Women have always made up the majority of older people: this examination of the lives of elderly women in Britain in the period 1500 to the present reveals attitudes towards the ageing process. It sheds light on household structures as well as wider issues - including the history of the family, the process of industrialisation, the poor law, and welfare provision - and questions many common beliefs about elderly women, particularly that female old age was a time of poverty and want. An important book for students of history and sociology alike.

Though portraits of old women mediate cultural preoccupations just as effectively as those of younger women, the scant published research on images of older women belies their significance within early modern Italy. This study examines the remarkable flowering, largely overlooked in portraiture scholarship to date, of portraits of old women in Northern Italy and especially Bologna during the second half of the sixteenth century, when, as a result of religious reform, the lives of women and the family came under increasing scrutiny. Old Women and Art in the Early Modern Italian Domestic Interior draws on a wide range of primary visual sources, including portraits, religious images, architectural views, prints and drawings, as well as extant palazzi and case, furnishings, and domestic objects created by the leading artists in Bologna, including Lavinia Fontana, Bartolomeo Passerotti, Denys Calvaert, and the Carracci. The study also draws on an array of historical sources - including sixteenth-century theories of portraiture, prescriptive writings on women and the family, philosophical and practical treatises on the home economy, sumptuary legislation, books of secrets, prescriptive writings on old age, and household inventories - to provide new historical perspectives on the domestic life of the propertied classes in Bologna during the period. Author Erin Campbell contends that these images of unidentified women are not only crucial to our understanding of the cultural operations of art within the early modern world, but also, by working from the margins to revise the center, provide an opportunity to present new conceptual frameworks and question our assumptions about old age, portraiture, and the domestic interior.

Industrialised countries worldwide have for years been confronting the prospect of a steadily ageing population. This book, first published in 1997, reflects the breadth of research into gerontology and analyses the major themes and issues in the area of ageing and social policy in both an Australian context and from an international comparative perspective. Topics discussed include unemployment, education, and housing for the aged. Added to this is the contemporary influence of multiculturalism and the challenge it poses to policies and programs that must cater for a growing diversity in the ageing population. A special focus is given to the situation of women and Aboriginal Australians and the specific structural disadvantages they face. This book is essential reading for students and policy-makers in sociology, social and public policy, gerontology, and public health.

The twentieth century saw twin developments in Britain: changes in the pattern of employment, producing the institution of retirement; and demographic changes resulting in an ageing population. In the 1980s, these phenomena stimulated interest and concern in political, professional and academic circles. The growing interest in ageing encouraged the development of social gerontology as a new area of intellectual activity in Britain. Originally published in 1983, the chapters in Ageing in Modern Society draw attention to the changed circumstances in which ageing takes place, at the subjective level, at the level of care and provision, and at the level of theory. Some challenge prevailing notions about the characteristics, needs and capacity of older people. Others are about the changing perceptions of policy makers and practitioners. The collection as a whole offers a view of social gerontology and illustrates the integration of theory and practice. Taken together, the contributions reflect the view that the contemporary experience of old age needs to be seen against a background of social change and cultural diversity.

As social welfare benefits are cut back. the widespread belief that gender discrimination has disappeared with women's greater labour force participation means that in an era of privatisation, 'reform' may be more harmful to women than beneficial.
