippi that April was wide, swift, and cold, and the Sultana struggled to make the journey. Then, on April 27, 1865, seven miles north of Memphis, a series of three boilers exploded within seconds of one another. The lucky passengers were flung into the water as chunks of the Sultana blasted apart. The remaining wooden structure caught fire and the upper deck collapsed. Only an estimated one third of the passengers survived, hundreds of whom later died from their wounds. First published in 1988, Bryant's account weaves together the many strands of the Cahaba story. Combining masterful storytelling and insightful analysis, he describes Civil War prisons, the history of the Cahaba Federal Prison and its construction, as well as the prison's commanders, prisoners, and local women who provided medical care and food to the prisoners. He tells of the violent struggles among Union inmates, a mutiny and flood that occurred during the final days of the camp, and the harrowing deaths of the liberated soldiers aboard the Sultana. Bryant's Cahaba Prison and the Sultana Disaster remains a vital part of any library of Civil War history.

The Federal Writers? Project, part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration of the 1930s, collected interviews from over 3500 ex-slaves throughout the United States, including 365 former South Carolina slaves. These narratives are an invaluable resource to those interested in resistance by the last generation of South Carolinians held in bondage. This thesis tells us about the separate worlds inhabited by the Palmetto State's slaves and their owners, and describes, often in the slaves? own words, the resistance precipitated by the friction between these worlds.
